CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Kevin (Keanu Reeves) uses some reverse psychology to prepare the jury to acquit Alexander (Craig Nelson) of murder.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Supernatural forces hover over the courtroom in this devilish drama adapted from the novel by Andrew Neiderman. Attorney Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) doesn't heed the Bible-based warnings of his mother (Judith Ivey), who views New York City as "the dwelling place of demons." Instead, he leaves Gainesville, Florida, with his wife Mary Ann (Charlize Theron) to put his legalistic skills to the test at a leading Manhattan law firm run by John Milton (Al Pacino). It all goes smoothly -- with Milton urging them to stay, putting Kevin on a $400-per-hour salary, and moving the couple into a luxurious apartment in his own building on Fifth Avenue -- where Mary Ann falls under the influence of neighbor Jackie (Tamara Tunie). After Kevin defends a weird animal sacrificer (Delroy Lindo, uncredited), he moves up to an important case with an apparent murderer, real-estate tycoon Alexander Cullen (Craig T. Nelson). Ignored by Kevin, the troubled Mary Ann has some disturbing experiences, verging on the occult, while Kevin, at work, becomes attracted to redhead Christabella (Connie Neilsen). Dazzled by his entrance into paradise, Kevin doesn't grasp who handed him this Big-Apple success. Could it be...Satan? The film features demonic creatures by Rick Baker. Cameos (Senator Alfonse D'Amato, Don King, others) add to the ambiance of ambition and power in the canyons of Manhattan.

I don't care what anyone says. This was arguably the best performance of Keanu Reeves's career. Something about working alongside Al Pacino just brings out the best in other actors. Just ask Jamie Foxx.

The acting in this movie is superb. Although Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, and Craig T. Nelson get to play characters with a greater extremes of emotions, Keanu Reaves really shines in this, making everything believable and pulling the show all together.

Keanu is a gem. He has a certain method of delivery, probably a unique one at that. Thats why it takes a certain kind of maturity to understand it.

That’s a perfect way of putting it. I have always been confused as to why people hate Keanu’s acting. Seeing this comment I think has helped me articulate it: they hate his delivery. BUT the emotions and genuine feelings of the character comes through. So I enjoy his acting. His energy and passion just feels genuine to me. That’s why I can tolerate the supposed bad accent. It simply doesn’t bother me.

We're also forgetting to point out, in addition to what he just did to make them hate or dislike him. He also did not spend all morning like the DA talking. He made a CHOICE to go before lunch and then wrapped it up in about 90 seconds. The jury will think of that as several things, a guy who valued their time and hunger. He also made his point quickly and maybe just as important as to how fast he went, this shows that the defense does not have much to hide. In fact he laid out reasons to dislike the man, but as he says...that does not equal murder. Just a brilliant tactic psychologically.

Keanu's best performance. I don't know why people rag on it so much. I saw this movie LONG after I had seen many other iconic Keanu Reeves films, where he often played a wooden board. When I saw this movie, I was stunned that it was the same actor. Like, Keanu was legit amazing in this. Really showed some range and energy he rarely shows. I don't care what anyone says, I was entertained by his work here. His southern drawl is not even that heavy (people seem to criticize it, but honestly, he doesn't do an over-the-top foghorn-leghorn parody like Daniel Craig does in _Knives Out_ ), it's relatively underplayed and easy on the ears, feels believable and the dialect doesn't constrain him. He shows some great emotional range here and holds up VERY well against the powerhouse that is Al Pacino. I wish Keanu would do more of this work.
@rafaellima83
@rafaellima83 2 жыл бұрын
That was the movie where I first noticed everytime he needs to show some deep emotion, he looks away from the camera and tries to hide his face. After I noticed it here, it was impossible to not notice it in every damn movie he acts up until recent years. He stopped doing that some years ago and embraced the "I cant show emotions" method of acting. In the other hand his line delivery was always bad but I feel it got way worse within the years. I don't remember him delivering his lines so lifelessly in the first three Matrix movies as he did in the most recent one. (ANd don't get me wrong, it was *bad* in the first movies)

I saw this movie when it first came out. In this movie, they never answered whom killed Alexander Cullen's family. There was an underage stepdaughter, and she was still alive by the end of the movie. Cullen's wife told her friends that she could prove that Alex was having an affair, but the affair partner was never named. It was assumed, for a while, that it was Alex's secretary Melissa, but that was proven inaccurate by the end of the movie. I believe that it was the underage stepdaughter with whom Alex was having an affair. Alex was very distraught that CPS wouldn't allow him to speak or visit with her during the trial, but was all smiles when Alex was allowed to see the stepdaughter after Kevin got him acquitted for the murders. Just a thought.

I have the same thought, and I think you are correct. In the funeral scene, Cullen is sitting besides the girl, and he is touching her back. In that moment, Kevin sees Getty's face (the pedo teacher) from the 1st scene, giving the idea that Cullen is the same as the teacher; both are attracted to underage girls, and this scene presents a foreshadowing of the Getty's crime. Also, it reminds us that Kevin is very observant, his best quality as a lawyer. So, his weird look to Cullen hints why he killed the wife, stepson and maid. All of these people lived with them. Also, Kevin knew that Melissa, the secretary, was not sleeping Cullen.

Justice? Choen was the indeed the killer. Melissa was lying, and Kevin finds out when he suddenly asks her if he's circumcised. So he's doing what he's doing, saving a murdered from jail, and knowing he was the murderer. He sold his soul, that's why the Devil then makes his move to grab it.

I don’t recall the movie that well, but in the real world couldn’t the defendant still be brought up on murder charges if he paid someone to do the murders? Like I said, I don’t recall the movie but he could be a horrible person, not at the scene of the murder at the time of the murder (so - not actually committing the murder) but paying someone else to do it which in essence is like doing the murder himself.
@Kontorotsui

It discredits her because of how far she was gonna go to get the teacher. The teacher did do those things to her, Kevin knew that, but his need to win went over his better judgement. However she also got two people, the teacher didn't go after, to lie so that she wasn't the only victim. Basic logic, if you got two people to lie for you, then unless evidence says otherwise, you are pretty much a liar yourself. Keanu's character was the pioneer of slut shaming lawyers.

To any lawyers, I've always been curious: Would this be a useful strategy in a real-life case?

Who is Mr Blank you should always respect the intelligence of the jurors. If something is obvious, there is no sense in trying to hide it. Just embrace it. If you can, of course.

@@lilredd3232 he wasn't angry at the defendant either. He just had to sternly explain his strategy to him, if anything it was a minor frustration.

@zackhanscom You do realize that this whole movie is about the Devil right? Any legal logical reasoning is thrown out the window when the Devil's at play.

cafiero, beyjamilla - do the words "acting" or "script" mean anything to you? Let me rephrase; do you know what those words mean? Do you understand the concept of film..? The dialogue and and actions of the characters in movies are meant to portray a story. These are actors playing a role. These events never took place in real life. This. Is. A. Movie.
