CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) gives his 65th birthday speech and breaks precedent by telling the crowd his one candle wish.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The cycle of life on Earth hangs in the balance when Death becomes emotionally involved in this romantic fantasy. William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) is a tremendously wealthy and powerful man who oversees a worldwide multi-media empire. Despite the loss of his wife, whom he dearly loved, William is content with his life, and he's very close to his two daughters, Allison (Marcia Gay Harden) and Susan (Claire Forlaini). One night, as William is fighting a hostile takeover of his company and Allison is planning an elaborate party to celebrate her dad's 65th birthday, William begins displaying the symptoms of a severe heart attack, and he is visited by a mysterious stranger, Joe Black (Brad Pitt). Joe is actually the angel of death, who has taken the form of a man who recently passed on to pay William a call. It seems that William is due to move on to the next world, but (no great surprise) he doesn't want to go. Joe, on the other hand, is curious to know what life is like for mere mortals, so the two men strike a deal -- William will have some time to get his affairs in order, and Joe will wait and see what it's like to be a human being. Joe decides that he likes it very much when he falls in love with Susan, but negotiating the slippery slopes of romance is no easier for Joe than for any ordinary man. Meet Joe Black is an updated version of Alberto Casella's play Death Takes a Holiday, which was adapted for the screen in 1934.

Few actors would have the guts to take such a long pause before the final line, but what a great build up he gives it with his contemplative, melancholic look and lowering of the voice when he finally does say, "65 years. Don't they go by in a blink?" What an excellent actor.

If it seems to go in a blink that means you are always rush rush never stopping to take time to truly appreciate and reflect. 36 years I am and it seems to go buy so slow when you see the constant cycle.

And to think, this whole thing was improvised. Anthony Hopkins is one of the greatest actors out there in my opinion, he improvises in every movie he does, and you can't even tell.

I’m sorry for what you’re going through. It’s normal to be afraid, we all are too. But death is a part of us from the moment we are born, don’t be afraid, enjoy your days and welcome her with open arms when the time comes. Who knows what your next adventure will hold or whose life you’ll change. Sending you a big hug & hope that you are still in the fight! ♥️🙏🏻

"65 years. Don't they go by in a blink." Uhg. A great example of how less is often more, in writing. No need to for a long speech or over the top telegraphing of what Hopkins' character is feeling and thinking. One line with a faraway look sums it all up. A really terrific movie. Reminds me of a great meme I once saw, of a guy sitting on a very narrow ledge of a cliff a couple of thousand feet up...."Death whispers in my ear...live now, for I am coming."

Meet Joe Black (1998) moves at its own pace being (perhaps) overly long but I have never minded that one bit. Here we have Bill's birthday speech which is cinematically splendid. Then, among other moments, there is the precisely-clipped berating of Drew by Joe in Bill's home office. Especially as I'm within shouting distance, now, of Bill's age (as ably portrayed by Anthony Hopkins) the themes of Meet Joe Black sound as a clarion call from yet a bit of a distance.

Hello ! Excuse me but do you have 65 ? Lol. Probably some of the speech is appliable to a wedding night but ... Another part of it you definitely need to transform ! I would keep the first part maybe, but if you are marrying maybe it is because you want something more ? Like taking care for each other showing that you really care in the small and big things, creating a new life together ... ? Don't you have plans ? I mean do you want to marry because you are dying or because you want to live a long life together with your bride ?? I wish you a good life. Enjoy your time together.

@Galandriel89 I know its a completely different movie but the end of Act of Valor is just as powerful as this and has the same message. In a letter, one navy seal quotes a poem written by the Indian chief Tecumseh "When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home." Perfect.

When your are on your deathbed and you see the angel of death only then will you realise that everything that you have done, all the money and the glanour you gained, all the fame, all the sleepless nights, all the tasty food, all the beautiful women and men you looked at, all your relationships, all your children will be of no use. In that moment the only thing that will count is your deeds. As you despair and agonise for another breath. crying and desperately hoping for another year, another month, another week another day another hour, another minute, another second. NO! Your time is up, you have done what you have done and achieved whatever you have achieved. Now judgement begins.
