If he always had to tell things exactly how they were, he would have been forced to say "I did this, I beat myself up." Instead he gave a bunch of facts, all true, without giving up that key piece of information. This proves that he was able to manipulate the curse in his favor without having to be completely honest. So, I think "I'd rather not say" would still have worked.
