CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Frank (Al Pacino) teaches the beautiful and charming Donna (Gabrielle Anwar) how to dance the tango.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Driven by an extravagant, tour-de-force performance by Al Pacino, Scent of a Woman is the story of Frank Slade (Pacino), a blind, retired army colonel who hires Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell), a poor college student on the verge of expulsion, to take care of him over Thanksgiving weekend. At the beginning of the weekend, Frank takes Charlie to New York, where he reveals to the student that he intends to visit his family, have a few terrific meals, sleep with a beautiful woman and, finally, commit suicide. The film follows the mis-matched pair over the course of the weekend, as they learn about life through their series of adventures. Though the story is a little contrived and predictable, it pulls all the right strings, thanks to O'Donnell's sympathetic supporting role and Pacino's powerful lead performance, for which he won his first Academy Award. Scent of a Woman is based on the 1975 Italian film Profumo Di Donna.

Cast: Chris O'Donnell, Al Pacino, Gabrielle Anwar

I used to play violin and was a teenager when I first saw this movie, and this scene in particular. It did smth with me and I went straight to my violin professor and said that I heard the most beautiful tango melody and that I wanted us to play it (he had a little tango orchester that I was also part of). But there was no internet back then and I did not know the name of the piece, just the movie, so my dear prof. Milev rented a VHS, listened to it multiple times and wrote down every single voice of each instrument. And gave me the honour to play the 1st violin. That is now over 25 years, I stopped playing violin and moved to a different country, but I still have those keys that his own hand wrote down. And I will keep and treasure them for as long as I live.

Gabrielle Anwar explained that she went through "a yearlong audition process that ultimately resulted in two days of work and became just seven minutes of the film". But what an absolutely magical seven minutes. She captured the shyness, nervousness, growing confidence, excitement, chemistry and fun perfectly. She also never rehearsed with Pacino, by his design. Making it very spontaneous.

Pacino absolutely nailed this role, for some reason he is able to convey so many emotions when he acts; i love everything about this scene, the way he asks her and the way he dances with that look on his face, he actually does look blind. That’s probably what i love about Pacino the most: his characters feel so real, he becomes them, truly one of the greatest actors ever.

This movie is what of the reason Pacino is the Pantheon of artistry. His portrayal of he forgotten soldier who was blind and forgotten and no longer able to live the glory days but taken one last tour of the delicacies of existence while no longer been able to see but able to dance the Tango the way he did, smashed all other contenders for the Oscar. A remarkable performance. I absolutely love this movie.

Yes, Pacino deservedly won an Oscar for this movie, and he's amazing in this scene. Gabrielle Anwar's performance is so underrated here. Her character's innocence is what makes the scene work just as much as Pacino's strength.

For me, what makes this scene so enchanting is its portrayal of something theoretically impossible to be captured by a camera - the vibrant essence of life. Just as many comments have rightly pointed out, Gabrielle's contribution should not be overlooked. Apart from the undeniable vitality displayed by Al Pacino's character, Gabrielle's emergence from waiting and her attempt at tango also embody this vitality. For me, this is one of the most captivating aspects of this work, as it has the power to move any viewer who can appreciate the beauty of life

I don't know about that. I think you have to watch the right movies. I think the argument could be made that Toy Story, The Lion King, Gladiator, Titanic, Armageddon....that these are all very emotional movies. This idea that things in the past are better gets thrown around a lot. I love when old people say older music was less repetitive and more unique or even less vulgar....It couldn't be farther from the truth. Ever heard the song Wipeout? Ever heard My Big Ten Inch? Grease Lightening? No, older isn't better. It is just older.

I'm watching this again after many, many years and it made me cry tears of joy (which I didn't the first time I saw it). Pacino was fantastic here but Gabrielle Anwar also deserves praise for her performance. You can literally see her heart and soul open up to life and the new experience Pacino's character brought to her. Her smile and her moves start off shy, but with trust, she gains confidence and she breaks into open joy and surrenders herself to the dance and basically -- whatever else life has to give her.

Pacino was far from handsome. My mum met him im person in the 90's. he's 1.70 m and pretty much nondescript. Of course he could sell his Napoleonesque attitude (typical for shorties) very convincing in Hollywood, by playing always the cheeky one who steals the limelight. In real life attitude like this is a straight "ticket" to the hospital, but hey not in the movies. that's why people love to watch them.

“Por una Cabeza” is one of the most well-known “tango” music created in 1935. Carlos Gardel composed the music and Alfredo Le Pera wrote the lyrics. The title “Por una Cabeza” means “with a head (of a horse)” in Spanish. 3:00 It portrays the story of a man who lost everything after betting on a horse race, including the woman he admires. “Por una Cabeza,” i.e., “to lose by a head,” signifies the distance his horse lost in that race. My grandfather was blind, I never knew him but my mother told me that he used to dance tango, and he do it such as great as pacino in the movie When she sees this she remembers her father...

I love the tension in this scene as you wonder how good a dancer he can be if he's blind but it's incredible as you can see not only is his young lady scared to make a fool of herself you can see he's a little scared too. But the longer the dance goes on you really see both of them loosen up and get more of a feel how the dance will go. A Timeless scene if there ever was one.

What makes this scene perfect is they don't try to make him look like a big shot dancer, infant he reminds me of my dad, after a few drinks in some wedding, trying to impress some (much) younger ladies.

L Ferenczi good for your dad! It takes a brave man to ask a woman on to the dance floor. Far more men would rather take up arms than dance.

Tolstoy uses the same concept in War and Peace, with the waltz, where he says with the true lovers that the, the waltz was not in the perfect formal form, or something to that effect, yet something better because of their love.

I love to tango, but no longer have a partner. I could watch this scene every day of my life, and never get tired of it. Al Pacino and Gabrielle Anwar played it to perfection. Dancing is not about perfect technique; it's about perfect bliss...and that's what they achieved. Bravo!

My father recently passed. He reminded me so much of Al Pacino, especially in this film. His mannerisms, character -everything. The uncanny part of it all is that I had a thanksgiving trip to NY 10 years ago with my dad (who hadn’t seen this film) where we stayed at the Waldorf. He even dressed like Col Slade that weekend, and tripped and fell on Park Avenue the same way he did in this film. I’m just so grateful this film exists. It kept my fathers spirit alive. There is something inherently spiritual about this movie. Something greater than just a good script performed by great actors. It’s tied to something cosmic in my mind
