Believe it or not...I saw this movie 35 times...when it first came out in 1983!!! I was working at a McDonalds right next to a movie theater! They gave me the marquee after the last show...yeah, yeah, I know-it sounds pathetic...but this IS an incredible movie!!! (btw...I met Chloris Leachman and her sister one night at that same theater!)

My mom took my Sister and I to see this in the movies and we immediately fell in love. We grew up Streisand fans anyway. But we loved this movie so much we made our mom buy the record of the soundtrack and played and sang it over and over for years. Still love this movie and soundtrack as well!!🙏🏽😍🫶🏼🦋🌹♥️

This is such a memorable film, I loved it. Only saw it on TV but never forgot it her role was remarkable, and the story is so moving.. Her voice is unique, she should of won an Oscar and the story of a Jewish girl playing a boy to become educated, in where only boys were allowed to learn.. I loved it 😊

My parents took me to the premiere at the Cinerama Dome in 1983. I know this entire movie and soundtrack like the back of my hand. It’s perfect.

I remember when I first saw this at the movie theatre with my best friend in high school and I thought, “Yentl still looks like a girl!”, even though she cut her hair and wore eyeglasses. But by the end of this scene I was completely accepting of her as male. I loved the realness of this scene.

Actually I don't think we were ever supposed to exactly accept her completely as male. She's a girl disguised as a boy. It's like Twelfth Night (Shakespeare). Complete with falling in love (with a man). (I'm just saying. 😉)

She is completely female throughout the whole story, which honestly is one of the very very best things about it. The people she's with are supposed to believe she's male. We're not. Be careful that you don't miss the point. The whole movie is actually pretty much a celebration of being female, combined with, a voyage of self-discovery for the main character, and the frustrations of being a woman in that place and in that time. Get the story right. 📖

He put his arm around her as they left the pastry shop, they walked under the same umbrella together, there are many many moments here. And while I know that that's quite obviously *not* the *only* point, anyone who doesn't see that that's half what she's thinking of here, is obviously missing around half the point. (Just saying.)

I felt like this a lot in college, which is what age range I was when I first saw this (on TV). The learning and studying, combined with the friendships, it just really felt a lot like that. I miss those times. Happy memories. ☺️

This I think is Streisand worst work! A director once told me "You can't direct yourself." Maybe some can but Streisand I believe cannot. Thoughout the entire movie she seems very insecure and uncomfortable; from her devotion to her faith to her so called "attraction" to Avigdore. What was she trying to prove anyway? And Mandy Patinkin. As great an actor as I think he is, his character here I find nothing short of a despicable annoyance! I believe that in spite of being in love with a woman, his character is gay. The way he gets close to Streisand's male character all the time; insisting "One night he can share my bed." The scene at the lake where he comes out of the water and shows off his naked body in front of her/him. How he says to her/him, "I'll hold you! Take off your clothes." The scene afterward where he puts his arm around her/him and says "Me sitting next to you. What have you got to worry about?" The fucking man is obviously gay! The only character I think that has any realism, let alone charm is Hadaas. Amy Irving just shines in that. But that's all. This movie I believe is nothing but a worthless piece of garbage! A loss! If this was the first project that inspired the Oscars to boycott Streisand, I'm in total support

The "director" who told you that is probably a very shitty or inexperienced director. Woody Allen directs, produces, writes and plays the leading role in his films. He said in an interview that it gives him full control of the movie's direction. Tarantino does the same, although his acting roles are smaller. Why should Streisand not do the same? Also, how can you think Avigdor is gay? He is head over heels for Hadass, the only reason he has an attraction to Anshel (Yentl) is because she was very feminine in her male role. And of course Yentl is insecure - she has grown up in a society where women are considered inferior to men, and she is breaking the rules here. Defying society and tradition takes guts, something most people don't have.

briansky10 jesus Brian ...what film did you watch? Certainly not Yentl. It was a beautiful masterpiece in every way to me. I loved it as a 16 year old ( cut school with my cousin to go see it - i know the irony), and loved introducing it to my sons who also enjoyed the film. I love the lighting, the delicate nuances, the humor, the charm, the sweet touching moments...i honestly can't understand why you hated it.

It's very simple! The dame acts like she doesn't know what the hell she's doing. Her hesitation, her insecurity, her vagueness, and I dont mean just in her scenes as a man. Throughout the entire film. For someone who's not ashamed of studying the Bible, she may say she's not sorry, but I don't think she's good at showing it. I once wanted to direct myself in a community theater play. But my director, who's very wise and experienced, told me directing yourself is not possible. I didn't fully agree at the time, but after seeing Streisand directing herself in YENTL I totally agree. It's no wonder I think the Oscars boycott her. I'm surprised this film received any nominations at all. I think if Streisand had served only as executive producer like she did in A STAR IS BORN and had a really well known director like Steven Spielberg, Alan Parker, Franco Zeffirelli or Francis Ford Coppolla direct this film, then I think she would of come off much stronger. Maybe even avoided blacklisting by the Oscars. I've always loved Streisand as a singer and I still do. But her as an actress directing at the same time, not all.

+briansky10 ...do you understand how homosexuality works? If Avidgor was gay, he would fall in love with men. But apart from falling in love with Hadass, he also likes Yentl - who isn't a man! She's a woman wearing men's clothes! Her body is still female, and she doesn't even act very "manly" as far as you can say. I once thought I was attracted to a boy, a dancer in an opera I watched, and was surprised because I usually like girls. Turned out it was a girl, she just danced the male part and wore male clothing and I sat too far away to notice right away. And this is exactly what happened to Avigdor! He thought Yentl was a boy, but that's not the point. The point is that she is a girl, and from all the men he could've fallen in love with, he fell for th one who wasn't actually a man. That's the opposite of gay. But even if you don't believe me on that one, 1. bisexuality is a thing, 2. why would it be a problem that he's gay? Why does it make him a less likable character?
