I think it's quite fitting that Ziddler's the one to punch the Duke at the end - maybe because he doesn't really want Christian to die, maybe because he's just tired of bending over backwards to please the man or maybe just because he's thinking "Oh, let them be together!", but whichever his reason, I'm glad he does it!

This scene makes my heart explode with glee (and then comes the scene right after...)! My favorite parts are all of the bohemians and courtesans teaming up to stop Warner (the Duke’s bodyguard) from getting the gun-even Nini Legs-in-the-Air, who blabbed to the Duke about Christian and Satine’s relationship, helps out; Warner awkwardly pretending to be a dancer and musician to get closer; and, of course, Harold Zidler straight-up punching the Duke. Yeah, Zidler is a pretty bad guy (he’s a pimp, keeps secrets from Satine, and essentially sells her by including her name in the Duke’s contract), but in the end, he does the right thing and knocks the Duke flat with a single hit. Amazing!

To keep the magical love something terrible must happen: death. Because on movies or books there can be a lovely ending, but in real life (what happens after the show) there can't be such a good thing as that. So the only way not to break this romance was her to die.

Unpopular opinion, at 1:32 my thoughts were “just walk away, man”. As creepy as the Duke is (what a fantastic performance), in a strange way I still found him somewhat sympathetic. The man fully kept up his end of the bargain and was effectively swindled out of what would be millions of dollars in today’s money just because people shipped his choice of courtesan with Christian over him. He had everything at that moment, including plausible deniability that he had engaged in illegal activity. All he needed to do was walk out and revoke the deed for Moulin Rouge the next day. What does he do instead? Attempt to flat out murder someone in front of hundreds of witnesses. Even a nobleman who did that would probably go to prison for the rest of his life for that. I love this movie, Ewen McGregor was so fantastic, but it made me feel I think a little too much sympathy for the villain.
