This is one of the most brilliant stories ever. Clarice lost her dad when she was young and so she feels drawn to certain father figures, namely Jack Crawford. I think Lector can sense this and tries to fill that role himself, taking her under his wing and helping her solve the case. It just makes him that much more terrifying, the way he can read people and manipulate them.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter: First principles, Clarice: simplicity. Read Marcus Aurelius, "Of each particular thing, ask: What is it in itself? What is its nature?" What does he do, this man you seek? Clarice Starling: He kills women. Dr. Hannibal Lecter: No, that is incidental. What is the first and principal thing he does, what needs does he serve by killing? Clarice Starling: Anger, social acceptance, and, uh, sexual frustration … Dr. Hannibal Lecter: No, he covets. That's his nature. And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet? Make an effort to answer, now. Clarice Starling: No. We just… Dr. Hannibal Lecter: No. We begin by coveting what we see every day. Don't you feel eyes moving over your body, Clarice? You know why those movies are considered classics? While Clarice tells her story later on, in today's movies there would have been a flashback scene, extremely disturbing and action-filled. While here we are tremendously moved by Jodie Foster's phenomenal performance that makes Clarice's memory also ours. Not one use of CGI but spectacular in every way. ALSO, no romantic interaction at all, yet the chemistry is palpable. Although I loved them together, I so appreciate that Jodie didn't return for the sequel, which proves how seriously she takes her job and how she's focused on the artistic side of it. Her Clarice would never fall for Lecter.

The edge in Lecter's voice is not necessarily because he is angry or frustrated with Clarice. It's more like a teacher-student/apprentice relationship. He's spent enough time with Clarice to know that she is smart enough to solve this case and is therefore worth Lecter's time. However, Lecter also knows that time is of the essence. He could have let Clarice chases her tail, but that would mean that all the information and time he's provided her would be worthless. So, he prompts her with more useful insight into Buffalo Bill's psychology. And when she inevitably fumbles while he's grilling her with his questions, he sternly tells her the answers. Lecter desperately wants Clarice to understand and comprehend the information he is giving her so that she can solve this case, so that's why he gets so stern and intense with his mannerisms.

So many nuances in just this one scene, it's absurd. Lighting is very natural, yet it casts quite a dramatic shadow. Especially on Hannibal's face. Then there's camera movement, and editing. Whole thing is shot and paced so beautifully. There's a cage between characters, and at times it seems like Hannibal is the one who's on the outside. And psychologically he is kind of in position of power in the scene.

I always wondered, why does he say: "people will say we're in love". Is it because they know they're in love and everyone around can see it too? Was it a reference to the song? Was it him taunting her because she always wants to talk to him? Ughhh I really just have a strong desire to understand Hannibal.

Whenever I was watching this movie, I was always wondering so much, if he was attracted to her. I read the book and I finally have the answer: Yes, he was ! Hannibal was in love with her, they even married at the end of the book.

Aside from the obvious, Hannibals most notable trait is his pride. He wears it on his sleeve and can't take an insult (as he see's them) without cataloging the insult for later revenge. The only two detectives to get information out of him pandered to this to get him to play ball. Honestly aside from his age and attraction to Starling it's his only weakness.

The whole scene gives feelings of a promising student with a knowledgeable professor - he doesn't give any straight answers, he guides her. Only difference - the professor teaches his student how to find one of his own: a killer with no mercy and empathy. Truly chilling

Anthony Hopkins is so exquisitely devilish in this film that even though his character can be callous when he murders innocents and heartless and gruesome as when he took the police officer's face off, somehow I cannot escape his charm and intelligence. His voice is almost melodious and certainly mesmerizing. To watch these scenes so many years after the debut still can make me giggle with giddiness. He's just so flawless and the lines are a delight. I love a great villain. I just came here because I been haunted lately by the way he utters the word, "Yeah" after Clarice admits to her despicable ruse. I'm going to record it so that I can play it as a sarcastic "yes" to tickle some of the people in my life. Yeah. Thank you, Sir Hopkins.
