CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) gives Champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) his first knock down with one good punch.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. A once-promising pugilist, Rocky is now taking nickel-and-dime bouts and running strongarm errands for local loan sharks to survive. Even his supportive trainer, Mickey (Burgess Meredith), has given up on Rocky. All this changes thanks to Muhammad Ali-like super-boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). With the Bicentennial celebration coming up, Creed must find a "Cinderella" opponent for the big July 4th bout -- some unknown whom Creed can "glorify" for a few minutes before knocking him cold. Rocky Balboa was not the only Cinderella involved here: writer/director Sylvester Stallone, himself a virtual unknown, managed to sell his Rocky script (one of 35 that he'd written over the years) on the proviso that he be given the starring role. Since the film was to be made on a shoestring and marketed on a low-level basis, the risk factor to United Artists was small. For Stallone, this was a make-or-break opportunity -- just like Rocky's million-to-one shot with Apollo Creed. Costing under a million dollars, Rocky managed to register with audiences everywhere, earning back 60 times its cost. The film won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

one of my favorite parts is when they simply announce Rocky's name and the bar cheers and the bartender goes "You did it, man!" it really drives the theme of the movie home. even they thought he "made it" simply by being there. just some "bum" from Philly, but he goes toe-to-toe with Creed and even knocks him down.

@7srchoed
@7srchoed 5 жыл бұрын
naw, doesn't work that way. There's another ref on the outside of the ring called "the counter". His job is to start the count when the knockdown occurs, the ref inside the ring moves the other fighter to a neutral corner and when he turns hi attention to the down fighter, he looks to "the counter" to pick up the count already in progress. You can see it on the screen, the film is very accurate.

I remember it, too. I was a kid. My dad said, "We're going to see a movie about a down-and-out boxer." My younger brother and I groaned. Uggh. NO. But ten minutes into the movie I was mesmerized by the characters. The whole long buildup to the fight is brilliant because Rocky's life seems so sad and grim even though he's a completely lovable person, and the film lulls you into thinking it's a gritty story about a person from the streets and not the setup for a mythic fairytale. Then the training montage scene got us pumped up and rooting for him, but we still didn't really think he had a chance AT ALL, especially when he confesses his fear the night before to Adrian and tells her he just hopes he can still be standing at the end. And then when this scene happened ... OMG ... I was SCREAMING like I was at a real fight. I mean, I lost my mind! I was delirious. And fully grown adults in the audience were pumping their fists at the screen and cheering!! It was one of the most thrilling moviegoing experiences I've EVER experienced in my life, definitely in the top three. Yes, you're right, the word is E-L-E-C-T-R-I-F-Y-I-N-G. To create that fantasy and make it feel real -- the movie fully earned the Oscar for Best Picture in a year of great films.

It's a common thing in sports-movies. There are quite a lot of basketball movies where everything is riding on the last shot. 3 seconds on the clock. The star of the movie dribbles for 20 seconds and make a move like to throw. The camera shifts to the clock - 2 seconds left, He throws the ball - it's flying through the air in slow motion, but at normal speed it would take 3-4 seconds to hit the basket. The ball goes in and the camera shifts to the clock that is just counting down to 0. 3 seconds that were closer to 30.

Rocky is announced as 190 lbs here, I don't think the division existed in 1976, but today he would be a mid-size Cruiserweight, let alone Heavyweight.

this is the reenactment of when Ali was caught with a punch and got dropped. Wepnet vs Ali 1975. Most of the Rocky series is based off his history.

This took me 45 years to pick up on or rather put 2 and 2 together. If you look at the poster above the ring, Rocky is seen wearing red trunks with a white stripe(with yellow and green striped tube sox for some reason). Rocky mentions this discrepancy to Jurgens earlier that morning. In Rocky 2, Apollo wears red trunks with a white stripe.

They should have shown Mickey, the one who knew Rocky's potential all along as the commentator said "this is the first time the champ has ever been knocked down".

It's been 45 years since I sat next to my dad in a movie theater and watched Rocky for the first time, along with the rest of the world. I still remember every moment of it, from the trumpets over the moving word "Rocky" at the film's opening to Rocky's beaten-up face freezing in motion at the end. The movie itself was an unknown contender at the time, and it knocked out everyone who saw it, and still keeps knocking people down while lifting them up at the same time.

I hated it. I can't stand contact sports and I found the love story exceptionally cheesy. Even Burges Meredith, whom I normally would never miss, I found repulsive and unappealing. Everyone was except Adrianne and Buttkis. The MUSIC though, blew me away. VERY inspiring. My brother went and saw this 13 times at the theater. (This came out before VCR's).
