love how the roman soldiers climb up the wall with a shield and then for no apparent reason throw it away. Not to mention the guy tossing his scabbard off to the side as if its an empty magazine from his rifle or something.

Maybe the soldier felt that at this stage of the assault, the shield would not be very useful, versus his 2nd hand free for close combat. Once the Romans reached the defensive wall, throwing stones at them wasn't practical anymore, unless there was others walls with stones ready behind.

@@Matt67012 Even in the process of executing a rout soldiers would NEVER discard their helmets or shields (the exception to this would be soldiers running away and discarding their shields (which in Sparta was considered the height of cowardice (hence the phrase "Come back with your shield or on it (dead)))). It would be like a modern soldier throwing away his helmet and body armor. It is only done in movies to show the star's face and to give the impression of more action.

The Roman officer took his helmet off because it's a movie, and protagonists always do that. The reason that some of them dropped their shields is because this wasn't a proper field battle, it was a skirmish. They stopped fighting in formation the second they got over the wall and the romans held an extreme advantage the second they got over that stone wall.

@noobster4779
@noobster4779 Жыл бұрын
@@wintersun398 Not really, their spear tip was supposed to bend and make it useless though. The soft spear end was supposed to get stuck in a shield and bend itself in the process so removing it from its target would be basically impossible during combat. The spear itself wasnt supposed to break because its much more expensive amking a compleatly new Pilum after the battle then just putting a new metal spear head on it. There was no need for it to break if the enemy cant pull it out in the first place and even if they throw it back...with a bend spearhead it loses basically all armor penetrating capability and would basically just bounce of a roman shield.

It's a fictional depiction. You must be over 40 or a movie geek. Older films were more historically accurate but also lacked the character traits we strive for in our modern stories. You can't just assume Clavius is a badass leader with dialogue and a premise; now it is visually shown with unrealistic emphasis. Some stories avoid this but for anything of Ancient Europe, we need more visual cues, most modern audiences have forgotten the history of these epics.

Just think of the soldier in Saving Private Ryan - his helmet protects him from a head shot. He takes it off in amazement, gets head shot a second later Maybe this officer took it off in frustration- but then we see projectiles going at his face and he has to dodge a few. This movie and several Other movies that Just depict the Stories in the bible are the best Christian movies but whenever IT goes to the modern era especially in America IT gets stupid really fast and WE end Up with stuff Like gods Not dead. I argue that every biblical Story IS an amazing template for a great movie because IT has depth in IT and contrary to some stereotypes None of the biblical Character besides god are perfect beings WHO never struggled even Jesus struggled Not to mention Davids Story WHO began AS a very devoted servant of god but AS a Hero the Fame got to him and He developed Bad traits beginning to lie and murder

So much potential and so much of it wasted. These little details like commander throwing out his helmet in a storm of projectiles, random soldiers throwing off their shields and parts of equipement for no reason, formation breaking on top of the wall for no reason, forming testudo just after they lost like 20% of their men... I mean why? Also these horrible 60s prop shields are just... oh my Gosh. Why? It could've been so much better.

Likely budget, but much like modern militaries, I'd imagine that the Romans adapted their armor kits to the environments as well. Lorica Hamata and Segmentata were costly and time-consuming to produce and Musculara was reserved for the officers. Not to mention hot af and exhausting to wear in a desert climate. Even the Persians/Sassanids didn't bother much with metal armors probably for that reason.

This still has the worst crucifixion scene of any film i've seen. I don't remember who is being crucified (not Jesus! 🙄), but it's done in such a conveyor-belt/run-of-the-mill/'regular day job' kinda way that it was all the more impactful!
@goblin-sightingdnd1037
@goblin-sightingdnd1037 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah; I agree. I really loved the realism of that scene. For the Romans, this would have just been mostly just another execution to get over with; and in a city the size of Jerusalem with all the unrest going on, it stands to reason that they would have had a well-used crucifixion site set up with typical Roman efficiency, which is something I don't think other movies don't seem to remember as they treat it like a huge thing even for the Romans, who, like you said, would have just been going through another execution.

@@goblin-sightingdnd1037 when it comes to Jesus, there were many political reasons why Romans were involved and concerned with the whole thing (Pilot trying to keep control over things and having a huge group blood thirsty to kill Jesus) it might not have been a big deal but the political parts and the unrest with the people they had control over, there would have been tention at the very least for the Roman soldiers involved mostly but mostly with keeping control and keeping the peace, not so much taking everything personal or have it be religious. It was all political.

Historically the majority of Jews would not believe their Messiah had come until a long time later when someone named Simon Bar Kokhba started a revolt that nearly kicked Rome completely out of Judea. Then along came Hadrianus. Otherwise known as Emperor Hadrian. If you ever heard of Hadrian's Wall up in England, he's the guy that built that. He's also the guy that reconquered Judea from Bar Kokhba, killed about 600,000 jews in the process, scattered the remaining jews across the entirety of the empire, made worship of the jewish faith illegal within the empire's borders, and renamed the province SYRIA PALAESTINA. Sorry to be paragraph guy. Just a cool bit of history.
