The dialog in this scene, written by Preston Sturgis, is among most brilliant, tightly scripted and intelligent "clips" of brilliant writing by a true genius that I have ever seen or heard - ever - in my entire life.

Two days had been scheduled to do this, the opening scene. Sturges impulsively dared his cameraman to do the scene in one shot. After three takes, he did. By 11:00 a.m., they had two days shooting taken care of. Source: the Criterion Collection.

That was one continuous take without cuts. I wonder how many rehearsals they had. Writing, acting, blocking are brilliant. The actors' enunciation--every syllable crystal clear, unlike the mumblers of today. And it's not just funny, but meaningful.

Personally, I have always admired Joel McCrea. It never occurred to me to judge his acting skills. I am not sure I realized he was acting. I was too busy enjoying the films. This movie would be interesting if the only scene you viewed was that scene of Las Vegas. I think he was right there alongside Cary Grant a little more rough around the edges perhaps and much more “American”. I think men as handsome as he, Steve McQueen, James Dean, Rock Hudson are easily dismissed as less talented simply because they entertain us by just appearing in a film. The likes of Gene Hackman, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Spencer Tracey all are considered great actors. Before long we will be able to place any actor in any film and replace the original star to include audio and visual integration. Can you imagine James Dean replacing Charlton Heston in Ben Hur?
