Being surrounded by so much talent, & saturated with so much good music, it was only natural for us to take it for granted. Long live the 70's. More than just great music, bad fashion, & a series of historic events. It is an open minded attitude; it is neighborly love; it is acceptance & respect of viewpoints & of faiths unlike ones own. It is unity & friendliness, & hospitality. The love of the greater number has cooled off in the decades since, just as Jesus warned. But the 70's still live on, because _WE ARE THE 70's, & WE REMAIN UNCHANGED_

@@TPaine1776 Sorry, I don't agree! Eric Clapton would also not agree. Talented, yes, but the band members, especially Levon made this band. Robbie took the majority of the profits, and the others didn't receive their proper share. Robbie showed up at the hospital when Levon was unconscious and I can assure you, Levon would have told him to get the you know what out of the hospital room. Levon always felt that the other members of the band didn't receive their rightful share of the profits. Robbie never went back to the stage with his guitar and show off his super talented fingers either. Well he did actually, but Eric Clapton had to carry to show, Robbie couldn't do it. His voice or guitar playing was limited. Robbie thought he was the greatest thing ever, but he was a average player, and his talents would not have created the Band, but Levon and the others did!

...And since Mavis & Pop individually sang a stanza (thats not a verse, but usually _four_ verses) of lead vocals, that makes them supporting singers, too. Not just backing vocalists... The Staples Family. Wow! What an everlasting treasure. Someone earlier in this comment section said 100 years from now people will still be in awe of this performance. Theyre right. I'm 71 now, but I was at this concert on Thanksgiving 1976. I had just started graduate school, had been in California for only a few months, and I liked The Band. I heard they were doing their last concert. Tickets were really expensive, but a nice dinner was included, which was unusual. After dinner we started to get mad that the view was blocked by all the people running around with movie cameras. But when the music started we knew that this was a special concert. When this song, with The Staple Singers, started, we realized it was more than just special. We could see that all of the members of the Band were so inspired. It sent an indescribable chill through the audience, which this video kind of captures. This concert, especially the performance of this song, was the best music experience of my life.

I saw this at the theater here in Charleston WV when it first came out. Back when a theater was an experience. Large auditorium with fantastic acoustics and people had the respect to be quiet and let everyone hear and see a beautiful piece of art on the big screen. I was a teenager. Probably 14, didn’t have my drivers license yet. I absolutely loved every member of the band and every guest musician was incredible and was a treat. A once in a lifetime experience that was a gift to the people who love music and rock and roll. I wish Levon was still here and I could personally thank him for the lifetime of music I have lived since then. I will be 62 in December God willing. I wrote music, played music. Recorded music. Lived it and loved it. Watched my heroes come and go. Music is an ART FORM. And just like an artist who paints . I learned that you can write 100 songs and be fortunate to have a couple of excellent songs and maybe a few good and dozens not good at all . To put it kindly. I’m happy that I had a couple I consider masterpieces. Please forgive me for rambling. It comes with age and the way I lived my life and I inherited a lot of it. Anyway. I want to say Thank you to Robbie Robertson. He is one of my all time favorites. A class act. He has represented Rock and Roll with the highest degree of integrity. Incredibly talented, he has always been one of those people who you would say it’s obvious that his parents raised him right. Thank you for being a roll model . Someone I can look back at and remember that is where I got my start. My mother kept music in our home,. She played every instrument you could think of. From piano. autoharp. Guitar . accordion . Never had a lesson. My dad never played an instrument but he liked Johnny Cash and always had 8 track tapes playing in the Chevy on our beach trips. My big brother Bill the Preacher. Payed guitar and put bands together everywhere we went. He turned me on to iron butterfly, credence Clearwater revival. Simon and Garfunkel. Bob Dylan . Elton John. Always giving me albums for my birthday. One that always stood out was Aerosmith’s hardest drug fueled album when he was away in Seminary school. To anyone who reads this. Thank you for allowing me to ramble on. Because I’m at a point where every day is a gift. Even though times are not good like they used to be. But music still gives me hope.

The past has become the future. Time is frozen with songs like this. I yearn for the days of my youth but at the same time look forward to what’s beyond. I hope that songs like this are always part of the equation.

Thankfully someone thought to record it so we can still listen to it and watch it.

There are 7 excellent vocalists on this stage. I love every verse, but Mavis......holy shit....I gotta give her the nod on this here.

He’s so high. I find him to be pathetic. Just a junkie jumping around and his voice cracking. Nah he’s a mess.

You are so right!! the late 60's and 70's were the best. I recently asked my musically talented 19 year old grandson who his favorite bands were, he told me his favorites were either retired or had already passed away...(the 60s, 70s Rock bands)

I saw this when it was released. This is the ultimate in movie presentation of the music of the 70's. The finale is a tribute to it all.

People always say that about their generation. I gotta say my adult son’s appreciate the music I grew up listening to from the 60’s & 70’s and I appreciate theirs equally because there are some amazing younger musicians.
