Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43, director Michael Mann's sprawling historical crime drama follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale ) in capturing notorious bank robber John Dillinger. A folk hero to the American public thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many people believed responsible for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was virtually unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jail could hold him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people while making headlines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's (Billy Crudup) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fledgling Bureau of Investigation into a national police force than to capture the gang that always gets away? There’s none of that here. BUT, I was only talking about the cop-robber relationship, which, although it’s different in Public Enemies than it is in Heat, no one can put to film as good as Mann can.

This is the first movie that showed me how much better of a actor Christian Bale truly is than Johnny Depp !!!! Every idiot in the comments that are talking about Depps acting in this movie obviously doesn't even know real acting whatsoever cuz his character in this film is the most bland that JD ever did in his entire career by far😂😂😂!!!! Christian Bale on the other hand is a British actor that literally killed that southern American accent of Melvin Pervis in this film while Depp literally sounds like hes just pretending to do a southern accent to his daughter or something while being high & drunk 😂😂😂 & on top of that , the real Dillinger didn't even have a southern accent in real life cuz hes from the midwest , hes not from down south 😂😂😂😂!!!! Oh yeah... & also Steven Gram as Babyface Nelson in this movie is also really great in his role & just as good playing as BFN as Richard Dreyfess was in the original 1970 Dillinger film !!!! Don't get me wrong Johnnys ok in this film but he didn't knock it out of the park playing Dillinger like Warren Oats did in the original 1970 Dillinger film did!!!! Johnny don't look anything like him or sound anything like him or even act like him other than for that scene when hes taking the photo with the warden & court commissioner!!!! He went to his brothers gas station in disguise while the police were watching just to see him. He often went home despite the risks, placing his Thompson on the kitchen table. The famous pictures of him behind a house was taken behind the family home, too. His dad talks about him in a video on KZbin too, "John Dillinger's Father Defending Him". "John Dillinger: The Life and Death of America's First Celebrity Criminal" Is a great book too.
