Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) calmly speaks to the press about the upcoming fight while Creed (Carl Weathers) fumes with anger and determination.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
By concentrating on character development with this first of several sequels to his Oscar-winning smash Rocky (1976), writer/director Sylvester Stallone earned critical praise that would desert him with the boxing saga's shallower subsequent chapters. Stallone returns as Rocky Balboa, a Philadelphia prize fighter enjoying his brief fame after nearly defeating world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). When Rocky is offered lucrative product endorsement opportunities, his limited education and lack of sophistication quickly become an impediment to his future success, causing him embarrassment and his pregnant wife, Adrian (Talia Shire), a great deal of financial concern. Meanwhile, Creed is brooding over his near loss to a fighter he considers an amateur far beneath him and decides to goad a reluctant Rocky into a high-profile rematch. With the family resources dwindling and his pride wounded, Rocky decides that fighting is all he knows and makes the fateful decision to climb back into the ring once more with Creed to vie for the championship belt, despite assurances from all concerned that he will blind himself irreparably.

Loved this scene. For me, Rocky 2 is the best of the series because of character development. Apollo isn't a villain. He's not evil. Just a highly driven boxer that wants to prove to America that the last fight was a fluke.

apollo was driven by pride in this film, which some Christians would say is one of THE WORST evils in existence. His pride shown throughout the Rocky story lead to his eventual downfall and death!!!!! With Stallone being a Christian, I'm wondering if he wrote the story to deliberately show how destructive pride can be, or if it was accidental!!!!! Either way, it was a touch of storytelling genius, in my book!!!!!

Actually on the contrary Rocky being so cordial and polite and joking around is what's really setting Apollo off!! Apollo wants everyone to know he's the best and here comes this journeyman who's not even top ranked, gives him the fight of his life and then comes in all casual for this press conference like it's a light-hearted friendly get together while Apollo is taking this ultra seriously to defend his reputation and be all business. In a way you kind of can't blame him for getting upset.

What I love about this is how Apollo is playing up his "bad guy" routine but every time Rocky talks, he's realizing how simply geniune and kind he is. You can tell from Carl Weathers acting that Apollo kinda feels guilty that he's setting himself as the aggressor in their conference

Two great scenes that show us so much about the many layers of Apollo Creed by the great, Carl Weathers. :)

And in the end, he sadly left the franchise due to Creed's great flaw that he introduced in Rocky 1& 2 - his hubris. Cost him the title in 1&2 wound up killing him in 4.

I always thought this movie was to show how slow Rocky was. He may have been an excellent fighter, and could adapt in a bout, but he lacked in academics such as speech and wasn’t observant of his surroundings. This movie and Rocky V were the only films that showed Rocky in this light.

Honestly I think that was the fascinating aspect of Rocky: he was humble. He knew Apollo was good, hell Apollo was a champion. And win or lose, Rocky was going in it not to prove anything, hell not even to wine. He was in it for the sport, for the game. Now THAT is what sports SHOULD be about.

⁠R.I.P., Carl Weathers. I got a notification from the FOX News app on my phone around the time I went to lunch, today saying "Actor Carl Weathers of 'Predator', 'Rocky' & other various roles passes away at the age of 76.", or, something like that. I literally didn't believe it, at first. I saw the same thing, again when I was watching one of my world news programs on Newsmax, recently because it displayed something about it on the scroll on the bottom of the screen summarizing various news items. All I know is that his family said that he passed away in his sleep & no cause of death was given, yet--if any. Paulie & Mickey have since passed away, as well. Burt Young passed away in October of 2023 & Burgess Meredith passed away in September of 1997, I believe. Carl Weathers passed away, yesterday & why the news of it is coming out, now is beyond me. Be that as it may, it's a real shame... Carl Weathers passed away, too soon...

I love that usually it is Apollo bringing the circus to the table. But now, he is serious. He could always back it up before but now there was doubt, externally and internally. The worst part is that Rocky is humble, likeable and unintentionally making people laugh. It is almost like Rocky is not taking him seriously though that is definitely not the case. It's a case of everything to lose vs everything to gain.

I always liked watching the look on Creed's face when Rocky starts talking about the stuff he's going to buy with the money he earns from the fight (pay the rent, some Muppet toys, snowcone machine for Paulie, etc). It's like for a moment, Creed's expression softens, but then he has to remind himself that he's out to destroy this chump (but secretly, he likes him).
