Wow, this movie is more than a musical. There is a lot of messages that we can learn from this movie. (as black folk). Oz never existed, but only in Dorothy's world. That was Dorothy in each of those characters and that's the way she only could express herself. In real life she was a timid and shy girl. The Tin Man; she had subdued feelings of losing her parents and all of her inside emotions; Scarecrow; when her auntie suggested she should go to a different level than teaching the kindergarten class, she new she was smart but she was fearful from moving to the next level, and Lion; even though she had some sense of pride, she didn't let nobody come close enough to see her vulnerability, and that all she was holding on to. It took a strange occurrence to go within herself to realize her power that it was always in her. Even the great Richard Prior as the Wiz, he was not the answer, because it was in her all along, she had the answers. But let me stop preachin to ya'll!

She was NOT a great singer. Just like Beyonce and Janet Jackson. Whisperer and soft singers. Just beautiful commercial artist. She was ok. She has been singing for over 66 years. She was singing before Stephanie Mills was born. She sang during the Civil Rights Movement. She inspired many black celebrities like Oprah. She is a Supreme singer. All singers in the 1950s and 1960s had to be able sing to get into Motown. Not like 1980s and 1990 singers. Thank you, Diana, for paving the way. Loving your Broadway singing voice.

@@carriemitchell4745 She was all that, yes, ok! But still we have ears and can hear. Listen to her sing🤷🏾♂️ Let's go with "Where did our love go" "Upside Down" 🙂"Love Hangover" (which I love!) "Endless love!" Just listen! Great arrangements, great songs, but please listen to the voice. It's talking through the songs and light and whispy. It just is🤷🏾♂️ Of all the Supreams she was viewed as most attractive and commercial. Heck, she dated Barry Gordy didn't she? They have a child. She positioned herself to get some great music and opportunity. That's ok. Not hating her. I am just evaluating singing and saying listen to Gladys Knight. Aretha Franklin, even Pattie LaBell. There are others but the voices are stronger and the range is broader. Even in this performance that began this discussion, just look at the struggle to hold the notes and the lack of breath. Look at the strain in the throat? At one point she even gives up a note and shakes it off saying "Uhh!" It looked painful. Also she had to start screaming out some of the words which gave great effect and effort BUT the greatest don't have to scream. I know he is a man but I don't imagine Luther Vandros screaming... She did exceedingly well with the things she had but just NOT a singer to bring you to tears with her voice quality. Now with her performance? Maybe 🤔 But that is what I am saying in a nutshell...Great performer that also sings a little but not a great voice of our times🙂 Come at me. I'm ready 🤺😉

I love this performance. Singing, but she was also acting . I love Patti LaBelle oh Danny boy and Aretha Franklin chain of fools. Dionne Warwick. @@carriemitchell4745 Absolutely Agreed! They want Beyonce to be Diana of today, but, she can't "B" (see what I did there 😭) Anyway, she can't act! Diana was able to do a bit of everything. Lady Sings The Blues? Yeh, you can't top it as a classic. Her, Richard Pryor, Billy D! It gets no better and she did a superb job acting in that. She could cut a rug up pretty good too. I see you saying she is top shelf. She is. I just don't think it's on the singing voice alone but taking her in as a whole she embodied "Triple Threat!" Have a Happy New Year's.. Yes. That's why it's just one shot right on her face. Diana was notoriously not a great lip syncher. She couldn't fake this performance. (Lena's song has just a couple of cuts. Don't know if it's because they did a few takes and used the best parts, or if the cut aways to the babies was to reinforce the message that she's telling the young people that they need to believe in themselves.)

More trivia: it was reported at the time that when Ms Ross saw the rush releases of Ms Horne's stunning performance, she went back and redid hers. Lol. When asked about this incident in an Ebony magazine interview, Lena Horne evaded the question. It's probably a true story, knowing the insecurities of the Wicked Witch of Motown.

Well all i can say is blackbarbiedoll as you i gave it all lowercase letters, they know not of what they speak, and I'm sure if that was I'm sure Quincy Jones would have made her do it over, as was he totally stretched Diana vocals giving her a new and emotional voice to sing with, and not robotic perfection. And that is why she and her career have blueprint for most female singers who then actresses and fashion designers. This is a person who never studied acting took on the part of Billie Holiday even though she doesn't look sound like yet gets nominated for an Oscar she doesn't win that year it Liza Minelli but even Liza who saw Diana as Billie Holiday while being interviewed said that DR deserved this more than me. I can never understand how people can sit faceless behind a computer critic something truly great. And this is performer who never got into this for the money she just wanted to have record on radio, but if you have been DR concert you see how much she loves perform and how strong and perfect vocals are live. This is a singer from 60 's when they had to use there own ears to hear themselves sing therefore they are much better singers than singers today. I saw her in central park on the rain day, probably greatest performance i've ever witnessed live. This is a woman who when it started raining pouring rain did not run and even with all the lightening she stood on that stage ushering out to make sure no one got hurt. And she will go down in history as one of the greatest performers not dancers or even singers but performers of all time and no can ever take that from EVER.

I was not expecting her to be this good. Sure she had some issues here and there but you can tell she sang this live on film as her tears and voice cracks matched up b/c she was so emotional in the song. Miss Ross doesn't get the credit she deserves for being a solid actress in addition to a performer.

@Nick Xero umm... if you have ever heard the original from Stephanie Mills who originated the role on Bway you'd know what I am talking about.

I believe she lip synced to her own recording. Something I don't believe was meant to be "perfect". Whatever perfect means. It's emotional and emotions can have a crack in the voice, not a perfect note, etc.

@@andresuston7692It’s much harder to do longer scenes in one take because if you mess up, you have to start all over again. Doing multiple shots gives you breathing room.

This song has been my mantra in life, "If you are at home with yourself, you are home wherever you go." Diana Ross nailed it again in 2018 when she sang it live in NYC during the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Square. Diana is a superstar who is more precious to me now than ever!

She moves me with her voice and presence. This song is one of my favor tear markers as well as Lena Hornes Believe. The story about this was Diana damage her corneas staring into the light. If you look at her eyes you can see the light. This is a very underrated film that deserves more praise even now as it a timeless classic.
