@@HaimTabibi jealous of the Navy? 😂😂😂😂😂. I have great friends who are retired Navy, but I damn sure ain’t jealous lol. I was able to tour the USNS Comfort in Rota, Spain, and it was awesome, but I rather enjoyed getting back in my rental car and driving back to my hotel in Sevilla. I was able to tour a destroyer I think in Virginia Beach and an Aircraft Carrier. Coolest things I’ve ever seen, but never wanted to spend six months on them. I will admit I entertained joining the Navy after watching Top Gun LOL.

For those who don't know, the real life Mike Vickers was a total badass. He scored the highest score possible on the Army intelligence test before joining the Army Special Forces. Despite his unassuming appearance (you can't find many pictures of Mike from back then but the ones I've seen show they portrayed his stature pretty accurately in the movie) he was considered one of the foremost experts in hand to hand combat. In addition to joining the special forces he also successfully passed Ranger school and cross trained with the SEALS and SAS. Mike was reportedly obsessed with Soviet weapons and tactics which is the main reason Gust came to him for Operation Cyclone. Post Cold War he gained his Ph.D in International Relations and went on to serve in both the defense and intelligence departments under two presidents. At one point during Barack Obama's administration he was the highest level civilian intelligence offical.

Chess is a game about strategy, so if you want a character to immediately come off as meticulous or cunning before they even open their mouths, chess is a pretty innocuous shorthand to convey such a thing. In this instance it’s different because my dude’s playing with multiple people simultaneously, which does demonstrate his quick thinking and strategic mind. Chess isn’t a hard game, but trying to keep up with more than one game is above what most people can do, and he’s doing it pretty damn well.

The problem is you have more pieces that have to be carried around (180 just for white), and the board has more small locations (361 in total). Chess is one where you only have to worry about 16 pieces, a total of 64 locations, yet each piece has its own specific rules

I suppose he's giving a more comprehensive list of armament the fighters needed in general, but none of these arms, save for the manpads, 170mm rockets, and RPGs were any big whoop, and like you said, none of this list besides possibly those three (at close range) could even come close to taking down a Hind. I've only gotten into guns a few years ago, and I've since become utterly disgusted how ignorant most Hollywood writers are about weapons generally, and guns in particular. If Charlie Wilson was half as smart as he supposedly was, he'd have been able to assemble this list or something better himself with a moment's reflection. Pathetic.

Pretty sure it's more about all the supplies they'd need to fight back effectively, not just about shooting down helicopters. The reason they need AKs is because then they can scavenge supplies from the Russians after they kills a bunch or steal their supplies instead of being totally reliant on the US being able to supply them. (And being unable to fight if those supply lines get cut.) Then you've got anti-tank and APC weapons, mines that can avoid easy detection and can be left to disrupt troop movements and cause extra casualties, long distance weapons for pinprick raids and ambushes to bleed the Soviets out and lower morale, more effective communication that's harder for the Soviets to track... Charlie is overly focused on the Hinds and other helicopters like a Hip. Vickers is talking about the broader picture of what needs to be done in the overall conflict.

Chris Wolff Ron Howard's films are... meh. Definitely nothing groundbreaking or amazing. Philip Seymour Hoffman totally becomes every character I’ve ever seen him play. Notice how he totally dominates the great Tom Hanks here. Tom Hanks feels like Tom Hanks still but PSH is totally immersed in his character. Truly one of the greatest actors I’ve ever witnessed. He died at the peak of his career… who knows how many more great performances we lost. He reminds me of Daniel Day Lewis in his versatility and authenticity.

Breaks my heart that we've lost PSH. He was a master of acting. When he died, it was so hard to watch films with him in them. I used to watch the big Lebowski weekly, after he died I didn't watch it for about a year. Every role he did, he gave something that most actors couldn't - it was some special ability where he owned the role and you just knew that no one could ever do it better, past present or future.

I know it's just a movie but nobody there was ever in the military (irl). One of the problems with movies is that... you can't fake what someone who's been in the military acts like. Their basic mannerisms. It's very difficult.

This reminds me of The Deep Water Horizon oil rig investigation when a guy was cross examining the electrical engineer on the rig...I was paying attention his line of questions were leading to find out if the engineer was Qualified. When asked where he got his training he answered " I was an electrical engineer on America's Harrier jet program".... from then on the guy asking the questions addressed him as " Sir"

I actually met a Green Beret at a bar recently. Same age as me... totally unassuming guy. Normal, average looking, fit but not a big guy. Totally unassuming and took me completely off-guard. I was immediately impressed by his tact and succinctness when speaking.
