CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After sleeping together, Joanne (Julia Roberts) tells Charlie (Tom Hanks) her plan for Afghanistan and convinces him to meet with the Egyptian president.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Produced by Tom Hanks, written by Aaron Sorkin, and directed by Mike Nichols, this adaptation of George Crile III's incendiary bestseller tells the remarkable story of the Texas congressman whose efforts to prevent the Red Army from overtaking Afghanistan eventually led to the collapse of the Soviet Union while simultaneously fueling the rise of radical Islam. In the early 1980s, a hastily assembled army of Afghan "freedom fighters" achieved the remarkable feat of fending off Soviet invaders despite the fact that the odds were overwhelmingly stacked against them. At the time, Texas congressman Charlie Wilson (Hanks) was a key member of the hugely powerful House Appropriations Committee. Illuminated to the specifics of this remarkable war by a high-profile Houston socialite, Wilson spearheaded an effort to provide hundreds of millions of dollars in weapons and training to the Mujahideen with more than a little help from brilliant but prickly CIA operative Gust Avrokotos.

in the Charlie Wilson's War book, credit is given to Joanne for making it all work. Actually that's scary, that big national events are controlled by so few people....but the good part is, they are sometimes able to bypass institutions and make things happen...that's what the book is about, I would recommend it.

I do love the subtle nod that Charlie can _perform_ during that last comment about their disparate counts. Joanne may be ruthless, canny, and powerful, but Charlie Wilson was no slouch in any measure and the facts speak volumes. We stand with our endurance king, not least because he took good advice and tried to pass it to Congress about the ensuing power vacuum and the issues it would cause.

Congressman Charlie Wilson was tall, handsome, and has a strong Texan drawl. So I gathered ,after seeing his interviews. Tom Hanks is an excellent actor , but I can’t figure , for what is worth, why producers, movie director, and casting personnel would not consider Sam Elliott for the part. He’s got it all. His voice pitch is as close as it can get to Congressman Charlie Wilson. He is lanky, has the drawl. And Geena Davis made it terrific in Thelma & Louise. Oh well, sour grapes.

He's not a big enough star to lead in this movie.... also he's too old. He's like 13 years older than Hanks and had already aged out of this part when they made this. Not to mention this movie was produced by Hank's production company Playtone, so I assume it doesn't even get made without him pushing for it.
@aurelmatthews4164
@aurelmatthews4164 Жыл бұрын
He was probably a bit too old. But you also have to realize that producers and directors can't always work magic, the actor that might be just perfect for the role might simply say no or is occupied with other stuff. Then there's also marketing and recognition. Tom Hanks is a huge star and was even HUGER in the early 2000's so getting him to play the lead or part in your film is a big seller.

I'm amazed that two such accomplished actors were allowed to do such a pathetic job at producing a Texas accent. Notice how they say a soft R sound (eveh, radah, ahmah) instead of a hard R like we do in Texas. Tom Hanks sounds more like Foghorn Leghorn than the real Charlie Wilson.

Those are east Texas accents, which don't make it to American movies much. That's why you're ignorant of this accent and think they're doing a bad job. Notice that he says he has some trouble with the Dairy Queen in Nacogdoches. That's a town in the swampland of east Texas, and Tom Hanks does a great job with the accent and how to pronounce that difficult place name. Julia Roberts also does a pretty good job with the east Texas accent here.

By doing this, we invited the crazies to Afghanistan. It wasn’t lack of schools, roads, etc. the Afghans who were there SAW who came to the call for a jihad. They didn’t like them, but we’re happy enough they were fighting. @@jacklynch3333 Here's what you do, you occupy them in an actual humane way for 20 years, so that the next regime isn't as absurdy stupid as the last. It wasn't perfect, a lot of money was wasted, but the schools that were built wasn't for nothing, and the US war in Afghanistan did have a real impact on the country, definitely for the better. It will still be decades until we actually get to see the long term consequences of the US occupation though. Also, I think this movie actually hammers a pretty important point. Money shouldn't have been wasted on failing infrastructure, it should have been used for schools that could've indoctrinated children. 20 years is enough time to indoctrinate an entire generation, which could have proven very useful, but that's just us looking back with hindsight.

Mike Nichols, R.I.P., was a genius of a director, and this movie is plenty slick, but this is a perfect example of his political cowardice or wishy-washiness. This is a right-wing picture, when all is said and done. There are little cover-your-ass hints, such as the anecdote about the Zen master etc., but it's all about the Cold War, arming groups, being pro-active, and pouring more weapons into the region. Not cool at all. If you are going to make a movie about something like this, be clear what you're for or against. Don't play it cute.

It was neutral and focused on the historical aspect of how a few unknown individuals fought a covert war by bringing opposing sides on the same table and actually unknowingly won the war which resulted in the breaking up of the Soviet Union. - It wasn't right wing or left wing. It was a master piece. - You're interpreting it based on your bias. As a Muslim I'm interpreting it as an act of God on how He works in mysterious ways. In this case toppling the Communist Godless giant at the hands of poor rag tag mujahideen funded by the US.
