And I was shy then, so when she would look at me, I would look away. Then afterwards, when I would look back, she would look away. Then I got to where I was gonna get off, and got off. The doors closed. And as the train was pulling away, she looked right at me and gave me the most incredible smile. It was awful. I wanted to tear the doors open. I went back every night, same time, for two weeks, but she never showed up. That was 30 years ago, and I don't think that there's a day that goes by that I don't think about her. She just doesn't seem interested and everything feels so forced. She tells me she has to go to the bathroom and walks away. Game over. So I go to my friends and we sink our drinks and leave. As I'm walking out of the club I turn around and see if I can see her one last time, and she's sitting back at the lounge in the exact spot she was in before, giving me the most stunning smile. I told my friends I had to go back and I did, and stumbled through some conversation before leaving again. Nothing happened. 13 years later and I'm married, with a good job and getting on with life. @@jynger71 I'd agree with you that he's enigmatic in some sense. He's certainly a gambler, and he directly tells her early on the boat, "I bought you because you said you couldn't be bought." But the conclusion of the film belies his practicality. We shouldn't forget that he's the one who breaks it off with her and suggests that she return to David to be happier. It suggests that he doesn't merely want to win a woman who might love someone else more that she loves him. He didn't win here. He acknowledged that he lost. When he ended it, his driver said "What the hell was that about?" Suggesting that he was truly baffled and that this isn't a regular game for Gage. It suggests that Gage genuinely values being loved back. Someone who seeks that genuineness, a hopeless romantic if you will, who also happens to be supremely handsome and alluring while also having unlimited means can't possibly be single for long. I'd expect that from a Don Juan who only cares about quantity or the thrill of a hunt. I wouldn't expect it from an empathetic sweetheart like Gage turns out to be in the end.

I was accompanied by a girl who was taking a class with me. I saw her cry on more than one occasion. We were young and I didn't understand the value of those tears at the time. I let her go without telling her what she expected. Maybe I lost the love of my life and I didn't realize. When I wanted to look for her again, I just remembered her name. She had moved. Not the kind you find while tipsy at a bar locking eyes with someone who is attracted to you too. wallstreetfox3 You obviously didn't get the point of this scene, did you?
@wallstreetfox38 жыл бұрын
Christian 4_Realzz He's telling her a lie. This poon hound doesn't think of that girl every day. He's appealing to her emotions. His heart is stone.
@Cinemabuff978 жыл бұрын
wallstreetfox3 I'm not quite sure if that is correct.
@wallstreetfox38 жыл бұрын
Christian 4_Realzz Ok, at the end of the movie he tells his assistant that she would never look at him the way she looks at her husband.That implies he has feelings but the movie is a little uneven in his characters motives. You still have a heart of stone if you have a little "game" you want to play to sleep with a guys wife but it also implies she could have stayed with him. It's a little contradictory.

This is a better scene than the end scene, more emotion, proper Romanic. They messed up on the ending.

The scenery is telling. A big empty house, devoid of laughter, delight and life. The house has all the elements of taste without personality, it is 'bought taste' - neo-classical columns, marble floors and roman balustrades, all signs of a house reflecting his life - empty, silent, cold with a surface layer of photocopied meaning, a copy of a copy of cultural significance that has lost its originality, much like Robert Redfords character, and the life of many of the rich.

There's such beautiful melancholy in this scene. Is there a man on this earth who hasn't had such an experience.

Best scene of this movie, and so relatable to me. I met an older man like Redford, I was Moore's age, and undeniable chemistry. We met at work, never forgot him, and those times.💕🕊🌹

With the story about "the girl who got away" he is telling her that he won't let that happen again; he is telling her that, the "new girl" he saw this time (and won't let go away) is her.

Demi is so gorgeous, and its hard to top her with a matching romeo and i must admit, RR is such a romeo, he does it over and beyond. Both of them have Perfect Star Presence - they both look Perfect - great casting for the 2 of them. they complement each other.

This was the ONLY time in the film I felt anything but contempt for Redford's character. This scene, and the end scene where he let her go back to Woody saved his character from being an evil caricature. Moore's character was also loathesome. She didn't HAVE to go through with it, and she refused to take any responsibility by blaming the entire affair on Woody. He was wrong for ever considering Redford's proposal, but he tried to stop it.
@Cinemabuff978 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Plus letting us feel sympathy for Robert Redford's character was a good decision, instead of leaving his character as an evil man.

I felt for him all the way through the movie, he was lonely, had an emptiness and a longing that we all have....I actually thought the movie was very sad, my feelings were for Redford all the way through.... but I don't condone such behaviour obviously... He could have tried speed dating or something :o

I think he had that feeling when he sees Demi in that shop admiring the dress. When he finally meets her husband he looks at him as a loser. I can give her such a better life. He probably feels I can offer this guy more money than he ever had or will see and I can have her. I think it was his plan from the moment he meets Woody.
@Jukeboxster4 жыл бұрын
It was Woody's fault. What Moore's character wanted was for Woody's character to say hell no you can't have my wife for $100 million dollars. She wanted him to step up and be a man. Even in the proposal scene she had to say "he'd tell you to go to hell" first and only after that did he follow. Woody wasn't a man, she was the alpha.

I had somewhat of a similar experience. Met a girl in the subway who approached me to ask for directions. She was very sweet and really really beautiful. She even said I looked nice. I was so shy and distracted I thought it was disrespectful if I asked for her number. She was from Venezuela....ehhhh we live and we learn 🤣

I was once sitting in a cafe and noticed that a cute girl sitting a few tables away was looking at me. She was with a group of friends. We locked eyes, then looked away. This happened a few times. After a while, I was looking down at my table or something else, and suddenly she pops up and leaves a me a note with her number. We had a few dates after that, but didn't go anywhere, although we were in touch for some years after that. Fun experience but never happened to me again. I did lock eyes with other girls but no one else dared to leave me their number!

*I've had a few "situations" in my life similar to this (all decades ago), and to this day I still remember every one of them.* So, I immediately "felt" the point that he was making in this scene, especially when he uttered the punch line, *it was awful.* This is, to me, probably the best scene in the movie. It would've been even more painful if at 1:17 instead of saying "she never showed up", he had said *I never saw her again.* Not to rain on Redford's parade here, cuz he did an awesome job in this scene.

Your last comment reminds me of a song in Spanish from awhile back, called "Tu Inolvidable Sonrisa" (your unforgettable smile). In the song, the singer is saying that he could forget everything about the person, but will never forget her smile. Beautiful song.

I saw a man, handsome, works in my building. One day he opened the door for me and we smiled at each other. A week later he walks past me and I notice him. I look up and gives me the most incredible smile. I give him the same. Another week goes by and he’s with his freind this time and I could not for the life of me look up but I know in my soul he was looking at me. Now this week I haven’t seen him yet and now I can’t sleep. What if he thinks I’m not interested? Will he try again? Oh God. He has to!
