I am really AGONIZING when reading those comments about the score: "it's too modern", "awful synthesized soundtrack"... WTF?? Really??? Come on, guys, this WHOLE soundtrack is a f*cking MASTERPIECE. Do you really think that OST in today's movies based on ancient worlds do not have loads of synthesized sounds??
@0legacy235 жыл бұрын
I understand your opinion and I have no problem with the soundtrack (it didn't really mark me) but admit when you have a masterpiece like "Conan the Barbarian soundtrack by Basil Poledouris" from 1982 who match perfectly with the movie it's not the same level
@austinaxley815 жыл бұрын
Lord of the Rings Harry Potter Chronicles of Narnia The Fountain I could start naming great modern fantasies with amazing OSTs that aren't synthesized and not stop for weeks. Not that it's bad it's just indicative of its time. Most fantasy soundtracks nowadays rely on exotic instruments like the iljeann pipes, or the sitar to evoke a feeling of fantasy and mysticism, not synthesizers.
@dannieanonymous80835 жыл бұрын
@@austinaxley81 I beg to differ I simply luv TD & Alan Parsons's Project But i can't name many medieval fantasy /epic film's, that have used synthesized (proto-electronic works) still The sorcererer / a masterpiece (not so muxh the remake of a movie) The keep The thief (James Caan, as well as the musical undertones, simply outworldish)
@austinaxley815 жыл бұрын
@@dannieanonymous8083 yup that was the point I was making. The OP's claim, or rather challenge, was to name a modern fantasy OST that doesn't use synthesizers. My point was that you would be hard pressed to find one that *does*. Even though I don't necessarily have a problem with synth they're just not all that common in fantasy. Probably moreso in sci-fi.

Great use of the costumes too -- Navarre in black, forced out of his rightful place but actually the true servant of god and the right, battling the evil men who hypocritically wear white. I've loved this movie for 30+ years, even with its flaws (music and a too-modern performance by Broderick).

@chooseyourpoison51054 жыл бұрын
@@gawainethefirst No, if they used a full orchestra it would be just another sweeping fantasy movie a la Lord of the Rings. The delicate electronic music and the beautiful horn arrangements are what makes this movie distinctive, and adds an almost ethereal and otherworldly atmosphere.

I too always thought that the music by Andrew Powell and Alan Parsons was a little too over the top on the synth and an awkward fit to the film. I could be wrong, I haven't seen the film in a while. But I always loved the story and the design of the film nonetheless.

@chooseyourpoison51054 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying and I agree, but he also says "It will doom her to a half life, and that is not what she wants." I assumed that Imperius or Philippe had let Isabeau know of Navarre's plans to end their enchantment, and that Isabeau had told them to end her existence if the plan failed and Navarre died. Earlier in the film Navarre goes nuts when he thinks Hawk-Isabeau might die from her arrow wound, and is even kneeling praying "please" as Philippe takes the wounded hawk to Imperius, so I can't imagine he would ask Imperius to kill her unless it was Isabeau's express wish.

If they could re-score this film it would be a fantasy masterpiece...seriously! Even more than Superman, Richard Donner directs this earnest, well acted, and well cast film with a steady eye and avoids camp. It really should have catapulted Rutger Hauer to stardom but I think the audiences were still to do fond of "bad boy" anti heroes to accept a straight ahead hero. The film just works so well accccccept for the God awful synthesised soundtrack that mostly rubs through the film. There is orchestral stuff which is fine but the synthesised organ during most of the chase scenes just pulls me right out of the film. Really too bad as Donner usually scores his films well.

My thoughts exactly when I first rented the film back in the 80's. I'd never heard of it, rented it because of the cover (and because of Rutger). I was completely surprised by the music, completely out of date with the setting of the movie. I'm used to it now, but it just doesn't fit.

Might be, might not. Guts' helmet looks similar to Navarre's, and, well, there is an eclipse, a curse, a kind of triangle between Navarre, Isabeau and the bishop, betrayal, Navarre turns into a wolf which is an animal associated with Guts, she is a hawke. Maybe there are more details that they share but who knows if it was intentional. I wouldn't be surprised though.
