The book is my favourite ever, getting me in to reading again. Mrs Hubbard is my favourite character in fiction but the star of this movie is the Swedish ladies' performance. She didnt have many lines but killed it. Everyone did very well. I dont know the older generations actors but apparently virtually all the cast was a highly respected actor/actress and i thought all the main characters were portrayed with integrity. 👍

They wanted Bergman to play the Russian princess, she demurred for the less showy role of the missionary, director Lumet says that after shooting it in 1 close-up, Bergman stood & gave him a kiss, got her the Oscar, which she graciously said during her acceptance speech should have gone to her competition, Valentina Cortese.

I think I've seen all movies that were made and Albert Finney IS Hercule Poirot. I liked Kenneth Branagh, David Suchet, and John Malkovich portrayals too. The 1974 version is the best .

I like Suchet, but the ITV MOTOE version is very flawed and not one of his finest achievements. Finney has a strange accent, but is a joy to watch (as is the all star cast). Whereas the Branagh version is simply awful.

Suchet is always my #1 choice for Poirot, but I didn't like his version of this story. Way too focused on religion and God, when that it nowhere in the original novel, where Poirot submits his solutions and doesn't hem and haw or grieve over what God will think about everything, and when the authorities choose which solution to believe, he retires from the case and he's fine with it.

@KIMPOY971 Well, to you, 1974, I guess, is old. To me, 1944 is old; so it's all relative. I was fortunate enough to see the original MOTOE in my hometown theatre with my entire family. But now, as for *boring*...?? This movie has a stellar cast, a rich and frothy score, great set design and costumes, and all directed by the inimitable Sidney Lumet! I'd hardly (ever) call that boring!

The books never definitively describe what the moustache looks like, just that they curl up at the end, and Christie often describes them as "moustaches". So each Poirot adaptation is free to portray the moustache as they see fit.

I was kind of hoping for a case that I the viewer could figure out myself but it was pretty impossible in this one. Maybe I'm a bit slow and maybe it's easier to figure out by reading the book but with all the "suspects" and Poirot and others not being the easiest to understand in parts it was impossible. That's probably why I'm not a detective. Great classic movie though with a stellar cast.

All the other nominees were Oscar veteran’s but Carney’s was unexpected and audiences liked the idea of Ed Norton being an Oscar nominee and Academy voters liked the idea too, they embraced him and the quirky film. I believe Kenneth Branagh truly loves Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot, and that he's trying to make the Marvel Cinematic Universe generation love them, too. And since he's actually directed a movie for the MCU (Thor) and other mainstream movies, he's in the unique position of understanding what parts of the modern superhero formula he can inject in to Poirot to catch on with modern audiences. I think he's worth mentioning in the same breath as Suchet or Ustinov.

He feels less of a superhero, especially as he is in a unpredictable and unprecedented situation, yet his take on Poirot is still very uniquely in his style. The balance is right, and I feel like he’s finally hit a home run both with the character and the films, I didn’t like the previous 2 that much but A Haunting In Venice was very watchable and held my interest.

Albert Finney was a great actor, and he does the absolute most with the character of Hercule Poirot and is entertaining as heck to watch . . . but he's still probably my least favorite Poirot. His version of Poirot is so over-the-top weird and that gravelly Belgian accent is so distracting. Especially now that David Suchet and Kenneth Branagh instilled the same character with so much more humanity even while keeping all of his eccentricities still on full display.

Finney ONLY Poirot to be Oscar nominated Best Actor, he is unrecognizable from his many other GREAT performances, was performing on stage @ night & bringing his theatricality to this performances during the day, he was my 1st Poirot & only 1 I find watchable, his over the topness makes suspects underestimate him, while Ustinov is too comedic, Suchet effete narcissist (undeservedly so) while Branagh wears CGI rodent for mustache.

So when Agatha Christie saw this movie and went on record to say he was the closest thing to her interpretation...she was wrong ?....good or bad in people's minds don't matter....what does is the original...whoever played the part first...every actor afterwards can improve or change what the last actor did or didn't....fine example...Sean Connery as Bond..many say Daniel Craig is the best, he's the sixth actor to play him, of course he fine tuned the part...see what I mean

Other actors hadn't really taken Poirot seriously as his own character (Austin Trevor basically made him Sherlock Holmes and Tony Randall basically made him Inspector Closeau) so the bar was set pretty low during her lifetime. I wonder what Agatha would have thought of Ustinov (her daughter didn't approve; she famously told Ustinov "Poirot's not like you" to which he replied "He is now, my dear) or Suchet. I think Brannagh's doing a bang-up job, too. Finney just played up Poirot's weirdness. Ustinov, Suchet, and Branagh balanced out the weirdness with more humanity.

Not a good movie. It's rather pedantic, with lots of scenes dragging on for no reason, even an aesthetic one for that matter. On the other hand, many short scenes are too short for their own good, resulting in them not making any kind of sense in terms of plot development or artistic meaning. Also, the characters are not one bit interesting. The director doesn't seem to be even remotely interested in who they are and why are they the way they are.

Pretty much every scene is from the book, and they are all significant in that they are key to the murder before and after the truth is revealed. The "over eccentric mannerisms" of Poirot are right out of the books so they are completely faithful to the source material. The only movie version of her books that Dame Agatha liked. What you term "insignificant" is vital for plot structure and kept me riveted. To each his/her own. And the grudging acceptance by Poirot of those people taking the law into their own hands is pure Christie and much better than the shoehorning in of all the religious/conscience stricken stuff into the Suchet version.

That's just the way the book ends. The movies have been culprit or over dramatizing Poirot 1974: best character wise 2010: why would he be so emotional when people lie to him, he should've used to by now 2019: unrealistic portrayal of the character with ocd tendencies, and his search for balance. Poirot in the book was just content with how he solved the mystery, how deep inside he believed what Cassetti did was unforgivable and how he understood the motives behind everyone's actions... He presents the two possibilities weaving all the lies together and then what really happened not because he is trying to sound smart In a "Ha! Knew your plan all along" it was for them to be on the same page when questioned by the Yugoslavian police. He was perfectly fine with letting all of them go, he just wanted peace and now that he finally was able to solve the mystery, there wasn't anything else that motivated him, not even the culprit behind it all.
