I think some of the commenters didn’t see the movie. The movie doesn’t sugarcoat the ugly side of not attending school, not having friends, only know authoritarian discipline. It’s an amazing movie but the lifestyle is shown to not be an amazing choice.

It is not amazing in the sense that it was an easy fun choice. It was extremely difficult and challenging. Amazing that it was possible. What has come out of it as a "side order" ? One result - a way to teach autistic children surfing is one that I have heard. Doc's grandchild.

@@sueme1954 You are Doc's grandchild?
@sueme19543 жыл бұрын
@@billc6460 No. One of his grandchildren was born autistic and his father, Doc's son, found a path to him with the help of surfing. Doc's son has helped other children with that method.

One of the best documentaries ever made. Far from sensationalist or one-dimensional, but an honest and authentic portrait of an unusual family. An all time "Certified Fresh"

Fascinating. I couldn't form an opinion on this other than it made me feel so many things - sadness anger excitement... It was so educational. The impact of valuing physical health over emotional health and mental health, and the importance of education in life. Wow. I've been off the grid a couple of years, as a lawyer who became her father's Guardian when he got cancer, and then couldn't bring herself back into the system. But I just saw this and I got it. If we don't go back into the system. Learn it. And do it our way, how will we ever change it? This is why the world has become what it is. All the good people opted out. And it's just not the answer.

This is a perfect picture of a cult. One narcissistic authoritarian dominating and controlling everyone in the group. Everything is done the way he wants it to be done. It looks paradisiacal ... I don't think it was.

Perfectly spot on! Just recently saw this and thought some of the Paskowitz members especially Doc were a bit weird.

I remember when this movie came out, I immediately bought the video and have enjoyed it ever since. When I view it, I'm reminded that I'm not the only Jewish kid in America with a set of screwed up parents...

Is not interesting because i think school is important for children. Life is hard, we must prepare our children.

Except they had no education, no skills, no way of functioning in the world. They were chained to an authoritarian father.
