Thank you Dexter. The screen is actually the wall painted with brilliant white emulsion. It's the best option if a wall is available because it's flat, cheap to paint, easy to maintain and costs hardly anything to ever maintain. I painted a black border in and then used cardboard with deep black velvet to use as the masking which takes the screen size down to seven feet (give or take a couple of inches). I give more detail on this in a home cinema tour video I put up sometime after this Jaws video. It's amazing what you can do with string and sticky tape! Motorizing everything is surprisingly easy as all you really need is three curtain motors, two corded curtain rails and a roller blind. I control it all using X10 remote control (which is getting on for 20 years old now but it still works) but it can be done via extension leads and power switches. The lights are on X10 dimmers so I just press buttons once it's all powered up. What great fun this hobby is! John.

One day I'll get that Blues Brothers 4K disc. I just seem to have so many constantly on the shopping list. Jaws is one of the best though which belies it's anamorphic 35mm origin. Perhaps the quality of the transfer confirms the negative stock used to shoot the film in 1975 was very fine grained. Perhaps also it suggests that a 6K scan is the way forward for full-frame 35mm scans. John.

Wow, Jaws & Close Encounters of The Third Kind! I saw both of them in the theater when I was very young; 7 years old for Jaws and 10 for Close Encounters. Jaws really freaked me out. I learned how to swim in Lake Huron. After seeing Jaws, swimming was a difficult thing for me to do for quite a long time. Recently I decided to spend a sizable amount of cash by purchasing a home theater system that I could easily manage myself. My viewing/sitting area is small. I had been a home theater enthusiast for a long while but over time I drifted away from it. My budget always kept my purchases limited to almost the bare minimums as well. I picked up my first Laser Disc Player (used) from a stereo & A/V shop in Ann Arbor, Michigan back in 1996. It was a pretty basic model: Sony MDP-455. It still works. I no longer use it but I do keep it visible in my entertainment center for the nostalgic effect. Financially I'm doing pretty well now. This is what I purchased: Samsung QN900A 8K 75" TV. Panasonic DP-UB9000 UHD 4K Player. LG SN11RG 7.1.4 Channel High Res Audio Soundbar System. I did a lot of homework before deciding to get these components. I'm not disappointed. I wanted to get the 85" model but it wouldn't fit where I needed it to.

It sounds like you've got a really nice system there Eric so well done. And if you haven't got the Jaws and Close Encounters 4K disc releases then rest assured that they're both pretty fabulous. I consider Jaws to be one of the two best video releases of a 35mm film, the other being Apocalypse Now but I suspect Jaws has the edge. I still run LaserDisc occasionally but I need to get it properly set up again now we've moved. NTSC LaserDiscs were always the poor relation compared to PAL but there are some exceptions out there. Actually, the PAL LaserDisc of Jaws was pretty special now that I think about it. John.

Don't bother doing any technical calibration on your telly Aisback as all you need are your eyes. Play with it, play with it and play with it some more. Never give up fiddling because these 4K discs tend to be different every time and to get the best out of them you'll need to get fairly adept at what to do. The main thing is the brightness of HDR. Most players have it set on full by default and people tend to leave it there. Many discs look so much better with the HDR brightness down. Also, ensure all digital 'enhancements' are either minimized or off because all they do is mess up the picture. 'Sharpen' is the worst offender in this regard. John.

John I could talk Jaws all day long with any fan of the movie. I first saw Jaws when it was shown on UK TV for the first time back in Oct 1981, I was 6 years old and could never thanks my parents enough for exposing me to the movie when they did. As you may recall the streets in the UK were deserted as over 20 million people tuned in to see what all the fuss was about. After almost Two weeks of sleepless nights, I wanted to see the movie again and got my chance the following year whilst on our Holiday to Blackpool, again it scared the hell out of me and I wouldn't walk on the beach lol. As it stands today I've rubbed shoulders with some amazing fans, met and had beers with various people who were involved with the movie Inc Joe Alves and made a friend in Jeff Kramer, watched the movie at the Playhouse on Martha's Vineyard were 80% of the audience were seeing the movie for the first time and that was electric, swam in the waters off the Vineyard where the beach scenes were shot and legitimately acquired production used items from the Murphy's (My friends) on Martha's Vineyard such as Barrels and large screen recognisable sections of the Orca II. All that aside, and I've said it many many times. The most important aspect off all this is having the ability to sit down and just watch the bloody movie in one form or another and as you've pointed out in another brilliant video on your channel here, watching Jaws on the 4K disc is just something else John. By the way, when you mentioned some extra tinkering with the audio I did notice another clang from the bell on the Orca whilst Brody's trapped in the cabin. Not a major thing but I did like it even though my heart will always be with the original Mono Soundtrack.

I put the 4K of Jaws on the other day to ascertain how good The Fifth Element is compared to it and for a 35mm transfer Jaws is in a league of its own. Shows the value of scanning at the equivalent 35mm resolution of 6K I think. I saw Jaws upon original release and again in the 1990s on a really knackered print owned by the British Film Institute and I don't recall either screening looking like this 4K disc. It really is special. I know there would be a successful documentary to be made of fans of Jaws (and another documentary exactly the same for 2001) talking about their love of the film and their first experience. Maybe one day if there's a convention somewhere in the world and we all get together I would get the chance to make it. John.

I saw the BFI print in the 1990s and it was completely knackered but even so, the image didn't look as good as the 4K disc and probably not the Blu-ray either. That's my recollection anyway. It was transferred at 6K and that could be why the end product is so good. Apocalypse Now is just as good and was transferred at 4K but that came from the interpositive and Jaws from the original negative but it all goes to prove that if the master is top-notch then a modern video transfer can be as good as a film. @@BlurayBinge It sounds like the Blu-ray player is not outputting DTS correctly through HDMI so perhaps there's a setting in there for what goes down the HDMI. I'm not enamoured with these HDMI one size fits all players that are being foisted on us now so are there any other outputs from your player? If there's a second HDMI then it's possible to run that into a cheapie converter box to split the outputs and thereby get an optical out but that's something for later if all else fails. My amplifier dates from 1999/2000 so I can't use an HDMI to it anyway but the point is I have an optical output on my player to the optical input of the amp and it all works flawlessly. @@BlurayBinge That's a bit of an oversight by LG. I had something similar on my Optoma projector which I did let Optoma know they'd got wrong and subsequently they updated their literature. They built in a digital pass-through so the sound could go in through the HDMI and then come out via an optical and thereby onto an amplifier. Unfortunately, whoever actually designed and engineered it didn't understand that matrix stereo sound and digital multi-channel sound were two different things and therefore all you could at your amplifier was Dolby Stereo (aka Dolby ProLogic). That is why I had to get a player with an optical out. I did try the HDMI splitter route but with two different splitters I was able to confirm that as soon as an HDMI is split it loses the ability to pass through 4K video. Great review as always! I was lucky enough to see Jaws in a small movie theater back in 1976 at the tender age of 15. Not sure about the exact width, but as far as I'm informed, CinemaScope and most other similar 2x anamorphic formats (including the widely adopted Panavision 2x anamorphic) used the full height of the 35mm image, as opposed to the classic 1.37:1 Academy format, which had a thicker frame line. Splicing the negative of 35mm 2x anamorphic is considered a lost art by now due to the tiny frame line. That's why it's not 2.66:1 or wider, because the image is higher (not just narrower). I am by no means an expert, this is just what I was able to find out. Thanks for reading.

It's actually the introduction of stereo optical tracks that reduced the width of the 35mm image. @@moviecollector5920 thank you for the reply. Yes I know that the soundtracks also had an influence on the exact image format. The print I saw back in 1976 was already slightly worn because it had been run in the big city first and then came to smaller towns. The colors also were a bit muddy like all 1970s prints, but I loved the look. The small movie theater still used carbon arc lamps. Easy to spot because the projectionist had to adjust the distance as the carbon sticks (can't remember the exact term) burned down. The image was very sharp and immersive. Great review. I only wish that you went into more detail on the remastered soundtrack. Which is, IMO, a major disappointment. I wouldn't label it as a remastering, it's more of a reworking. There are several instances throughout the film of missing sound effects or manipulation of sound effects that were not on the original master. Even the so-called original mono soundtrack included on the disc sounds muffled and tampered with. These sound engineers that work on "remasterings" should leave well enough alone. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
@moviecollector59204 жыл бұрын
That is really interesting information Crow. I know the film well and love it but I clearly don't know the soundtrack as well as yourself. If you and I had have had this discussion before I turned the camera on I certainly would have included what you said so maybe I'll be able to mention what you've told me in a future video. I'm hoping to start preparing one today but I am still tied up with a disc release so it will probably take a few days before I can finally get the camera work done and start editing. Thank you very much for such a great comment which is really appreciated from a fellow Jaws enthusiast. By the way, I watched a Norwegian film called 'Kon-Tiki' on Saturday night which is a very good film and has some great shark sequences in it. If you haven't seen that one I recommend it. Two versions of the film are on the Blu-ray because they shot it in English and Norwegian. That in itself is rather special.

Morning Enzo. Sorry I didn't reply yesterday but I was working at a little film collector event. The lens in this video is a Kowa 8Z which was primarily intended for Super 8 film projection but will work with anything. There are loads of 'Scope lenses around and some can be purchased for £20 to £30 these days. The Kowa is a little more sought after though so I would expect one of those to cost at least £100 now. I have a cinema 'Scope lens in my Kinoton FP20 35mm projector which was given to me recently and that's even better than the Kowa. I expect similar items appear on eBay so perhaps that's the place to keep an eye on. But these are film 'Scope lenses and therefore a 2 times squeeze which video doesn't really do unless you have a video projector that will further squeeze the 1.5 times squeeze. Then you'll probably have the problem of the image successfully going through a 2 times 'Scope lens without vignetting at the edges because video projectors tend to have short throw lenses. 'Scope lenses are usually designed for fairly long throws. I hope this all makes some sense. John.

Most of the pre-1982 Super 8 films are fading now so they're not as good as they once were. Low fade film stocks came in around 1982 but there are exceptions and Super 8 releases from Walton here in England seem to have held up best over the years. Jaws is one of my all time favourites and i've bought it 4 times, once on vhs and twice on dvd, but on blu ray it's brilliant because UNIVERSAL had it re-mastered and on the blu-ray it shows the picture before and after and you can tell if you own it on dvd and compare them both. I could have bought jaws, alien, prometheus and alien covenant for £10 each on 4k when bought with another movie at hmv last june but since i was happy with the picture on blu-ray i decided not to bother, great review.

The Blu-ray is excellent. I think it was a 6K scan and that could be the reason why the Blu-ray and 4K both look so exceptional. But the 4K is even better. I don't think it's got any added clarity to the image that I can perceive but the colour and density owing to the addition of HDR makes it look just like a good 35mm print. I don't know how many times I've bought Jaws over the years but with two different cuts on Super 8, a LaserDisc, two copies on DVD and then the 4K I have to conclude that I'm completely nuts! John.

Pretty neat that the super 8mm was in 2:35.1 given most home media into the 90s was 4:3
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
Super 8 was king of home cinema for longer than any other format over the past 50 years. Sadly not many people knew about its success and popularity during the late 80's, 90's and first half of the 2000's when nothing else came close. Video projection finally became viable around 2004/5 but still wasn't as good unless you paid big money. The Super 8 'Scope frame was 2.66:1 though so there was a bit of cropping. I didn't care much because it was the closest thing to cinema in the home that you could get. And being film meant you could get all the daysets, adverts, trailers and everything else required to replicate the local Odeon or ABC. Not something you can do easily with video to this day. John.

Great review, as always. I was really impressed with my JAWS disc. I saw it at the theatre back in the day, and I believe this 4K version looks better. Guessing our little local theatre had a cheap copy (if that was a thing). Did some places get worse generation copies than big city places? Last question, did your 4K come with a 3D lenticular slip cover. Mine has it, and it's pretty cool to look at. I'm also a 3D Bluray fan and the slip cover is really fun!
@moviecollector5920 Жыл бұрын
Morning Dan. Major city centre premiere cinemas got master prints which were struck directly from the camera negative whereas general release prints were struck from the internegative. With the film production process it always goes from negative to positive to negative and so on and so forth. This means the general release prints were three generations down rather than a master print (or 70mm blow-up) which was first generation down from the original. The Jaws disc you have was transferred, if I remember correctly) at 5.6K and this means just about everything from the original 35mm camera negative was captured to be shrunk down to 4K. It appears to make a difference and generally becoming accepted that 6K better represents the computer equivalent capability of full frame 35mm negative. I don't have a lenticular cover on my 4K disc of Jaws. I do recall there were different packaging options in the USA compared to the UK so I suppose there were variations in different markets across the world. John.

James
@moviecollector5920 Жыл бұрын
What an odd problem so suddenly occur James. If it were all discs then it would suggest a laser fault or blockage due to fogging or dirt. I suppose a lens cleaner is the first thing to try anyway but other than that, it's a complete mystery. i'm hazarding an educated guess that you've unplugged it and given it a minute or two before powering up again. I also wonder if there's been a firmware update that's messed things up. If it hasn't had a firmware update then perhaps that's worth a try but it will probably tell you it's already on the latest firmware. I recently attended an open air projection screening of Jaws in a nearby village. It was after dark and positioned at the bottom of a small hill to allow good viewing from any blanket or camping chair. Around 150 attended and the weather was great. My teenage daughter really enjoyed the ambience of the event and the 'retro' look of the projection. I, on the other hard, was mortified by the cropped to roughly 1.85:1 presentation. I politely emailed the organisers the next day, asking for clarification as to whether they were aware or if it was intentional? The reply was that it was intentional to fill the projection screen. Many scenes had characters cut in half or completely cropped out. Knowing how scenes should look, wonderful compositions were completely lost. like a gallery cropping a painting to fit a frame. Would this have bothered you? or would you have been able to look past it? as probably most of the viewers wouldn't have even realised? Thanks.
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
That would have certainly been obvious with Jaws because the scene with the crushing drink can by Quint and then the crushing plastic cup by Hooper has them both at the edges of the screen and cropping to 1.85:1 would mean you'd just about see their noses. It's ridiculous to crop a film but most people simply don't understand film and therefore don't care. To do it to a film like Jaws should be a criminal offence! John.

It really is a terrific transfer Ged but if you already have the Blu-ray you might find there is very little noticeable difference. I put the 4K disc on my television late last night and went to the ferry crossing sequence with the gold/bronze car and it didn't have anywhere near as much impact as when projected. I dare say that if I were to play around with all the settings I'd get it much better but that was my immediate first impression. Perhaps this indicates that the Blu-ray disc is a bargain right now, partcicularly for those who do not have a UHD Blu-ray setup yet.

@moviecollector59204 жыл бұрын
No, because if I have the film on 35mm I'm never going to watch it on anything else. Also, have to be very careful about films on 35mm because up until 15 years or so back I did occaisionally hear of fellow collectors being raided and their 35mm films confiscated. All mine have come from overseas and I have receipts for them so I'd be okay but films that originated here were - and may still be - illegal. That was due to piracy possibilities so given the quality of sell-through video today I suppose it's those laws are either gone or forgotten now but I'm still careful.

I gotta tell ya'; I am incredibly impressed by this video. Not only for what it is, but for the quality itself. You have only made three videos and have this many views and subscribers? Incredibly great job my friend. OK, now to the theater. This is also pretty damn impressive. I have a home theater that I build with my own hands in the middle of a blank space of a basement. However, I have a projector which displays my BluRays, but not an official movie theater reel to reel projector. All that aside, DAMN Jaws is a great movie. I love your content, you have a new subscriber, My Friend. Great stuff. I'll be talkin' to ya'. John Project Ellsworth
@moviecollector59204 жыл бұрын
And you have a new subscriber too @Project Ellsworth. I need to go through more than your latest video but I like your enthusiasm and cheeky style of presentation. Jaws is one of my favourite films but I do seem to have a lot of favourite films. Having been into Super 8 film all my life (well, from the age of two or three anyway) I have quite a long history of home movie collecting. Adding 16mm, 35mm and then video projection (once it got up to a standard that was almost acceptable about 15 years ago) it did make a permanent home cinema even more worthwhile. This particular home theatre had its first presentation in 2000 but was only a shell then. I painted the first proper screen a few weeks later and then started working out how to do it all properly. The curtains, moving masking and lights all got worked out during the following year but I did have problems for years getting everything working as well as it does today. As for the seats, the pair of blue ones were actually manufactured specially for us for our previous [two-seater] home cinema but the red ones came out of a closed down cinema somewhere in south London and only cost about £15 each as I recall. Red seats and red theatrical looking curtains meant I painted the walls red and put red bulbs in the lights. It's more of an old style picture palace than a modern type of cinema. The masking moves simply to enclose the projected image because it's not right having white areas of the screen showing around the top and bottom or left and right and black around the borders does fool the eye into thinking the contrast ratio is higher. Having real (reel?) film means you have all the original frame ratios projected in cinemas through the ages to display and this makes adjustable masking even more essential. Stay tuned because a Terminator retrospective should be next as the 4K 'Dark Fate' is on order from HMV... as is 'Cliffhanger'.

Is it worth to improve with a 4k blu ray player when I don, t have an HDR tv? ( although the tv is 4k ). ?
@moviecollector59203 жыл бұрын
It probably isn't Miguel because our tiny home screens rarely show a perceptible difference in clarity between HD and UHD which means the significant factor is HDR. The solution would be to investigate the possibility of a 4K video projector with HDR and enter a whole new world that breaks away from a fixed box on the sideboard. Any theories on how Spielberg got a PG rating for a movie where a man is graphically bitten in half and spitting up blood? It really didn't take much to get an R rating when it came to violence and gore in 1975. Did Spielberg have an uncle at the MPAA? That would also explain the PG rating for Raiders of the Lost Ark where people's heads literally explode on camera. Scanners certainly didn't get a pass on that type of imagery.
@moviecollector59202 жыл бұрын
I can tell you exactly how an 'A' certificate was achieved because the original trailer tells us at the end of it in a rolling caption. I nearly showed it via my original Super 8 'Scope trailer in this video but didn't want to risk upsetting Universal. As it happens, they got upset with my demonstration of the 'Scope process and claimed this video for their own on that basis. Oh well, lesson learned. Anyway, Jaws was given an 'A' certificate but parents were advised that some scenes may be upsetting for younger members of the audience. Something also about the interest in the film and the book perhaps. If I run the trailer or find the original shots I took for this video I'll write it all down and stick it up here. The basic summary is that the BBFC knew it should be a AA but due to the interest in the film they had given it an A certificate to give younger people the chance to see the film of the book so many had read and loved. I was one of them. John.

I've been wondering the same thing. In fact, I spoke to Keith at Euphoria Pictures (his KZbin channel is worth looking for as he has one of the most amazing collections I know) and we both think there would be little point in 4K if Blu-ray came with HDR. @@moviecollector5920 Back when Blu-rays first came out, I thought to myself, "Why can't they just make DVDs better? It has something to do with a blue laser being able to read tinier dots better than the red kind, I guess. If DVD players have to have larger targets, wouldn't that make the quality better when DVDs are played on a Blu-ray player than a Blu-ray? I guess they are supposed to look better being up scaled, but not as good as a Blu-ray. As you can see, I have so many questions, and probably many more misunderstandings. There are so many questions that I haven't seen hardly anyone ask. And yes, if Blu-rays were given HDR treatment, if they could be given the treatment (I don't know if it's possible or not), 4Ks wouldn't need to exist. In reality, 4Ks aren't truly 4K, because they decided to cheat instead of following the Blu-ray format with 1080p being translated from the pixels going up the screen, these 4Ks are counted going across the screen, so these tvs are basically just a little above 2K, if you're into technical specs. So, it's all a lot of guess work.
@axelvetter3 жыл бұрын
Technically it wouldn't be a problem to fit an HDR picture and the latest sound formats onto a BD but then it wouldn't be a legal BD anymore. It's a standard you can't change as all old BD players couldn't play the new discs. On BD you even cannot store 1080p full HD with 25 or 29,97 frames per second, only 24 fps. The workaround is to use 50 or 59,94 fields. So there won't be HDR on BDs.

@@moviecollector5920 Yeah. I read that the audio was very good. Don't know if I need a calibrator to look at my setup as I've noticed some muddy dialogue on a few discs. It's a pretty good system to be fair. cost me several thousands. Saying that, I wouldn't want it to be detrimental to the sound I have because for 90% of my discs the sound is unrivalled for anything I've ever heard. It blows peoples minds when they hear it too. The issue is rather odd.

@@hazchem1 I had occasional muddy dialogue for the review I did of Batman V Superman a few days ago so it's not entirely unheard of but not something I had with Jaws. It's a couple of years since I watched Jaws for this review video but I can't recall any issues with the sound at all. Having said that, Jaws was originally mono sound so it's possible that if that track is available on the disc it may sound superior to the multi-channel remix. I can't recall which film it was recently but whatever it was the digital multi-channel remix had set the dialogue too low and we therefore switched to the original Dolby Stereo four channel sound which was much better. Comments for that review confirmed the same thing but I don't suppose anyone else would have given it a try if I hadn't have said. I'm increasingly finding examples of the original soundtrack being better than later remixes so just maybe Jaws is another one. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Thankyou for your replies and advice. I'm a bit of a home cinema enthusiast myself. I've been buying and upgrading for nearly 18 years, so it's reassuring to read that you've found some discs that indeed have these issues. It is perhaps just down to different types of hardware and the mix, but it is frustrating when settling down to a movie that the audio just isn't as good as expected. I watched the original Top Gun a few weeks ago and the audio was unbelievable. I was surprised to find at the local CEX that so many copies had been traded in. I'll be watching this again for sure simply because of the sound immersion. Thanks again for the info.

Just flicking back and forth between Jaws 4k and bluray on my Sony A95K. Resolution wise there is zero difference. Colour is better on the bluray? The more I see HDR the more I'm not convinced. Darkens the image and also alters the colour. Bluray upscalled to 4k is the way to go. It's also way cheaper😆

What you're describing there Lborg is the difference between a film and a video. HDR has given film makers the ability to reproduce the superior colour and density of film on a sell-through video. If it doesn't look better on your system then it's the setup so keep playing until you get it sorted. But beware, it can take an awful lot of tinkering. Until the advent of HDR, we had to put up with video that was taken from low contrast prints and later on, cine to video transfers that were falsely brightened up so that it would be acceptable on tellies. Those days are now over and it's possible to get a film like experience at home, particularly if you have 4K video projection. Good luck in getting everything looking more to your liking. John.
