I grew up in the small town where Tom Hanks and his wife live and there it’s common knowledge that they’re not very nice people. There was a substantial lawsuit brought against the couple who refused to pay the contractors who had done a massive remodel on their home. They had been difficult and demanding clients, changing their minds after work had begun, and as a result, the building costs were much higher than initially expected. But when it came time to foot the bill, the Hanks refused to pay. The incident went to court in the mid 2000’s when I happened to be the baby-sitter for one of the prosecuting lawyers. The lawyers representing the contractors all went out to celebrate their victory after the long and highly contentious case, and as usual, I had been babysitting- but that night I was tipped more generously than I ever had been in my life!

Hello I have been going to sea since 1982 Richard Phillips is the most hated Captain I have ever heard of. Every person I know that sailed with him hated him every one. On that voyage he did not go around the pirate waters but sailed right through it. This lets him save fuel by following a shorter path and be able to go slower yet still arrive on time. Makes him look better then the other ships captains working for Maersk. That is what the law suite is over. If a crew member so much as uses a wire wheel without eye protection he is fired on the spot, but its ok for the captain to disregard all safety rules.

There is an 60's to 70's classic Greek movie with a very similar plot. A shipping company needs to send a large cargo to a foreign country but due to bad weather the shipping departure is slightly delayed. This could mean a large financial loss for the company but not all hope is lost. There are a few days before the deadline expires and the weather is good, however the distance is too far to reach in the remaining days left. It's too late. That being said, the owner hatched a plan to set sail in the pretence of going to the port but without a time limit. However, long after reaching deep sea waters the captain orders to increase the pressure of the steam engine to increase the speed of the boat. Initially, all went fine but due to the extended period that this was happening and the orders of the captain to put *even more* coal, the engine explodes and all the crew, besides one lucky guy, died. The boat sunk and, although there were people that managed to survive the explosion, they succumbed to their injuries and eventually died as well. One of the crew members who was present, before dying, told the survivor that he heard the one monitoring the pressure yell "No more coal! No more coal!" before the explosion and gave him a telegram, from his friend in the communication station, which the captain recieved from the owner ordering him to increase the coal input to increase the speed with a quick but detailed description of the reason that was happening and the rewards if he pulls it off. The results were mentioned earlier but the survivor returned back safe and sound and decided to file a lawsuit against the company. The company did it's very best to cover everything up and beaten up the survivor to keep his mouth shut but when the trial happened the irrefutable evidence, the survivor presented, lead to the shut down of the company, with a lot of money in debt to the families of the deceased and the eventual cardiac arrest of the owner from this incident whom nobody else but his family cried for. The phrase "No more coal! No more coal!" is very famous and most people have, at least, heard of it.

I did costume coordination on a film and it is huge deal to make sure none of the extras are wearing LOGO tees. So, if you get a friend to wear a Brain Blaze Tee in the crowd scene you can technically sue the film company for usage rights. The film company would probably cough up some undisclosed product placement use fee and it would never go to court, hence no lawsuit.

But in the fight against liability for their actions, companies like McDonald's spent an insane amount of money on PR campaigns and lobbying the media to create the impression that frivolous lawsuits are a problem. The result is that it gets harder and harder to win real lawsuits while the public believes it's getting easier.

My uncle was a merchant marine in the late 90s and the 2000s. He would tell us stories about pirates. One of the things they would do is have buckets full of hardened cement along the edges if the boat. When pirates would pull up next to the ship trying to board they would shove them off and watch them destroy the boat below. The most graphic situation he ever witnessed with pirates was when his ship was pulling double duty transporting Navy seals around Africa.....it didn't end well

FYI Captain Philips also tours as an inspirational speaker, I met him when he spoke at my university. He seemed nice enough but of course his version of events was pretty different from his crew's version. Im struggling to remember but I'm almost entirely certain it was more in line with the movie. Definitely gotta look up the crew's version in more detail because holt shit man
