Ke Huy Quuan is a beautiful story. And it all happened because of Jackie Chan. Not because he was friends with Jackie Chan, or anything. But Everything everywhere all at once was written specifically for Jackie Chan. But Chan turned down the role, because he was retired from doing action. So the Daniels re-worked the script, and reversed the roles of the husband and wife, and made Michelle Yeoh the lead instead. And that created the opportunity for Ke Huy.

Unfortunately, when a movie flops, it is the actors who get the blame, but it is much more common to have been the script or the director.

@@joeybaseball7352 actor doesn't always get the praise or credit if your director is Stanley kubrick, james Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, martin Scorsese. It totally depends on the time given and efforts invested. Both have to be great at that. Even Netflix and Disney have decided to cut all of their major projects to release at once as soon as they learnt how their greed is destroying the creativity.

I recall Natalie Portman once mentioned that people didn't want to hire her as much after Phantom Menace. It wasn't until Mike Nichols stepped in on her behalf and vouched for her that people started casting her more.

Lindsay is the perfect example of this. If she hadn't done all that drinking and partying, she would've been Emma Stone. In fact, Emma Stone has Lindsay to thank for her career. The movies Easy A, and Superbad were written specifically for Lindsay. But she was uninsurable. So they went with Emma Stone instead. In an alternate timeline, it's Lindsay Lohan with the 2 oscars.

People are overhyping her because she showed will to get her life in order and people are rooting for her. but the problem with Lindsay is she plays herself all the time. She doesnt have range. She relied on her sex appeal a lot too instead of actually diminishing her sex appeal to produce a performance. She should try what Tom Cruise did in Tropic Thunder to see if she has what it takes . You know a role where she is detached from herself.

What’s sad about some of these is that acting at the end of the day is still a job, and if that’s your source of income you don’t have the option of always waiting for the perfect screenplay to come along. Losing your career due to being in a bad film is not the same as losing you’re career because you are a bad actor, and bad directors and screenwriters almost never seem to take hit to their careers as quickly or as severely as actors do. Also these stories are known only because these actors got big enough for people care; there are probably hundreds of similar stories we know nothing about. The main take away is that Hollywood generally is a pretty terrible place to work in.

In a lot of cases, the actor themselves put on a good performance but factors outside of their control end up impacting them. I think Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins both do a good job in John Carter - a personal favorite - and neither of them were the issue with the movie. In fact, the movie is a really good time. But because of how much money was put into it, and how it did, it cast a shadow over their career. Andrew Stanton, the director, was in purgatory for a while before Finding Dory made a billion, though he's mostly been doing creative work since then. I'd say directors do take a hit to their career if the movie loses a lot of money. Writers are the ones that seem to be mostly immune, though it might be because their job ends sooner than others. There are countless uncovered actors in this video. And even those are the lucky ones - there's probably an order of magnitude more that tried to get into the position of acting at all but were unable to.

I would say that with directors, if you've had one major hit you can ride that wave for quite a few flops. Take a film like The Sixth Sense, I doubt Samalyan would have gotten nearly the number of chances and the budgets he still had to work with if that film had not been as big as it was. Showgirls might have been a flop but Vorhoven is still working. Actors are treated as if they should be able to turn crap into gold.

It's pretty telling that about the only star that went on to have a phenomenal movie career from acting in a Star Wars film is Harrison Ford. Alec Guinness, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, and a few others already had important roles prior to Star Wars while Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Hayden Christensen, and others didn't really go on to become movie stars.

George Lucas can write dialogue, is just not the dialogue that you wait from any other film, he has his own style, might not be the best, but it works within the Star Wars universe, considering all the terms and names (he helped in the latino/mexican dub, really good actually), any of them have become iconic (just look at the memes), some are even beautiful, take Yoda, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Dooku and Palpatine's lines, there are wise messages there, even Anakin's lines aren't that bad, I think Hayden acted better in Episode 3. George Lucas might not be the best director of actors, he's rather a more visual man who prefers action over words.

Not to mention that he more or less single handedly outlined what is possibly the most well known and beloved story of the past three generations and counting. I think that he's amazing when it comes to the broad strokes. I would love to have read a novel of his,had he ever written one. But I do think that the dialogue he writes for his characters is stilted and unnatural sounding, and that he would've done well to have someone make another pass at the scripts he's written. Just to punch up characters' lines a little bit. And while he can't get a good performance even out of actors who are proven to be great at their craft,it's okay cuz he doesn't HAVE to be a great director OR a great screenwriter. He clearly has no shortage of skill where it counts the most. I just would've liked to have seen a prequel trilogy with different directors for the second and third installments like the original trilogy had,as well as a script doctor to revise some of the dialog. After all...no man is an island,as they say.

A good example of a similar situation, but in the music industry, is what happened to Janet Jackson after nipple-gate. Her career was ruined by conservatives for an action perpetrated by Justin Timberlake, who’s career wasn’t affected. Only recently have people started realizing that he was an a-hole all along

While I don't think it's fair to give her 100% of the blame for that incident, it's ridiculous to pretend that she wasn't somewhat responsible. She knew what she was doing. And yes, Timberlake should have got more of the blame then he did too, but it's not like he was the only one responsible. And criticism came from just about everybody (except for people who just didn't care), not just one side of the political aisle.

The supply of talented actors, directors, writers, etc. will always exceed the available jobs, so it isn’t surprising that rising actors can wreck their careers. But it is surprising when actors with a solid track record of success can’t find work. But even going back to the 1930’s and 1940’s the saying was “You’re only as big as your last box office.” :"Box office jail” is just an update of “box office poison.” Katharine Hepburn is a famous example of a “box office poison” star who made a major comeback.

I think for RDJ you forgot to mention the role that really put him back on the map. It was his TV role in Ally McBeal where he was really back on form and got critical praise to the point studios were clamoring to bring him back for roles. That where his comeback really began

I agree with a lot what you are saying, but as far as actors go, i don't agree with that a big named actor can always get anyway with a bad movie. An unknown actor, gets away with a lot more if the movie is a flop, because no one has ever heard of them. He can make multiple flops, and than one day get that bit hit movie that's an instant success. A well known actor however, there are certain expectations that the audience already has for them. The fans of those actors know there acting capabilities and expect them to act just as well, if not better, in the next movie. If anything, it hits much harder when a movie flops for a big named actor, just because those expectations were so high. And yes....some of those movies that big named actors have stared in, bombed so badly, that it ruined there entire career.

Roles for Asian American actors were severely limited and it's really been over the last 5-10 years that things have really begun to change. Blaming racism is cheap. The list of child actors who don’t continue to get roles is long. But, it must be racism. Jfc. BD Wong has been working consistently since the early 90s. Ken Leung for the last 30. Randall Park the last 20. Rex Lee the past 20. Masi Oka since the early aughts. Jason Scott Lee since the late 80s. Brandon Lee was a rising action star. Aaron Yoo since the early aughts. John Cho since the late 90s. Kenneth Choi since late 80s.

Good job. I read on the internet that John Carter has become something of a small cult film and gave it a go. It is in fact better than it appeared when it came out. It seems Disney really messed up the marketing (starting with a terrible title, John Carter of Mars, or Princess of Mars would probably been better). Anyway Taylor Kitch was not the problem. Poor guy has been treated too harshly for some reason. Especially after such good work in Friday Night Lights.

In 2012, Taylor Kitsch's career was affected by 3 failures at the box office: John Carter, Battleship and Savages. If any of them were a success, maybe he'd get another chance to greatness. So many good things to say about all these actors honestly. Acting really seems like a tough gig in my opinion. Like nobody stays on top forever, everyone has some sort of bad movie that caused them to question why they do this. (except Taylor Lautner) I really don't enjoy him in anything except the smashing classic The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl. Where he displays an amazing martial arts display at such a young age.

John Carter was so unfairly treated by Disney. You watch any of the trailers, and you can tell that none of the marketing team cared about this film. Disney could have had a multi-billion dollar franchise that could be releasing annually to this day, similar to Harry Potter for Warner Brothers. Instead, they blew it on Disney+ Star Wars instead. Either way, both Kitsch and Collins are incredibly talented, and I'm glad they're still acting in some form or another to this day.

Soon after, he did his club-required "ritual humiliation" in drag, in the Bosom Buddies sitcom. Plus, he's a Jeffrey Epstein sanctioned _pre - dator of traf - ficked younglings._ Something his Bosom costar, Peter Scolari, wasn't willing to become. Scolari remained a small screen TV sitcom prisoner, with a slightly lighter stained soul, to his death. But your sarcasm aside, we all know the _Silver Screen Hollywood Legend_ known as Tom Hanks. We just don't know _everything_ he did to become that.

Careers ebb & flow - both most of these examples are actors who starred in either big franchises or tv shows - it takes a while for an audience to see them as another leading character & allow themselves to be emersed in a new production they're starring in. That said Taylor Lautner was the Rupert Grint of Twilight.

That's fair though, I think, there is a turning point - ill-defined, to be sure, but perhaps perceptible - where one can say that a career is on a downturn and not in the middle of change. Ridley Scott is a good example - he has a few hits, a few flops, a few more hits, a few more flops, but always manages to turn it around within years. Some are unable to turn it around to that degree.

I would agree, though the prevailing sentiment seems to be that doing both - theatrical followed by streaming - is the best of both worlds. You get to recoup most of the costs + word of mouth helps boost it on streaming.

I love this video enough to comment that the text on screen that is fast and rapid is distracting from your words. I can’t pay attention to both, and before you’ve even set the video up I am looking and seeing talking points in these texts showing up, then I’m rewinding, then rewinding, then reading, then rewinding. Very uncomfortable for the first minuet of the video, I’m only at 1:08 and excited to see more, but I might have to just stop watching the actual video component to hear what YOU’RE saying. Structure in a video like this is super important

Thanks for the constructive criticism. This is something I need to get better at. I read a lot so all I often need to do is scan a text and I usually get it. But someone else brought it up and I think it's gotten better on the last couple of videos or so - but still plenty of room for improvement.

I’ve always like Cara Delvigne, I think she’s an incredibly interesting person and has more skill acting that she gets credit for. I also have a soft spot for Valerian and the City of 1000 planets, my ex and I really loved it and that’s one of the last positive memories I have of our relationship. It’s such a fun movie and RHIANNA PLAYS A SHAPE SHIFTING ALIEN. It’s going to be a cult classic, I bet it’ll be compared to The Fifth Element in another decade or so.

I'm glad to find someone who also liked Valerian. I saw it in theaters and had a blast, and it's one of those movies I return to every so often. I wish the movie had done better, and I hope that she - and Dane DeHaan - are able to get more roles going forward. She has promise as an actress, but needs the right role. I'm happy to hear that it's a positive memory for you. It's one of the wonderful aspects about movies: specific movies at specific times - whatever those times are - can linger with us our whole lives.

Gibson is directing his next film, Flight Risk, which should be coming out next year. But what I want him to get started on is the next Lethal Weapon movie. There were rumors he'd direct it and that Danny Glover would be back. It's still the best buddy cop movie ever made.

John Carter was a pretty solid film. The backstory is well known the studio had shenanigans in not wanting it to succeed too much and was poorly marketed. And spending so much money on a film about books made 100 years ago had way more to do with its failure than anything on screen. I really have not seen much in audience reaction saying the leads were terrible. How the leads to this movie got the brunt of the fallout really was not fair to them at all. They had nothing to do with the budget or marketing and were relative newcomers. It smacks of Hollywood wanting a scapegoat that was "not them"

Hollywood is a relationship business, and Kathleen Kennedy has built those relations since she started producing for Spielberg in the 80s. A lot of it is probably carryover from past successes and the hope that she'll be able to recreate it on the new ones. But the budgets are so large, that unless the movies have good word of mouth (which they don't, considering the billion dollar dropoff between Force Awakens and TROS), it'll be impossible for them to be successful at the box office. So 2 choices remain for Lucasfilm: 1. Make better movies. 2. Reduce the budget by at least $100M+ (Solo cost $300M, TROS was $400M)
