Thanks so much for this! This year has been pretty rough so far (my mom was diagnosed with a rare form of a late stage cancer suddenly, at 58) and it’s been extremely stressful to basically have her future be Schrödinger’s Cat. She may somehow beat this with new aggressive treatments. But she could be dead by our birthdays in three months. So trying to do legacy stuff, but not freak out, find a good few days to look for wedding dresses (I’m single, but she hopes I’ll find someone like she did, so I can have a true love story situation too, and “there’s no rule that says you can’t look early.”). It’s hard to try to balance such different futures. To not freak out that we can maybe only read two more books. To make videos for my kids so they can have an approximation of what she’s like. Videos for our wedding days, consolation if something horrible happens, for when Dad dies. It’s so weird to be planning but hoping. Humor has been really important in the midst of all of this. There’s not a single person in my immediate family who has the blessing of having good health, and for most of us stress can cause flares or relapses. Thank you for the humor, for humor of something so loved and familiar to boot. It’a important to have time to just enjoy the silly things, the ironic things, the absurd, and it can be hard in times like these. So thanks for doing what you do. It’s very much appreciated. Love you, muffin!

Your grandma sneak up on you too? I remember one New Years at like 2 AM when I was like 16 or 17 my Mom was sleeping on the couch, and I decided to turn down the volume and watch "Family Guy." My family is super strict and "Family Guy" was still relatively new at the time so I was still feeling it out while knowing I'd probably get screamed at for watching it. I've been screamed at for less. So I'm sitting in front of the TV, when Grandma comes barrelling out of the bedroom with "YOU SHOULD BE IN BED!" scaring the shit out of me. I jumped about a foot in the air like a pussy and started flipping channels like a maniac. Then Grandma came out of the bathroom, got down low in my sleeping Mom's face, and screamed "IT'S BEDTIME!" Yeah rest in peace and all that but Grandma was flakier than a cereal aisle.

It's good to know that Kyle Katarn hasn't been forgotten. I've always really liked his character, especially in contrast to Luke in a polar opposites kind of way. I hesitate to say that Kyle was basically how you could imagine a more Han Solo-esque Jedi because I feel that does a disservice to both characters, but I always liked Kyle's more informal demeanor and lack of pretense. Luke is a more traditional but compassionate leader and mentor who doesn't see himself as above anyone, but Kyle kind of takes that a bit further in a way that makes him equally likeable. He doesn't insist on titles and in fact seems to be not too fond of them as I get the sense it weirds him out a bit, which I can relate to as well. His struggle with the Force and eventual mastery over both it and himself is compelling and I think in some ways this makes him a bit more of an everyman in the sense that he has been met with strife the way real people do and in the end he has made it through so much, including his personal demons. While that's not to say that Luke isn't relatable and didn't have struggles all his own, it's just that to me at least, the way Kyle goes about his own trials and tribulations have more moments of stumbling and falling off the path so to speak along the way, as do we all in one manner or another. Of all the characters and adventures that have been mostly dismantled as no longer cannon, Kyle is one of those said characters that I bemoan the most. Disney did themselves a great disservice by doing away with the extended lore because those were practically potential movie scripts for what would've been great for movies, but I digress. At least there are those who can still remember and appreciate that which the extended works of many talented creators has brought us. Although it may seem strange or even borderline blasphemy of me to use this quote, I do feel it holds up in regards to the infinitely superior works that came before Disney's force-choking grip on the franchise, "Nothing's ever truly gone."
