What's most chilling about this film it's not the typical giant UFO that visits earth packed with aliens. This hypothetical alien life is something that is undetected really. It's more believable to me that alien life would come to earth this way.

One of the best film openings ever. It feels so real, so alien. CGI these days doesn't have the same sharpness and distinction that practical effects did back then. CGI (when it noticeably CGI) just looks bland and monotonous and makes me feel so outside of the film. This sequence draws me in.

Pure cosmic horror. These opening scenes are a tribute and recognition to the cosmic horror of H. P. Lovecraft and his many-times plagiarized creatures. Just as Carpenter's The '82 Thing is a recognition of Lovecraft's work "In the Mountains of Madness," so said by Carpenter himself, this remake of Kaufman is also a recognition of Lovecraft's mythology. It could be said that Jack Finney was inspired by the "Mi-go", beings that were fungi, that is to say, between the animal and the vegetable and that obviously reproduce by spores. The Mi-go could control humans since they could perform brain surgery and also introduce other organs to be able to communicate with other humans. Another inspiration for Finney was "The Ancients", since their anatomy is the same as plants and animals and they reproduce by spores or bipartition.

A bit of consolation for you folks who worry about the nihilistic ending of this film and the final fate of humanity. The 1978 Jack Finney novelization of this film (adapted from his original work) has quite a different ending. Hard to say more without spoilers, but it is beautiful and melancholy at the same time. Well worth a read.

The Pulse - Pounding Precision of a Paranoid "Pod"- Cast. ... Who are the unemotional, somnambulant drones who spitefully denied this absolutely top-drawer "Me Decade" redo of at least a paltry smattering of "Oscar" nods? I am well aware that genre pictures, let alone remakes, tend to get short shrift from the cantankerous, white-haired cruds within the Academy but this little Sci'-Fi' '70's sizzler was clearly deserving of some "Above the Line" nominational love. Not to mention Chapman's coldly-clinical off-kilter San Fran' lensing and Zeitlin's memorably offbeat One-Off incidental scoring. Whenever I put scissors to paper, I am always reminded of a stylishly primped, Disco' era Sutherland's "Matthew Bennell" and the remaining balance of that fabulously real leading-four ensemble. From the most excellent secondary cast, an Art Hindle Genetic Duplication Trimester Trifecta would be completed with the busted NBC pilot "The Clone Master", also from '78, then Cronenberg's chilling child-custody manifesto "The Brood" as the placenta-ripping Midnight Finale. Every -"Body" Needs Some - "Body" Sometimes...

From an article on Indiewire, “Somewhere between 1968’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and 1977’s “Star Wars,” something happened in the culture. Storytellers, perhaps inspired by the fizzling out of the hippie counter-culture, the still-dragging-on war in Vietnam and post-Watergate disillusionment, began to look at the future in a somewhat darker, more idiosyncratic way than had been the case before, shifting focus to recurring themes of environmental disaster, utopias gone sour, and the end of all things.”

@@hexus9198 Yeah, maybe they felt we were ready for this kind of ending now.
