Moving a modern wonder like Allure of the Seas through the ocean takes a lot of power. See how the complex combination of six engines provides 135,000 horsepower and a smooth ride for guests onboard.

I toured the engine room of one of the smaller RCL ships and it was amazing! Bunker oil had to be heated prior to use to thin it out. So clean these engine rooms. Engines are taken out of service while underway and completely rebuilt by a special crew when needed. Amazing operation. My thanks to RCL for the tour.

Cheif Engineer is Norwegian, you see that in his name and in the poor english. On the seven seas there is A LOT of Norwegian Officers, thats because we are a quite good kind of people for that job, and it its in our DNA to be at sea. And the Royal Caribbean is partly Norwegian cause there was a Norwegian in the main founder. And The Norwegian Cruise Line is Norwegian was Norwegian, but it was founded in USA and owned by Americans. Same goes for Carnival Cruise Line.

@Des Thompson In this case redundant is the correct term. It applies to the fact that there are 'back ups' built into the ship As he says 4 engines could completely fail and the ship could still return to port In doing this they make the ship the safest place to be so if there is causalty to the vessel it can return to port instead of having abandoning ship.

***** With background as a Naval Architect / Marine Engineer and Chief Engineer, redundancy is the term used in the industry, and it's been the saving grace of our operations many times over.
@thebunnisher109

You are right I was not trained specifically in linguistics, but do not have to be in this case. Per Merriam-Webster: "A part in a machine, system, etc., that has the same function as another part and that exists so that the entire machine, system, etc., will not fail if the main part fails". Likewise, the industry term is redundancy and it applies to the multitude of ever-present ways to accomplish the same task. There are fail-safes in every regard. I've run a ship with half of my ten engines operational, broken propulsion control system, loss of mechanical lube oil and controllable-pitch pressure, no shaft brakes, and a flooded machinery space.The ONLY way we were able to continue operating was by virtue of redundant systems. At least two of everything onboard, with multiple variations of each.

***** redundancy in engineering means backup. The term is used in computing also. It does not necessarily mean a system lays there unused just in case. The whole lot can be used and if one fails the other can cope. You see it in ships engines, boiler in large buildings, computers that run companies, etc.

So it is diesel-electric drive. The props are turned by electric motors?
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 9 жыл бұрын
Thomas Nixon The diesel engines turn only generators. Three swivelling Azimuth props with electric motors drive the ship. Azimuth can increase efficiency by 25%. The Queen Mary 2 has also two gas turbine engines under the funnel in soundproof rooms to generate power, along with three diesel engines down below. Diesel engines are old hat in marine technology. A number of Swedish, French and Japanese submarines have Stirling engines that are very quiet near vibration free, being far more energy efficient than diesels. Stirlings are external combustion which means they are far cleaner in emissions. Far cleaner natural gas can be used as the fuel to eliminate dirty diesel. Stirlings are ideal for ships as they need lots of cooling and sea water gives that. Air conditioning chillers can be absorption, which only needs heat to operate, supplemented by smaller motorized chillers. Waste heat can be used to cool and heat the ship. I have no idea why Stirling engines are not upscaled and used in ships. Ships have a long way to go yet for greater efficiency. The fact is the technology is here to greatly improve matters and has been for a long time.
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 8 жыл бұрын
***** It is "very" fuel efficient. The diesel engines are designed for maximum efficiency running at a constant speed. Engine efficiency is guaranteed no matter what speed the ship is moving. The Azimuth (azipods) gives maximum manoeuvrability, which direct drive cannot give.
@paullangford8179
@paullangford8179 8 жыл бұрын
+JP JP You only need to run enough engine to give the speed you want. So quite often there are diesel-generator sets not running, which increases the efficiency. At large scales, conversion efficiency is pretty good as well, comparable to gearbox losses. Also, the azipod propellors are perfectly aligned to the direction of travel, where shaft driven propellors are quite often at an angle.
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 8 жыл бұрын
Paul Langford Also Azimuth propellers have full flow across them. There is no Hull in the way of the water flow path. This is adds efficiency. Having a number of generator engines means they can be banked and sequenced in or out to demand. Again adding efficiency. Wankel engines are efficient running at a constant speed and one third of the power and weight of a diesel. They are also very smooth. Upsize a Wankel (they scale up no problem) having them as gensets and they can replace dirty diesels in cruise ships where smoothness and space saving is highly desirable. Rotaries run on LPG very nicely. Many cruise ships are turning over to LPG. Stirlings are very efficient but large and heavy. This is where Wankles score well in ship applications. Small in physical size banked Wankles as gensets can be swapped out, complete with genny, and in a matter of hours on a scheduled maintenance on a port stop, to be reconned ashore, eliminating large engine overhauls in dock which takes up revenue earning time. The rotary gensets can all be in a frame and each one fixed to skids to slide in and out. One out and a recon set in, within a few hours.
@paullangford8179
@paullangford8179 8 жыл бұрын
+John Burns Unfortunately, no Wankel motor comes anywhere near the efficiency of diesel. The big turbocharged two-strokes on ships quite often get better than 50 % thermodynamic efficiency, running on fuel like oily custard. No Wankel gets anywhere near this, apart from theoretical, "works by magic and wishful thinking" versions that don't actually exist.

+Jasper Paguio Cruise ships have always been capable of transoceanic voyages. But due to them being wider and boxier than dedicated ocean liners, they're not as streamlined, and therefore not as efficient as cutting through the water at higher speeds.

CSX is a Rail Road and shipping company here in the US. You can probably find the commercial i'm referring too here on youtube if you look for it. And yeah, i know what you were talking about lol, just thought i would chime in. You know i read somewhere that the QM2 gets something like 6 inches to the gallon?
@stevevater8598
@stevevater8598 7 жыл бұрын
The comparison to mpg is misleading the QM2 weighs 98000 ton + a car weighs 1.5 tons ,that's 65333 cars. Average fuel consumption in real work 42mpg.if you then devise the no of car available mpg and see how far the travel per gallon its 0.377 ft which means the QM 2 is does more . !!

Actually, big ships are very fuel efficient. Pound for pound, they're far more efficient than much smaller boats. Look up the economics of scale. It says that the more weight you can carry with one boat (or train), the more efficient per pound it is. This is why you see CSX commercials that state they can move one ton of freight 100 miles on one gallon (because it's big and powerful enough to do so).

@carmelpule6954
@carmelpule6954 7 жыл бұрын
He did mean redundant systems. The benefits of having diesel electric propulsion is that one can have many smaller engines powering electric alternators which are all fed to the switchboard, this will not only provide reliability but what one calls redundant systems as if a few engines stop there will be enough left sail the ship to port. Most aircraft and sea vessels have redundant system designed in them these days.
