Sailing Soulianis

6 жыл бұрын

The Tartan 37 is ours, and it’s time to celebrate! With the 4th of July arriving just days after we close on the boat, we decide it’s rather fitting to pop some bubbly and celebrate our own new-found freedom… from land!
The hardest part of moving aboard is figuring out where to put our stuff. Fortunately we had already done most of our downsizing when we left California a half year prior. We learn how to cook on our alcohol stove and adjust to our “front door” raising and lowering 3 feet depending on the height of the river. Being connected to shore power makes it feel more like we’re living in a teeny tiny apartment with misshapen cabinet spaces.
After a week of living on our sailboat, we start to settle in. We figure out where our new workspaces are (the salon table, the chart table) and get most of our stuff stowed away. And, we discover the local liquor store is only a 5-minute walk across the drawbridge. Score.
Hope you enjoy!

Sailing Soulianis Hard to tell what I miss when I don't know I miss it. :) I've watched so many sailing channels and I'm watching such channels for the sailing and most of them shifted from sailing channles to travel blogs/journals. It's good to see how beautiful places you visit, but after awhile it gets boring for me, always the beautiful, nothing to be in contrast with it. So if you can keep a good balance between the sailing-boatlife-travel blogging I'll be here for a long time with you. :) I would really like to know anything and everything is to know about the whole boatlife, how to get there, how to live it, maintenance of the boat and stuff and anything with sailing in it. But I get it it could be really boring for most of the ppl. And I'm sure you may want to make money from this as well and you'll need audience for that, so you have to go for the more (or most) popular topics. Anyway, I like your way of approach, to work on the journey and maintain a real life on the water and on the go. So you are already unique in the crowd of sailing channels for me. :) I think ppl can connect with you if they feel they can do this too. If you buy a $500K boat and travel the world, ppl see that as you are too rich and they will loose interest after too much beauty and fun. But if they see you work too, you don't have all the money on Earth for the boat, but you had to work for it, you do the "floating house" maintenance yourself as most of us do at our homes, they'll feel much more close to you and follow your life. Yes, we need the beauty, we need the fun to be a bit jealous and curious what will you do next, but we need to see you as real ppl, to be able to believe it's real what you record, not just acted scenes. Anyway, I like your style myself, so if you keep this, I'll keep up with you. :)

the Battens are for the main sail, they act like the aluminium rods in school back-packs, they stabilise the shape ( aerofoil), makes trimming them easier, ie: most of the shape stays in the sail, you don't have to manipulate the controls to get all the shape, some is 'included' for you! shape, like in a planes wing is what gives lift ( drive in boats case) and is what moves you along, Other than in a storm, you WANT a curve in the sail, both directions, ie from the top->down and front-> aft, in a storm, you "flatten" sail, in other words take the shape out, cutting the power of the rig to manage high wind conditions, like putting the choke on a mower/ grass cutter engine.

If I can leave you with one thing, it is this: Learn to use the signal mirror that you have in your hand at 1:26. Other than your radio, that mirror, in skilled hands, is the best day-time signaling device you have on your boat. As an attack jet aviator, I could see mirror flashes from Forward Air Controllers miles away. I could then guide on the signal mirror flash until the ground guys could use something else to communicate with me. I was always impressed just how great the mirror is as a tool to get someone's attention miles away. It is not tricky to use, but it does require some practice. I'd make sure every personal flotation device on your boat has one attached. Great boat. Have fun. Be safe. Been there; done that...too old to do it again. I'm envious of your upcoming adventures and the experiences waiting for you just around the corner.

Sure is a powerful tool. Interesting to hear so from someone who’s attention it’s supposed to attract. Thanks so much for your comment, William.

I like seeing the everyday things of life. I hope you never just try to entertain me with boaty stuff. I love the fast time lapse. I forget your names. But, I really already have a lot of fatherly affection for the girl

Just throwing in a hello from Perth Australia - we've bought a 28ft monohull as a "learner" and are coming to similar conclusions of cat vs mono vs fixer upper vs finished for our "big boat". Best wishes and sray safe🍻🍻

Awesome, the company I work for (Modine) is based in Racine, it was cool to see a little bit of the town in your video. Congrats on the new boat!
