I spent a month in England when my kid was six years old. He spent most of the time playing with a boy named Peter, also six years old, who only spoke English, and when we went home to Denmark, my son didn't need me to translate for him anymore, when we were watching cartoons in English. Five years later, when he was supposed to learn English in school, the teacher had to place him separately with a Canadian girl from his class, because they both already spoke English fluently and were so bored with the teachings that they sabotaged the English lessons. I am not saying that he learned English in a month, but he did the groundwork that made it possible for him to learn a lot more all by himself, watching American cartoons, and occasionally asking me a question.

I am amused that the pendant on that necklace is almost exactly the pendant my first love who happened to be a Danish exchange student gave me when I was very young. 😊 I lived in Denmark, it’s a wonderful place to live.

I love your post today. This pose is not just applying to your kids. It also applies to people who do not speak Danish and move to this country with their Danish partner. Learning Danish from scratch is hard but having a support system around you (Family, neighborhood & community) is so important. But kids pick up things very fast.

I consider your video very clear and useful. Thank you for that🙏🏼 we currently live in Iceland, planning to move to Denmark when kids gonna be 2/3 and 5/6. The only thing I was missing here is the economical side of the movement with kids :)

Second comment: children are so flexible in learning languages and they don’t understand half of what adults say in their own language so it usually doesn’t even register as a big problem to them once they have a basic understanding.

Your native language you MUST speak it at home for the kid to learn it. When in school or kindergarten kids will learn Danish easily. When the kids learn 2 or 3 languages at a time, they may learn it a bit more slowly, but that's no problem.

Thanks for sharing your experiances with us Kelly. I think sometimes parents make moving a much bigger issue than need be. Kids are much more resiliant than they're given credit for. That being said, there are of course examples of the opposite too. I was 2 yrs ild when we moved to L.I., N.Y. I suffered a cultureshock as my folks put it. understood Danish (spoken in the house), but stopped speaking it... I would answer in English. One Summer when we were in Denmark on vacation, I was out in the summerhouse with my grandparents in order to get med to speak Danish. 1 week was what it took. Anyway, thanks again for your posting!

Mange Tak - for sharing. :) I would imagine that your boys will do very well in school, particularly with their mandatory English courses. Until I was about 5 years old, Danish was the only language that I could speak. As a result, my public school teacher wrote a letter to my parents and advised them to speak strictly English to me at home. They did that, and it helped with my education. However, by doing this I eventually lost my fluency in the Danish language. At this point in my life, I am the most comfortable speaking English, and my knowledge of the Danish language is quite basic. Cheers!

In the daycare the adults are deliberately very focused on speaking Danish.

My father was Danish and I forgot about the other titles because I was only 4 years old when they stayed with us in NJ. They went back to Denmark, but my Bedstemor wanted to stay in the US.
