I love how you easily explain things, Paul. I came looking for advice on moving climbing roses, (In the future-- not now, as i've JUST started my rose exploration. :) ) I wanted to see if climbing roses were POSSIBLE to move. When you said that bit about when you buy them bareroot, this process really is no different. That really struck me and made me feel more confident that if/when I move and want to take my favorite roses with me, I CAN DO IT! Thanks again Paul. I love the videos you did for Jackson & Perkins so I'm happy to find this little treasure trove of fun, too! I really appreciate you sharing all of your knowledge in an EASY to understand manner.

I have a rose that I started from a cutting of a rambler rose in an old mansion in town, probably from early part of last century. I really had low expectations but this one rose cutting rooted. This last year it took off big time...have had to cut it back at least twice during the year as canes were reaching 10 feet. It's not in the proper location for such a large rose. Watching your video, it made so much sense that this is no different than roses being taken out of nursery beds and shipped. I feel much more confident now making the move.

I would love to have some sticks from it and would trade you for my old garden roses which are dark red and cherry red that bloom once. Paul what zone are you in? We are in 6b, but this year we hit zone 9. I hope it stays there. We are growing a lot of old garden roses that have been here at least 50 years. Two of my neighbors knew the people who lived here when it was an apple orchard and these roses are super old. I have added other roses, but the old roses are such beautiful hardy roses they are worth having - and they transplant real easily. One came up in the grass and in 2 years it was as big as its mother rose - which is 12 ft. Now I'm moving it to a teepee and creating an arbor effect with a Jackmanni clematis. I couldn't find another clematis for zone 6 that would grow in shady areas (North-facing) microclimate against the house that would top the arbor. The roses won't go up over the top and I heard you mention growing a clematis in and I loved that idea. I wanted white, but I couldn't find a white clematis that would take shade in zone 6. If you know of one, could you let me know please? It will get some sun, but its very bright shade. The rose that's there is cherry red and the rose I'm transplanting is dark red. That's why I wanted white clematis. Thank you for sharing your wonderful videos
@Paulzimmermanroses7 жыл бұрын
I'm in 7 but this winter who knows! We are way early leafing out and hopefully we won't get a late freeze. It sounds like you inherited a lovely garden. That many old roses and that old. How wonderful! I don't know much about clematis so I don't think I can't help much with that. You might try seeing if there is a clematis society that is online. Maybe google clematis societies?

Thank you! That was reassuring. I have hydrangeas coming in April and need the space cleared so I moved my roses into containers (because I’m going to move within the next couple years and want to take them with me anyway). So I moved them and it frosted overnight. I was freaking just now. When will be a good time to fertilize them?
@Paulzimmermanroses4 жыл бұрын
If you just moved them into containers I wouldn't fertilize them for at least a few months. Particularly if you are getting frost. You can use a liquid seaweed based fertilizer to help with transplanting but that's about it. Your local garden center should be able to recommend a product.
@ksero10004 жыл бұрын

great video Paul, I'm moving my climber from a pot to the ground is it the same? I already cut it down to a 2 foot and I know where I want to move it to. should the rose be buried deeper than it was in the pot or about the same?
@Paulzimmermanroses7 жыл бұрын
You want to make sure to bury the bud union. So, if in the pot, the bud union is above soil level plant it deeper. If the bud union is already buried you are fine at soil level.

I need to move my English rose bush from my rental to my new home. Unfortunately, it has to be moved now. I'm in northwest Ohio, and it's cold here, but the ground is not yet frozen. I've trimmed the bush back already, but have not yet dug it up to move it. Will these tips still work with this time of year? I really can't go back and get it later, and I don't wish to leave it as it is sentimental. Thank you!
@Paulzimmermanroses6 жыл бұрын
Cutting it back was the good first step. 12" - 18" will be good. The only thing I would suggest is when you dig it up try to get some root ball as opposed to making it a bareroot.

Hi Paul, I have a climbing rose that I would like to move to another area of the yard. It's a huge rose with 8-10 feet canes in one season. It's a Kordes climber by the name of "Tradition 95". I planted it in November 2014. Can I move this rose now in October? I live in Zone 5 and we are having cooler temps - low to mid-40's at night, low 60s during the day. I'd like to move this rose now, but am afraid that I might kill it! Also, if I do move it, should I prune it back and if so, by how much? Thank you for advice you can give me.
@Paulzimmermanroses9 жыл бұрын
+bella rosa I would wait and move it in late winter/early spring when you normally prune in your area. I'm afraid if you move it now it won't have time to get established. When you do move it make sure all the leaves are off and cut it back to about 2' high.

@@Paulzimmermanroses The roses I want to save and relocate are over 20-25yrs old and unfortunately I'll have no choice but to move them in April as I'll have to travel to California for them. I know growing season isn't optimal time for moving roses but if I don't rescue them they'll be removed anyways. My issue is that the place they're in is literally a 18-24in wide by 5-6ft aprx. strip of dirt surrounded by cement. So I'll probably have to dig carefully under cement for roots and can only use 2 sides for leverage to loosen roots/root ball 🤔
