Join us on our journey as we leave a life in corporate america to come back to Wyoming and help on the family ranch.
Our Wyoming Life features our Wyoming ranch and our ranch family. Giving you a look into the workings of ranching from raising cattle to raising and harvesting crops. Erin will join you weekly out of the garden, showing you how she helps provide for our family through growing produce and selling at local farmers markets, and Mike will take you along as he tends to the animals and land of ranch, from calving to fencing to planting and harvesting hay.

Hey Mike, on our Ranch in Idaho I got a Queensland Blue Heeler when I was a boy and she was able to do what it took 4 hired hands to do when driving the cattle. The cool part is we no longer had calves fall behind like when we only used people. I watch your frustration when herding cows yourself and think if you added a Heeler you could move them yourself. They don't tear up cows like a colie just a nip on a heel and that's all it took. We ran registered Shorthorns on two ranches. We ended up selling the ranch in Idaho and 2 ranches and one farm in Colorado. Trying to compete with all the beef coming in from South America and Australia in the 80's made the family get out before we got hurt. Too bad the home grown and farmers trend wasn't going on back then, we probably would be ranching today. My kids are the first generation off the ranch and watching you find your way is a real treat. It brings back lots of great memories and those days trying to feed the herds with square bails out of the back of a pickup during blizzards. Keep up the good work and hang tough.

Cattle always amaze me, and I've been around them my whole life, so smart at times and dumb at others. Want to move the cows? They can't see the 20' open gap in the corner of the field. Want them in the corral? They find that 3" gap made from a post settling and bust it wide open. Always something new

Found your channel recently and have watched one posting after the other. Pure contentment!! I bet you had your bosses and coworkers scratching their heads wondering why y’all would leave broadcasting for “THIS!” chuckle I’m in Texas now, raised in corn and hog farmers..Iowa. Loved being around the farms for years and love it to this day. Supposed to be another year of extreme flooding this year...thinking maybe they ought farm rice and catfish! sigh..those poor people! They’ve had their share of disappointments and heartache....dadgum corps of engineers anyway! Have a blessed day!

Respect on the farm, or ranch makes the job so much easier. The old saying, you attract more bees with sugar water than vinegar comes to mind. I always found being gentle and not yelling to make working cattle easier than yelling and flapping arms. The trailer loaded twice as fast my way. Thanks for sharing your life with me here Mike, Erin. Your motivating me to start a garden next year. I hope you got my email awhile back. I never got a response so I'm not sure if you did.

Hi again! Having fun on the ranch today huh Mike! Last week didn't go so well either I hear. That darn wind doesn't help either!! A couple ranch friends who do cattle but after helping them through it all it's why I've done horses and dogs! Probably why I greatly appreciate all that you and Erin do! So much land like going on safari every time you go out! No wonder you like those higher hills! And yes I can only imagine you do like and need a go hide moment too! Hoping your bill is ok and you can't help but smile at the old guy cause maybe he wants a go hide moment too lol lol! Hang in there Mike cause it's all a blessing and part of your Wyoming Life !!!!! Quite the video Mike! Hope you find your missing bull soon! I've heard stories of ranchers not being able to roundup bulls before winter and came back in the spring and found them alive and well right where they last saw them. Also, I totally agree about your statement about people who say farmers and ranchers don't treat there animals well! I would also invite them to spend a day on a farm or ranch. Farmers and ranchers like yourself and my family depend on your animals to make a living off of and also feed their families with products produced from those same animals. Also for almost all livestock producers there is a great degree of pride in being known for being a great stockman! As always keep on keeping on and have a great fall as preg checking and the fall cattle sale season ramps up! The fall cattle sale season is one part of the year I look forward to!

@@OurWyomingLife Thanks Mike, we actually have a spring calving herd. I am not a huge fan of fall calving. When I meant fall sale season I meant going to sale barns and getting calves in the feedlot from Western ranches and then also going to Seedstock operations production sales. We may get into fall calving as our herd expands. Our expanding cowherd will be a great addition to our stocker and feeder cattle.

Sure is a lot of nice stock you've got there, I'm sure bubbles will turn up safe and sound. The grass you got there looked really nice a lot of people don't know it but that's crested wheat, when it's green it actually has more protein in it than the best alfalfa. It's certainly one advantage to ranching in the dry land. A wet climate won't grow grass that rich.

Hi Mike , I hope Bubbles is just chilling out somewhere he is pretty smart you wouldn’t think finding such a large animal would be so difficult LOL . You mentioned about how some people judge ranchers on the way their animals are cared for and like anything their are the good guys like you who treat and care for their animals with the upmost respect and then their is a ones who treat their animals like inanimate objects and have no respect for their animals . I am glad I found your Vlogs because in the beginning I must admit being a vegetarian I didn’t hold ranchers in high regards because of the propaganda I had seen and heard about . Although I had my reservations about the effical treatment of farm animals raised for human consumption though I wasn’t one who was over the top in pushing my beliefs down people’s throats . Then I came to realise that not all farmers or ranchers are like this and through my ignorance I was stereotyping them as one and the same and being close minded about my opinion . That is until I started watching your Vlogs at first I watched with a critical attitude thinking here we go another one of these big ranchers who is more interested in the money then the animals well being but how very wrong I was . Watching your Vlogs has opened my mind on how ranchers are run by effical ranchers who care about their animals well being and priority is to give their charges the best of care and respect. I wish all ranchers and farmers were like you and I believe that some could learn a leasing or two from you on how a ranch is run with the animals welfare is top priority. I want to thank you both for open my eyes and becoming more excepting although a know there are still a lot of farms out there who do use questionable practices when raising their animals I am glad their are ranchers like you who give ranching a good reputation. Blessing and best wishes to you all .

Al Br the testicles hanging are the easiest sign, about a foot long and about 6 to 8 inches around and just look like a smooth sack between the rear set of legs. Cows have milk bags or udders with four teets or nipples. The udders hang down about 8-10 inches maybe more, but are about 12 inches wide and about the same length front to back.

Your wife gets spooked if someone comes to say hi, so you said in a video then in this one you said maybe we should just keep it to youtube and watch the videos and make our comments, thats all good, i couldn't come visit even if i wanted to , i am in Canada, new brunswick, farming life is up and down here too, there are some farmer that do it wrong and its them ones that give you good ones a bad name, thats how it works with everything, just like where there is fans,there's haters, thats how trump gut in the white house, lol, but thats another story, grate videos, thank you.

Is there a particular reason to keep the bulls of the cows? Do they become overly aggressive or something related?
@OurWyomingLife
@OurWyomingLife 6 жыл бұрын
If they were in all the time we could end up having calves all the time. Taking them off controls when the cows will have calves and ensure they are close to the same size when we sell. Also feeding in the winter time with bulls out the can get spooky. Thanks -Mike

Very enjoyable. I've been subscribed to OWL for a few months and I love your family now. And my question is what IS a bone head? I'm sure it's something that we all go through. But I consider a proposition for you. More later. Best regards

Wondering if you carry a handgun when out searching for wayward bulls? Might be handy for dispatching snakes, scaring a coyote , or deal I g with an aging bull's broken leg.

Hey Mike why not use AI instead of the 7 bulls I remember from your cost of cattle video you discuss the cost of keeping a cow through a year especially the past few you've had to buy hay. When does it become more cost effective to go AI vs au naturale?
