Locally owned feed stores sure are the lifeblood of our farming community. Being friends and knowing everyone by name makes a world of difference. The manager of our Southern States Co-op is a close friend of mine and is always there to help. When we can’t make it into town to get feed he brings it to us, or takes our bags with him to fill, in turn, saving us a trip. The guys that work in the feed mill know what livestock we have and what goals we have in mind so it’s so much easier for them to help us work up rations or improve on what we’re doing. From seed to soil samples, and feed to fencing supplies, we’d be in a world of hurt without our local feed store. Thanks for sharing yours Mike.

A very good Volga. My father and grandfather owned a feed store in Wisconsin. The best part about working there as a teen was the conversation with the customers. My father sold the business in 1976 and retired. To this day I think about the people and the character building hard work at the store. I just found your. Channel last week. It is one of the most interesting channels on KZbin.

Love the fact that y'all try to patronize local businesses and haven't gone to the big box stores. The backbone of the American economy is small businesses. Love the fact that you try to find new and interesting ways to start a scene. Shows off a bit more of the ranch each time.

Awesome video Mike! I'm glad you did this. I'm from southern Illinois and raising Holstein-beef on a small fourth generation farm. We are lucky to have a small town feed store that takes pride in the work and feed they sell. The "chain" store feed just doesn't cut it. Jess it's not always the price. But it is the end product. Good feed makes good healthy animals and happy farmers/ranchers. Thanks Mike and good luck Jess

Its always a resource that a lot of beginners don't know about. A local non-chain feed store has a wealth of information and KNOW their area and the feeds they sell. Were we are in Kentucky, we are Blessed with an Amish feed mill owned by a man that really knows feeds and cares about his customers. They are very concerned about GMO feeds and have an excellent supply of Non GMO rations. Nice tour and a great feed store!

Good job! Bomgarrs moved into Cody, took the old Kmart bldg. there’s also a Tractor Supply but nothing beats the established feed store....unless its the liquor store with a drive thru , on Big Horn Ave. when I was a kid....you got a “church key” with your order. Prior to pop tops, obviously.

How about a clip video of all the companies that support the ranch. Your well contractor, vet, the fire department putting out the chicken house, the fuel route guy that fills your tanks. Wow, that was fast, Mike! We bugged you on Thursday, and you delivered on Sunday! Thanks for the tour. Our local (and tiny) feed store recently changed hands, too. The new owner is committed to expanding its role as a community center and overall get-together place. Her cousin is a beautician and offers her services there, too -- probably the only feed store around with a pedicure chair in the corner! And a beer-and-wine liquor license is working its way through the bureaucracy. Only in California, lol!

I might pay a few cents more on some items and some items are cheaper, but you sure can't find Aunt Mary's Peanut and Pecan Brittle (made 4 blocks from the store) on the counter at the chains or the locally made bird houses you find at the CoOp! And you sure won't get lime or fertilizer delivered and spread by the ton at TS!

Great video, and fast work too! An idea born Thursday evening, final product delivered Sunday morning now that's something to be proud of! I agree with everyone mentioning the importance of buying local and supporting small business. Too many small businesses have folded in my area due to major corporate retail. It's so frustrating to go to a big box store and spend too much time walking the aisles looking for the hardware item and then having to purchase twice as many of the item as you need just because of the packaging! I love a support my local hardware stores as often as I can. I love walking in to the store and having the owner and staff call you by name and know their inventory. Thanks for sharing your story (stories) with over 50,000 folks on a regular basis. Take care and God Bless your family and your ranch.

I'd like to see more of Jess if you have the time. I could stand more to learn more about what a store like hers has to offer a farm or a ranch, not just selling feed. Now that I think of it, I'd like to learn about all the individuals and operations which are not ranches, but that the ranch depends on. Mechanics, welders, veterinarians, etc... and I'm sure a dozen or more that I don't know about.

Mike, we've gotten away from the heavy plastic lick tubs in favor of liquid feed. The cows love it, and it is less effort to fill the liquid feeders than to haul around the tubs. Also, you don't have a bunch of empty plastic tubs that wind up in the landfill sooner or later.

Reminds me of growing up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, where visiting the feed store and grain grinding facility was the highlight of the week. Of course the trip to town was just not this but a trip to the grocery store, doctor, dentist, implement dealer, etc. A break from the daily grind, so to speak that got us off of the farm and to the big town of 2,000 people which was about 10 miles from the farm..I recently watched a video on KZbin made by Wyoming Public Broadcasting which told the story of the horrific 1949 Blizzard. How did this effect the ranch that you now own and the Gillette area in general? Also, have you ever considered starting and farm or ranch stay? This could be another income stream, but would mean more work for busy people. Just a thought.Good luck and keep up the great work.

We have plans for inviting people to the ranch, its coming up :) Gilbert had a few stories about the blizzard of 49, mostly about blasting out roads and paths for cows to get water - Mike

Seems like every time you show pictures of the pigs they have doubled in size. These little piggies will be going to market before long. Enjoyed the trip to the feed store. The feed store we went to when I was in high school is still in business, but the people that ran it retired years ago. Their son was about our age loaded the feed. Then he took over the store and has long since retired. He sold it and they move it down the highway, but it still carries the same name. I love to go there, but we have moved about 40 miles away. So I seldom get over there.
