Happy new year guys. A few tips for the BSS, just had my first one and there not too bad...make sure you have fire extinguishers rated at 8A 55B, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fuel and gas shut off signs displayed, good ventilation, make sure you have blue flames and not orange on the oven and hob, the examiner will want to see the instant hot water boiler working, fire blanket mounted on the wall near the hob, any rubber fuel hoses around the engine must be fire proof, (just let the examiner point out any that need replacing) Don't worry if it doesn't pass first time, you will have a failure sheet to work from and a free re-test. Good luck.

Hi me again forgot to mention the Bss there are two different Bss tests one is for leisure users and one for liveaboard users the liveaboard test is much much stricter then the leisure one it's up to you what you tell the examiner but let the examiner do the test and give you a list of jobs to do is the easiest way to do it. Tip for your bathroom myself and lots of other boaters use vinyl flooring glued to the walls in the shower (mine is a very nice mosaic pattern looks just like tiles) this way it can never leak and no tiles can ever fall off with vibrations works out much cheaper and quick and easy to fit.

Thanks so much. I have never heard of there being a difference between leisure and liveaboard BSS. Mind you I have never done one either! Also thanks for the bathroom tip. We have however already got our tiles ready to go. I know people often deliberate using tiles on a boat but I think with the correct flexible adhesive and grout it can work ok. Fingers crossed anyway!!! We live and learn! Thanks again!

My advice on your clarifier is to fit as big as will fit in the space you have remember it cost nothing to heat up as the engine does it as you go along.I always get mine from screwfix or cylinders direct but these days copper has got so expensive it may be cheaper to buy stainless steel and the best bit of advice is probably don't let the maverick anywhere near it get somebody who knows what they are doing to test the pump pressure before you start and then fit the pressure relief valve in the right place then you should be alright

I hate the BSS too. I had to chain up my cooker and my gas bottles after 19 years of not having them chained, make sure you have enough ventilation, fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors which should be high up and of course don't forget to have things labelled seems to be quite important. Such as "Fuel Cut off", "Gas Cut Off" etc.

@@TheNomadicCrobot its basically time management,as I live on my own and work retail and shifts ,lates,getting home 8.50pm or so. If I can crack then schedules,and do less editing,then I will be a lot happier

I got my calorifier from asap supplies. Mine is only a 15 litre one as it’s not a live aboard and it’s not really big enough for more than one shower or washing up. I would go for something at least 50 litres or more. Whatever you can fit in the space

Using waste heat sounds cheaper if you don't mind waiting to bring 50 liters from 5 C to 35 C this winter (summer 15 C to 35) - LPG tankless is 3 minutes for endless hot - buy local w/ warranty
