We are new to MBTP this year. My child is in 5th grade, but because it is for “gifted” kids I picked a few 4th grade units to start with. We LOVED the science but the LA was too easy. We have now started the ages 9-11 (their 5th grade level) and it is right on target. Challenging- but not too challenging. I love that it is written to the child. It really helps lighten my workload and my child likes the independence.

We are just trying our first literature unit for The Giver. My daughter and I are loving it. I have started looking at getting a few units for next year. It was nice to hear about some of the other units. I might need to pick up the science of social studies that goes with the literature. We could definitely not follow a whole year, we follow too many rabbit trails, but liking the idea of a couple units geared toward each child.

Oh nice! I definitely think getting one full unit and seeing how you like it before investing a ton up-front is a solid idea. Love that you know what works for you guys and your learning style.

I looked at it for several years myself before jumping into it. Even though I think we made great curriculum choices for what we needed in the past, this has been really perfect for us this year and I'm happy we're using it!

Hey sweet mama! We will soon begin a literature based curriculum and looking at the list of books I can already see it's going to be really hard financially. But I know it will be worth it. Thank you for this description of these resources! Very helpful! 🙏☺️

Oh no! Is thee a way you can source some of the materials used? I know that isn't always an option for everyone, and is often still expensive as well.

We found a bunch of the student books used but without writing on FB market and on Abe books. Hope that helps. The digital version is exactly the same thing and a bit cheaper. I’m just the kind of person who needs a physical copy.

Thanks for this review. I have been trying to decide between this and MCT for LA's next year. I got used versions of both. I love MCT grammar island so far. I'm not sure I want even try MBTP. I looked at the science and it's not very exciting looking. I still haven't found a science curriculum that is engaging for my gifted kid.

Oh interesting! The science has by far been the most exciting and worthwhile component to this curriculum for me. The resources you read from every day are full of pictures and real world examples and are super engaging, and it changes from unit to unit. It's hands-on most days and the kids do all sorts of experiments and activities that are directly relatable to the lessons. MBTP is curated with gifted kids in mind. My son tested into gifted programs his whole younger school career and he has said it's his favorite part of MBTP, he already can't wait for us to get back to another science block! Hopefully you guys can find something else that fits well for your family!

We did MCT Island level his 3rd grade year and MCT Town level his 4th. It's totally different from what MBTP does. We also enjoyed MCT while we were using it! It's been really fun to get back into learning through literature this year, which is what MCT doesn't do as thoroughly, though the Mud chapter books were really cute and fun.

@@MindfullyLiv maybe the 8-10 is just not a good science year for us. My kid is a science junkie and has done most of the stuff in it that he was bored. We did the magnetism unit. The projects/experiments you had mentioned for the older year, we have done a lot them already through various literature/unit studies.

@@ravenbird3014 have you tried Berean Builders? It’s 2-3 times a week, written to the child, and a hands on component to almost every lesson. My son really enjoys it and he is also a science junkie 😊

Do the language arts units build on each other, or can we pick and choose?

Hi, I just bought a few books for possibly unit studies and wondering how long one book takes for everyone roughly? Thank you
@MindfullyLiv
@MindfullyLiv 4 ай бұрын
Hi Raelene! So per MBTP, the unit studies are scheduled to take 2-3 weeks each depending on whether or not you're following a 4 or a 5 day school week. It has taken us about a month of school, or 4 weeks, to complete each unit study so far. I don't have a rigid homeschool expectation, so I would say if we WERE doing MBTP consistently the way it's laid out every day, 2-3 weeks (probably 3!) is about how long I'd say one would take at the 10-12 year old level!

@@MindfullyLiv Thank you very much! This gives me such variety with this curricula and just started buying different age brackets for my 11 year old. He is ahead per se but needs extra writing skills so I picked and choose what I felt he needed and will go from there. I really love the lay out from MBTP and hope he does (which I think he will).

Do you finish the unit in one school year doing this three days a week?
@MindfullyLiv
@MindfullyLiv 3 ай бұрын
We most likely will not finish the entire program this school year! Each unit is designed to take about 2-3 weeks, we definitely take around 4 for each one. Plus school breaks 😬

How does this curriculum work with multiple kids/ages?
@MindfullyLiv
@MindfullyLiv 5 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say it would work for multiple ages, unless your children are at the same academic level of language arts and science/ social studies. On the website for each level, there is a list of what your child should already be able to accomplish before beginning the curriculum.
