I really enjoy the trains off loading and unloading the coal loads. Have you thought about putting in a power plant or something close to the other one it just an idea but you have a really cool impressive model railroad layout

There are three loadouts on the layout. The flood loader in another video is operated by a Tortoise that moves a rod up and down via a DPDT toggle switch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6vQc4RqdtiSo8U Calcifer 1 has a loosely mounted chute (square tubing) angled down from the silo. Coal drops from the silo via a funnel at the top end, and a cell phone vibrator motor mounted at the lower end causes the coal to slide. Green Goblin uses a spring as an auger. It's a better mechanism than the vibrator. Key is the square tube that the spring sits in is much bigger than the spring. Getting one that the spring barely fits in causes binding. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWKtYZKjppaSirc Both Calcifer 1 and Green Goblin are operated by foot switch so that I can keep both hands on the throttle.

Great operational model. I'm impressed by the realism and the automations. How do you control the switch at 4:13? is it triggered automatically when the free running car is detected at the end of the track?

The Peco turnout is thrown by a Peco solenoid that is controlled by an Azatrax D2T-3W. The D2T uses two pairs of infrared emitters/detectors. One is at the top of the switchback next to the dumper on poles; it lines the switch straight when a car blocks the IR light. The other is embedded in the kickback track beyond the turnout; it lines the switch to diverging so the car goes to the yard when the IR light reflects off the bottom of the car.

I've settled on Woodland Scenics fine cinder ballast which as I understand it is walnut shells. I've tried real anthracite (black lung risk) and black art sand used for sand painting. The sand is heavy and had particles that a magnet picked up.

Do you push into your dump yard because there is no way out at the other end of that yard? Or would you rather push in then to navigate threw the yard and get back out in front of the cars?

The yard can only be entered from one end by a loco. There is a way to pull a train nearer to the yard and then do a runaround thru the rotary dumper, pull forward, then push a shorter distance, but the long push is faster. On Google Earth the Sandusky Coal Dock has in/out tracks next to each other, but I didn't have the room for that.

How does the loader work at calcifer 1? I am building up my layout and whatever you are doing is allot better than anything I have come up with yet.

It is shown here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWKtYZKjppaSirc Gearmotor with a spring stuck on the shaft. The spring was from one of those little drawers at the local hardware. Motor has a cheapo pwm to control the speed. The tube that the spring is in has to be a lot larger than the spring, otherwise things jam, and it has to tilt down.

Sorry, I describe the Green Goblin motor. Calcifer 1 uses a phone vibrator motor. Vibration encourages the coal to slide down a slanted square plastic tube from the silo.

how does the coal get back to the loaders once it's dropped off? is there a underlayout conveyer belt or something simpler?

The coal drops into plastic jars. I unscrew them and pour them back into the silos.

Calcifer 1 is a kit from Walthers. The turntable is Peco. The dumper is part of a 30-year-old kit from State Street Models. The animation mechanisms and everything else are scratch built.
