One thing that I really like is that this show is not about “saving the world”, “protecting the humanity”, or any of those superhero cliches. In fact, it’s not really a superhero drama. It’s the life of people, that happen to have superpowers. a slice of life, humanism

Great reaction. So, so great. I got the warm fuzzies just like you guys did when I watched the romance unfold between Mihyun and Doo Sik. Him floating when he kissed her for the first time was so cute and we see where Bonseok got it from. It was so romantic. Y'all may have missed some stuff though. Remember in episode 8, the boss told Mihyun that she was on desk duty only cause she lost some of her eyesight? She really didn't, cause as you can see, she was able to see Doo Sik sitting on that tower after he delivered her food. She's just pretending to not have all her eyesight cause she didn't have a taste for field work after that mission where dude was just shooting everybody. And the boss actually wanted Doo Sik to kill that North Korean leader. There was going to be a summit between the North and the South to discuss reunification. It's what him and Mihyun's 'supervisor' were talking about. He didn't want that, so he sent Doo Sik to kill him, but he didn't. Hence why when he got the news he was like 'why does it say heart attack and not assassination?'. Keep up the good commentary too. I love the discussions afterwards!

Little fun fact. Actor who played Min Yongjun is Moon Sung-Keun. His father was very influential reverend in 80's and 90's. And he went and visited North Korea without South Korean government's approval and met with Kim Il-Sung in 1989. He was jailed for this act. I thought it was ironic that the son sent an agent to kill Kim Il-Sung, man who his father was imprisoned for... even tho it's fiction.

As I already wrote in the comment on the previous episode, Kim Il-sung's death also really happened. He was the first president of North Korea and his death actually occurred two weeks before the inter-Korean summit in 1994 which ultimately did not take place. Kim Doo-sik's mission was to assassinate Kim Il-sung in order to sour relations between the two Koreas, but as he instead died of a heart attack he did not obtain the desired effect, although in any case the summit mentioned above did not it was held anyway. In the present, i.e. 2018, Min Yong-jun is restless because of the 2018 summit between the two Koreas, exactly as he was in 1994. The reason, my hypothesis, is to be found in the National Intelligence Service itself: without the tensions with North Korea, the function of the NIS is lost, even less the development of super agents. In short, the NIS agrees that there is an enemy to fight. Again as I wrote previously, the Namsan donkatsu that Doo-sik introduced to Mi-hyun and which is his favorite food and the color purple which is her favorite, are the reason why Mi-hyun has a restaurant of Namsan donkatsu, with a huge bright sign and a purple roof: they are like a beacon that can be seen from the sky in case Doo-sik passes by. She still waits for him. The mission that Min Yong-jun gave to Mi-hyun was not to study Doo-sik as he had been told, but rather for them to become intimate with each other: Doo-sik was increasingly restless and ill disposed towards his work and his bosses; having no family to return to, this made him a difficult agent to control, who could escape at any moment. But if Doo-sik had fallen in love with Mi-hyun and vice versa, then he would have had every reason to return, which in fact is exactly what happened. In short, Mi-hyun was used and what's more, because of her, she was Doo-sik's downfall. Again as I wrote in the previous comment, the reason why Mi-hyun wears glasses is because her eyes would be damaged, as reported by her card, damaged by the flashlight grenade that she threw instead of the tear gas grenade during the mission of the 1992; but as we have seen, she actually covered her eyes, so in fact she lied and consequently her glasses are her cover, but as we have seen in these episodes, she always has the best sight how perfect.

Thank you for this excellent breakdown. The intention of Min Yong-jun makes sense when you consider he's playing the long game. I still don't trust him.

actually the tower is "N Seoul Tower(also known as Namsan Tower)", which is one of the well known landmarks in Seoul. You can see the tower from anywhere in Seoul, because it is built upon a mountain named Namsan. And there was a donkatsu place in Namsan area, which was very famous for its taste. That is the place Doosik and Mihyun ate donkatsu on their first date, and that is why she is now running a restaurant named "Namsan Donkatsu".

In this episode itself it is implied that Doo Shik has not killed the North Korean leader. If you saw how Director Min was annoyed by the fact that the newspaper headline said the North Korean leader Kim Il Sung has passed away due to a cardiac infarction and not due to an assassination you'd have realized that Director Min wanted it to be an assassination and since it was not that's why he was pissed off and wanted to get Doo Shik to report back to him about the mission he was given.

Ladyfingers are little biscuit cookies, the joke with mentos 😂😂😂 it’s so cheesy but I love it! The cherry blossoms is to show time has passed when the bloom and when they fall. As for the colors she mentions purple meaning crazy and she likes to be the crazy person. I like that she mentions she doesn’t like black and white because the world isint black and white, agency’s like the one she works will try to generalize people they are either good or bad, they can’t be in between. Their is no color in the office only when they go outside. Green is combination of blue and yellow, orange is a combination of red and yellow and purple is red and blue. Heesoo says she doesn’t like orange because it can’t decide to be red or yellow but Bongseok says that it’s not trying to be red or yellow it’s a whole new color it’s trying to be orange that can be a bit of each. This again put emphasis that it cannot be generalized into a category such as things being black and white.

Among the scenes, there are things hidden here and there that only Koreans can guess about. There is a scene where Du-sik flies and delivers pork cutlet to Mi-hyeon and happily eats kimbap alone in a high tower. Kimbap is a food that can be eaten quickly. In America, it's things like sandwiches or donuts. Doo-sik was in a hurry to give Mi-hyeon the pork cutlet (for fear that she would be hungry), so he actually skipped the meal. He smiled happily while eating kimbap. In this drama, these small props tell more of the story.

I think Namsan Tower don't have any metaphor in this show. And Mihyun wear eyeglasses after 1992 Operation. She blowed up flashbang in Ep.8. than she dropped the Black agent(Field Agent) and became White Agent(Office Agent). From that time she pretended her eye sight gonna bad. But she still has good super eyesight and hearing also good taste ability. so she could start donkatsu restaurant her taste ability(check ep.8 first date with Doosik)

As for the mission, Kim Doosik was given a specific secret mission by Director Min. Whether Doosik followed his order or not, we will find out later, bcs from the newspaper coverages in this ep, the result obviously is not what Director Min intended or wanted to. Then Director Min mobilized his and other agency and main government that Doosik is to blame, also seemingly covering what his real orders are. About purple, if you remember in episode 2, Mihyun painted the restaurant roof purple. Us viewers were puzzled why would she paint a roof in that strange color. Now we know that Doosik managed to find Mihyun's flat just from its purple curtains. In the present, she hopes Doosik would find them due to the purple roof if he ever comes back to them 🥺

It was actually a bluff when Deputy Director Min gave Mi-hyeon the task of keeping an eye on Doo-sik. The real purpose was to create a weakness in Doo-sik and force him to return. Deputy Director Min is the kind of person who uses people as tools. Under such a boss, Du-sik would have been forced to perform all kinds of inhumane tasks. The scenario that allows us to fully guess this unseen story is really great.

Once again the episode establishes a connection between fiction and historical reality. The North Korean regime has attempted at least 3 times to assassinate a President of the Republic of Korea (President of South Korea). In 1968, a unit of elite North Korean troops attempted to storm the Blue House (the South Korean version of the White House) with the purpose of killing President Park Chung Hee, which would end with dozens of deaths on both sides. In 1974, in a new attack against Park Chung Hee, his wife, First Lady Yuk Young-soo, was accidentally murdered. And in 1983 the North Koreans tried to assassinate another South Korean president, Chun Doo-hwan, in an attack in Burma, where dozens of people died. In response to these assassination attempts against their Presidents, South Korea devised plans to assassinate the dictator of North Korea, Kim Il Sung (whose death was presented in the episode) and organized a black operations unit known as the Unit 684, which existed between 1968 and 1971, and whose sole purpose was to kill the North Korean leader, but the unit had a tragic end when it staged a mutiny that ended in the death of all its members. Added to that, we have that in 1988 the military dictatorship in South Korea ended and democracy began, but in the early years of the 1990s there were tensions between sectors of the South Korean intelligence services, accustomed to being all-powerful during the military dictatorship, and the new democratic administrations. That is why it is a credible scenario within the universe of the series, where an executive of South Korean intelligence uses a superhuman to try to assassinate the North Korean dictator with his superpowers, and above all because we see that the Director has an agenda contrary to the policies of the democratic government of the day. In this stage of the show, the deadly confrontation between North Korea and South Korea, with reference to the real dynamics of the conflict in its most critical moments, will have absolute prominence.
@arts_group-v1p Жыл бұрын
Excellent historical and political context to better understand the episode. I would add that at that time there was certainly an attempt to de-escalate the situation and improve the relationship between North and South, but not really reunification, which remained (and remains to this day) a utopian goal, very distant and almost impossible, especially because the Kim dynasty is not willing to give up power in the North, using ideology as a justification. And we must remember that less than 7 years earlier, North Korea had shot down a South Korean civilian passenger plane in a terrorist attack, as seen in the previous episode, and the dictator whose death occurred in this episode was the same one who in 1950 (44 years earlier at the time of the episode) started the Korean War with his invasion of South Korea to try to annex it to his country. Our hero Kim Doo-sik has deep disagreements with the Director, with whom he obviously has a tense relationship of mutual distrust. Because Kim Doo-sik is a loyal agent but has a deep sense of morality, while it is obvious that the Director has a political agenda of his own, and as you point out at that time there were high officials of the intelligence service who came from the era of the military dictatorship (like the Director) who disagreed with the policies of the new democratic governments, such as détente with the North. It seems obvious that the Director used Kim Doo-sik for his own plans, but our hero did not obey orders. Lee Mi-hyun also disagrees with the general policy of the agency division commanded by the Director, and that is why she has faked damage to her vision to avoid participating in black operations such as the massacre at the banquet in the Korean region of China, but she needs the job for personal reasons. For me, their romantic relationship is wonderful, very lovely, and with incredible chemistry.

I remember that in city hunter 😢
@arts_group-v1p Жыл бұрын
@@mpolynice30 Effectively, that's right. I was not lucky enough to see that kdrama, but from what I have read the plot also has to do with this turbulent period, between the late 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, of the transition from the authoritarian regime to democracy, in South Korea. A period that also coincided with an escalation in the conflict with North Korea that even led Bill Clinton to consider attacking the North (over the issue of the North Korean nuclear weapons program), but which was de-escalated thanks largely to politics of detente by South Korean President Kim Young-sam (1993-1998), a moderate conservative. In City Hunter the female lead was also an agent who worked in intelligence services in which the senior surviving officers of the past military dictatorship still have influence (despite more than 20 years having passed), and the male lead was a vigilante seeking revenge for the death of his father, an agent betrayed by his superiors (during a mission to assassinate high-ranking North Korean officials in the 1980s).

The real beef of director Min when he found out about the death of North Korea's Leader was the fact that the intel reported that he died from a heart attack and NOT from an assassination, implying that he was expecting to receive a report about his assassination. So we can assume not only that Doo-shik's mission was to kill the North Korea's leader, but also that director Min wanted that people knew that he was killed. We have to remember that if the relationship between both Korea's got worse, it would benefit his agency and his program with the super black ops agents. Since there was no assassination, Doo-shik was considered a traitor.
@atkim122 Жыл бұрын
I also wanted to add more historical context to the North Korean leader dying in 1994, from the perspective of a South Korean. This is the man who started a war in 1950 that would kill millions (including disease/starvation not just combat) on both sides. 36000 Americans died in that war. People old enough would remember fleeing south leaving all their belongings behind as the northern army initially blitzkrieged their way through. The southern controlled territory was basically reduced to a Miami, holding out in Busan before the UN launched a counteroffensive to drive the north back up to the other side of the original border. Had help not arrived in time there would likely be no South Korea today. So imagine finally learning of this "devil's" demise and it was the news headline of the year for them at that time. He's also present day Kim Jong Un's paternal grandfather. Kim Il Sung was meant to be assassinated by Doosik to derail the upcoming peace talks (both countries remain technically at war to this day). This is why the director wanted to know everything about him before the mission. He previously displayed too much independence (trying the save the doomed plane without permission/conspiracy theorists might also suspect the spy agency knew of the bombing plot but let it play out to keep the relations between N and S as bad as possible) and the director suspected he has too much empathy for this line of work. That Kim dies naturally from heart failure made the mission a failure and the director is 100% sure Doosik's humanism resulted in mercy.
