Hi! Cute family, great video! I’m from the SF Bay Area and I’m thinking of moving to Raleigh. Can you give us an update on the differences, pros and cons since getting settled there?

Thanks! I’m glad you like the video! We can actually afford our lifestyle and people here are generally in less of a rush/anxious… i would say Raleigh and Cary are more family friendly. I notice it in the on-the-road driving style specifically.. the SF Bay Area didn’t necessarily have the infrastructure for the .com boom in the 90s and seemed to adapt whereas the research triangle area is planned for growth and success. The biotech and technology sector here in North Carolina is growing responsibly in an exciting direction. The weather is more seasonal.. there are truly 4 distinct seasons here. I would suggest investing in a good set of long underwear and a winter coat for the winter and be prepared for a more humid summer.. definitely not a dealbreaker though.. I would be glad to elaborate or chat further if you like. Hit me up here or on FB if you are interested.

My girlfriend just bought a home today in New Bern NC $335,000. bye bye San Diego, I’m moving to Beaufort NC. It has a micro climate that feels like San Diego…. Beau Coast Resort Community is waiting for me. I hate to leave my grandkids, but California taxes are oppressive.

We picked a suburb of Charlotte. Loved the metro are much better than Raleigh/Durham. Both have great economies and are beautiful. But metro Charlotte has much more to do, is more affordable, and more conservative. We just couldn’t be in another area with the same political mindset that destroyed CA. Glad you guys found your happy place. Great looking family and new home.

My wife and I are planning to make this same move?? I am stuck between UHaul and Penske for transporting our things and my car tow behind. Penske came out to a decent price? If I may ask, what hotels did you stay at? Or did you sleep in the car for the nights? My wife and I are worried about what hotels are safe to stay at AND can accommodate a similar setup to yours with the packing truck + car tow behind being so long? I really appreciate your video and your help!

Glad the video could help! I was between U-Haul and Penske also but ended up with Penske.. its going to be expensive regardless. Because my wife and daughter flew, I ended up using her as dispatch when I was getting toward the end of the day of driving each day. She would look about 30 miles out for a pet friendly 3 star hotel. We ended up at courtyard at marriott hotels a lot. one night I stayed at a red-roof inn and that was a little more uneasy, but still worked just fine. I would suggest against motel-6 and anything under 3 stars... Its somewhat of an insurance policy for parking all your belongings... It also helps to get in late at night and start driving early the next morning... the longer you linger, the more likely someone is to get a wise idea about a truckload of belongings... I wouldn't pack anything in the tow-behind vehicle because that can be a dead giveaway that you are packed to the brim. I also would invest in the beefiest looking master lock you can to lock up the truck door. Most any hotels will have larger parking lots or somewhere where truckers park their semis ... you just gotta ask the hotel staff the recommended place to park a large vehicle. - Let me know if you have any questions... glad to talk it out

Thank you so much Thomas for responding!! My wife and I are definitely more nervous on the road knowing there can be some sketchier places/hotels along the way. We never drove this far away from CA so it's helpful seeing and hearing your experience. We will definitely aim for 3 star and above for safety and for the larger trucks. We are possibly considering letting go of our belongings as we are a young married couple, no kids, and the Uhaul and Penske are asking $4k plus as estimates. Just added risk with the truck and car tow if we can alternatively pack everything behind us and go on the road. Thankfully no furniture and we have been renting so we don't have many household things. I know this is another thing but have you ever done pod delivery/ shipment arrangements where a company just ships your things instead of me driving with my things? Anyway, I really do appreciate the help and seeing your video is very reassuring to my wife and I!

@@felixcai5675 I would highly suggest getting rid of furniture and bulky items and start fresh. It will dramatically reduce your moving costs and to be honest, it helps turn the chapter. plus.. its a lot of fun getting furniture and home decor that is meaningful and fits the new spot. ... My wife and I wanted to go completely with PODs but that was also suuuuuper expensive.. if you re-watch the video, you can see that we actually used a POD and and Penske truck... we loaded up the POD about a month earlier with all the bulky items and things that weren't essential to daily life. I have a separate KZbin video on "How PODs Work" but its more entertainment rather than informational. ... You said you were doing the same move? - Are you moving to NC? and if so, what City?

Thank you Thomas for the information. That makes a lot of sense what you mean starting fresh, which is something I want to do with my wife as well. Penske is quoting around $4k while Uhaul is $5k+ for the move. We are going from Los Angeles to the Raleigh region. We are however in a different situation where we want to rent first before committing to any homes in NC, so honestly we are open to any city near the Raleigh/triangle area. We also have friends in Garner which we also love that city specially. As for pods, I haven't run any quotes yet so thank you for the heads up. Our main bulky item is our bed which cost us $2k (very comfy lol) but not much furniture of value honestly since our current place was furnished already. I think it's probably cheaper as you said letting go of that bed and trying to fit the rest of our lives (clothes, wife's makeup, etc.) into the car.

It’s different for sure, but don’t dwell on the negatives. If you know you don’t like humidity, then make sure you have an air conditioner. If you don’t like mosquitos, then make sure you don’t live near standing water or make sure you have a bug screen.. Raleigh is fantastic and there are all the seasons like fall and spring and summer. Do you research and figure out how close to downtown you want to live. It’s smaller than San Jose for sure, but still has everything you need

I moved from NY to NC in 2020. Coming from a huge state, it takes a bit of getting used to in NC. In NY (and LA) you find EVERYTHING and tend to be close to the essentials. NC lacks many thing but you find the equivalent and deal with it. NC also tends to be bland,living wise. Kinda like your favorite dish without some type of flavor. Depending on the city,it can be kinda boring but you try to make the best of it. But it’s definitely a place to try and a state to visit and see for yourself. 👍
