Fedora is planning on Wayland as default, yes. But most other distros wont. I suspect Fedora wont actually do it for the next release either, setting it as default for the first release of Plasma 6 seems a bit risky even if there are a lot of improvements over Plasma 5. I think the committee will postpone it but who knows, it's just speculation on my part.
@moussagacem8260 Жыл бұрын
@@Qyngali No, I'm talking about KDE not Fedora, Plasma 6 will come with Wayland enabled by default and the distro would need to add themselves X11 if they want but if they only use KDE as intended by the developers it will come with the wayland compositor and X11 will not be present. "We’re going to make a very strong push for Wayland to be the default session type for Plasma 6. The X11 session will still be there of course, and distros will be free to override this and continue defaulting to X11 if they feel like it suits them better. But we want Wayland to be our official recommendation." You can search "Plasma6: Better defaults" if you want to read the full blog, you also have a Phoronix article talking about this change.

Wayland considers window positioning and display/monitor dimensions priviledged properties and while there is a protocol to allow access to them, they still have not merged it for no obvious reason. So KDE cannot use its classic remembering positions and sizes. This is a massive problem for example in scientific apps with multiple windows that currently CANNOT be used in wayland thanks to that. I'm a software dev with a big thing for image analysis and AI stuff so limiting the CPU while i work would be quite dumb lol. Wayland does not implement a protocol for windows positioning on multiple windows of the same app, as far as I could follow, it is just recently they realised it is something people need.l, but needs quite a lot of work and it is not sure they will do it. Lots of complex apps, from GIMP to scientific ones, have or can work with multiple monitors at the same time. Regarding touchpad gestures, does anyone know why they don't they work on X11? Indon't find any reason for that.
@cameronbosch1213 Жыл бұрын
That's because Wayland is easier to develop 1 : 1 gestures for compared to XOrg. It requires less code and the only reason Pantheon (the Elementary OS desktop environment) used XOrg gestures was because they hasn't started Wayland support yet.

Its really tempting to buy my next laptop as a Linux default for proper support, but sadly i cannot find one with a touchscreen and 360° screen rotation, which is something i do not want to leave behind. (And still crying for not being able to try the dualscreen Yoga as its barely usable with Linux based on net)

I've been running Ubuntu on a 2017 HP Spectre x360 15" for a few years now and it works well. Not sure about the Linux compat on the newer ones.

I really wish they would implement inteli-hide for plasma panels.

I think it’s planned for Plasma 6

I just started using EndeavorOS with KDE Weird it doesn't have a GUI for the AUR...
@cameronbosch1213 Жыл бұрын
That's because the AUR isn't just binary packages; it's basically a bunch of scripts to install a package, and very few of them are binary packages!

Honestly I've come to realise that Garuda Dragonised is the only version of KDE that I like and even then there's some usual KDE+Arch base quirks like locales being a pain in the ass I'd distrohop to either that or Pop OS if I weren't in the middle of a software engineering class

It looks like a great device. I am considering a switch from Mac (MacBook Pro 16) to Linux and one of the things that puts me off is how the trackpad works, its sensitivity, utility and general feel. Apple does a great job of this - you mentioned this laptop has one of the best trackpads you've used - how does it feel day to day for scrolling, drag and click and palm rejection?

I’m in the same boat, though I really want to ditch the trackpad entirely due to RSI.

Been bingeing yours and other people's videos in perpetrating for buying a Linux laptop. You kinda had me sold on GNOME for a bit, and I was planning to go with fedora for my first Linux machine in a very long time(my precious stint with Linux was using mint maybe 5 years ago). Given the recent red hat controversies and this switch to tuxedo os, I'm curious if you'd now recommend against fedora for a Linux noob. I don't really wanna go back to mint, this time, since I kinda want to just dive into something that definitely isn't windows and learn an entirely new workflow. Btw, thanks for being the least elitist, high quality Linux content creator I've come across, so far.

Just moved to Gnome actually, after using Cinnamon for years. I'm liking the simplicity. Tried KDE and Plasma a few times, but never really liked it. Will try it again of course, tinkering is a lifestyle.

Nice setup! I like the idea of a laptop that can handle 4k video editing as well as everything else. I’m not much of a gamer but I like video editing and being able to run Python scripts quickly.

Could you do a video on installing Davinci Resolve on a tuxedo OS computer? I run the OS on a Thinkpad with an Nvidia processor, so maybe it's possible?
