@@twb0109 The culture and media we live under in neoliberal consumerist capitalism doesn't help - all the distractions of tech and social media, the constant search for dopamine stoked by the big tech that make profit from us searching for things to click on, etc makes it hard to be focused, so don't feel bad about it, it's not only about personal traits but also what the systems we live under do to us.

I switch back and forth currently, due to file-roller not being able to drag and drop... so if I am dealing with unzipping things, I switch to KDE... that being said, I feel Gnome stays out of my way and lets me do things. KDE and AmigaOS are what I use when I feel like wasting time making my desktop behave in funky ways. All DEs have their own purpose.

Fedora is planning on Wayland as default, yes. But most other distros wont. I suspect Fedora wont actually do it for the next release either, setting it as default for the first release of Plasma 6 seems a bit risky even if there are a lot of improvements over Plasma 5. I think the committee will postpone it but who knows, it's just speculation on my part.
@moussagacem8260
@moussagacem8260 Жыл бұрын
@@Qyngali No, I'm talking about KDE not Fedora, Plasma 6 will come with Wayland enabled by default and the distro would need to add themselves X11 if they want but if they only use KDE as intended by the developers it will come with the wayland compositor and X11 will not be present. "We’re going to make a very strong push for Wayland to be the default session type for Plasma 6. The X11 session will still be there of course, and distros will be free to override this and continue defaulting to X11 if they feel like it suits them better. But we want Wayland to be our official recommendation." You can search "Plasma6: Better defaults" if you want to read the full blog, you also have a Phoronix article talking about this change.

15:50 UX improvement suggestions: instead of having to go to the desktop to check performance monitors, you can add them as widgets onto the panel itself. For example, I have them next to the tray area. And even further, instead of just looking at the current CPU and RAM figures, you can configure them to be charts, and thus observe their recent trends.

Tuxedo OS left me with mixed feelings. It's like de-snappified Ubuntu (the same as Mint) with KDE, which sounds good to me, but for some reason I end up breaking things very quickly :-| I never switch power presets. I just don't see the point in bothering with the settings. IMHO, modern systems are quite adaptive by default, not wasting energy when not needed and providing sufficient performance when needed. The only thing I do is disable automatic sleep as this often causes problems. Probably my computers just don’t want to wake up (neither do I).

I have 2-19in displays. I put my task bars vertical, one on left side of the left screen, the other on the right side of the right screen. There is a menu icon, clock, file manager and desktop switcher on both task bars and some other icons on each which are not duplicated. This has worked well in both KDE and XFCE. XFCE desktop switcher has some issues when the task bar is vertical instead of horizontal.

i've been using Fedora for a close to a year now, originally with Gnome but i switched to KDE a couple months ago, I didn't think about making different power profiles depending on my use case at the moment but I might do that now at least when i'm just browsing the web and watching youtube. I'm a software dev with a big thing for image analysis and AI stuff so limiting the CPU while i work would be quite dumb lol. I wish tuxedo used a lower wattage 40 series card in the 14 inches version tho as they're very efficient. Like in the Asus Flow X13 there is a 60w 4070 which performs on par with a full wattage 4060. I'm definitely switching to a Tuxedo 14" next laptop tho as I'm not really doing anything very windows specific apart maybe from some light game making and some games that wouldn't run on windows, but nothing a quick dual boot wouldn't fix

4:35 Or go with an external GPU case in addition. But here a warning: be aware that not all window managers work well with it (low FPS). I have the same Laptop (different CPU and no dGPU) with a Razer Chroma X as eGPU case with a RX 6750XT (monitor plugged into the GPU). With Xorg (Gnome or KDE doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference) I get about 35 FPS. With KDE Wayland I get about 15 FPS (from research it seems like this will be fixed in Plasma 6, but haven't tried it). With Gnome Wayland I get about 125 to 144 FPS (depending on what I am doing).

I believe the KDE Wayland session crashing on Nvidia is because of the outdated Nvidia driver. It seems Tuxedo still uses 515 for some reason. On my laptop, I run the 530 series (currently 535) and KDE has never crashed since. Not to mention Nvidia has stated that the 545 driver update will feature tons of Wayland fixes. So hopefully more distros adopt it once it finally comes out.

Wayland considers window positioning and display/monitor dimensions priviledged properties and while there is a protocol to allow access to them, they still have not merged it for no obvious reason. So KDE cannot use its classic remembering positions and sizes. This is a massive problem for example in scientific apps with multiple windows that currently CANNOT be used in wayland thanks to that. Tuxedo Laptops btw use a "whitelabel" kit. You can get the same laptops, windows based, by XMG and other brands. At least thats true for their water-coolable laptops. And those are really hard to beat.

Correct. They use Tongfang or Clevo rebrands.

@@cameronbosch1213 yea the name wouldnt come to mind when I wrote that comment. But again, theres a need to point out that this isnt bad but the exact opposite - those laptops are built great and easy to service.

Just moved to Gnome actually, after using Cinnamon for years. I'm liking the simplicity. Tried KDE and Plasma a few times, but never really liked it. Will try it again of course, tinkering is a lifestyle.

I get it, you are French, but I am surprised you don't have a home lab setup. You should get your Jeff on (Geerling or the other Craft Computing one) and have a dedicated server with either nextcloud or a NAS and hypervisor and remote into it with your laptop. That way you can be the best French man you can be and still have full access to your files and processing power to render videos.

The problem with my System 76 adder laptop WS is that it generates so much heat that my AC can barely keep up and makes me sweat a bit while its on. I would not have known that from from the reviews, which i notice, don't really talk about heat output on laptops anymore.

Hmm, not sure about that headphone thing. Recently worked at a HiFi shop. Had lots of interesting issues in general with ARC and EARC. Also on KDE (CachyOS) at home. I just run a USB DAC at home for my 2-channel audio. HDMI can be a ****.

I know tuxedo provided the laptop but did you give framework any thought? I’m curious why you would choose a tuxedo over framework. Also I wish you luck with kde and external gpu setup. I had a lot of issues that aren’t fixed until 6 and that’s with an amd graphics card.

Probably a geographical issue. This guy is from France and Framework is an US company, so shipping and tariffs are a possible issue.

I’d use my laptop (an Alienware with a Radeon dGPU and APU) as a daily driver if eGPUs didn’t run worse than the dedicated graphics that are on the laptop I bought, and if I could charge it and have power for it through the same cable (rather than needing to spend $150 on another 240W power supply). Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 does not provide enough Bandwidth for a good experience, and replacing one of the M.2 drives with an Oculink port I heard has some problems with hotswapping. Tried a makeshift eGPU setup and it kept conflicting with Bitlocker as well. Yeah, syncing files and settings remains a headache, especially on Windows.

I used Ubuntu MATE LTS for around 8 months and recently switched to Ubuntu 23.04 Lunar Lobster. But I installed KDE and currently using it as the default desktop environment. I like it better than gnome. My experience with mx linux xfce was below average and ubuntu mate was also not properly working on my laptop, there were constant errors and unexpected showdowns during my time using it. Ubuntu gnome and KDE are fully compatible with my laptop.

Separate Syncthing shares with compression enabled (unless the data doesn't compress, hence separate shares), and you'll just have to accept the share from the laptop when you create the share on the desktop. I understand the wish for a do-it-all, though, as I also rather pay extra to have a laptop that can do everything more-or-less; all my gaming laptops have been in use for many years on end, only getting a new one when the current one is fucked beyond usage AND there's one that doesn't suck in practice AND has a reasonable pricing, and my desktops were always very neglected.

Been bingeing yours and other people's videos in perpetrating for buying a Linux laptop. You kinda had me sold on GNOME for a bit, and I was planning to go with fedora for my first Linux machine in a very long time(my precious stint with Linux was using mint maybe 5 years ago). Given the recent red hat controversies and this switch to tuxedo os, I'm curious if you'd now recommend against fedora for a Linux noob. I don't really wanna go back to mint, this time, since I kinda want to just dive into something that definitely isn't windows and learn an entirely new workflow. Btw, thanks for being the least elitist, high quality Linux content creator I've come across, so far.

But I use more screens , in all 4. build, 2x wide monitors liku You and one tv 55. All works but i must plug LAN by the usbc and tv by hdmi and also POWER cable because all this stuff don;t work by tunderbolt together.

It looks like a great device. I am considering a switch from Mac (MacBook Pro 16) to Linux and one of the things that puts me off is how the trackpad works, its sensitivity, utility and general feel. Apple does a great job of this - you mentioned this laptop has one of the best trackpads you've used - how does it feel day to day for scrolling, drag and click and palm rejection?

I've got an InfinityBook Pro 16 gen 8 and I'm really happy with it... but I don't like TuxedoOS. Of course, I should mention that I just don't like KDE either. Gnome runs absolutely lovely on it (on Arch) and the apps are still way ahead of KDE. And so is the consistency in design.
