13:56 Tuxedo OS on a Tuxedo PC
Tuxedo OS is a semi-rolling release Linux distro that Tuxedo makes, and is freely available to download on any computer.
Tuxedo OS comes with KDE plasma, it gets rid of snaps, they have their own repos for additional drivers and apps, they have a hybrid rolling release model for the desktop and drivers, they have their own custom kernel with better hardware support, and a few very useful utilities.
The repos contain their custom kernel, which include patches that they tested and implemented before the mainline kernel, so newer hardware works better. The fixes they develop themselves are also mainlined of course.
The Tuxedo OS repos include more up to date drivers, they have firmware for their own devices, they have packages for web browsers that Ubuntu only provides as Snaps, and for a few up to date apps that aren't in the Ubuntu repos, or are outdated.
While the base system and base packages are from Ubuntu, they ship drivers, a linux kernel, and the KDE plasma desktop on a rolling release model, which means you're always getting the latest versions of your KDE apps and desktop, and a recent kernel version, and the associated drivers.
Tuxedo OS also embarks the Tuxedo Control center. It's an open source graphical app that lets you set your power profile, between a few presets, like extreme powersave, high performance, quiet, and more. You can also change the battery charging options to improve the battery's lifespan.
Tuxedo OS enables os-prober. In the boot options, you'll find a web based reinstall option as well.
The Stellaris 16 is the latest entry in the Stellaris line. It comes with a 16:10 2560 x 1600 panel, that has very vivid colors, 350 nits of brightness, and perfect viewing angles. It can also refresh at 240hz.
You also get a core i9 13900HX, which is a 16 core, 32 threads CPU, that can go up to 5.4Ghz.
browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/...
You can pair that with an RTX 4060 Mobile, or up to a 4090,.
RAM options go from 16 GB of 4800Mhz DDR5 to 64 gigs of 5600mhz DDR5, and for storage, you can get up to 2 4terabytes PCIE 4 SSDs.
In terms of ports, you get 2 USB A 3.2gen 2 ports, one USB A 3.2 gen 1, a full size SD card slot, a headphone jack,, the ports for the Aquaris cooling sytem, HDMI 2.1, 2.5 gigs ethernet, and Thunderbolt 4.
The keyboard is really excellent, with good key travel, and a quiet sound. You can also get it with a mechanical keyboard.
THe touchpad isn't glass, but it's very smooth, even though it's really small for this form factor.
Speakers are decent, with a good amount of bass, but they'll start saturating at max volume. They're bottom firing so if you place the laptop on a soft surface, you'll muffle them easily.
And the mic and webcam are potato quality as is unfortunately too often the case.
As per battery life, you get a 99Wh battery, on the powersave mode, using the integrated GPU, it lasted for 7 hours with youtube videos playing in a loop over wifi in Firefox, with the display at 240hz.
So, on a Tuxedo computer, you get a few cool things on top of the default Tuxedo experience.
You can control the color and brightness of the keyboard backlight, you can control the webcam, and its resolution, framerate, brightness, contrast, exposure, dynamic range, color balance.
TOMTE automatically recognizes the model you're using, and it checks for the drivers and packages that will give you the best experience.

Tuxedo OS is looking solid. I'm a happy camper on Fedora, but if things there ever went belly up then this is something I'd consider switching to. Good to see them maintaining their own kernel and Mesa driver. The ones in Ubuntu can get a tad ancient.

that is interesting. in open source software and development, i remember reading YEARS ago, like 2010, on Ubuntu's site, how their development works, with graphical charts and how many patches are pushed to upstream. so, i think every downstream project can and should benefit their upstream. i wonder if the kernel and mesa driver they maintain will get pushed upstream to benefit Ubuntu and Debian, or will it just stay there in Tuxedo OS only. i hope their great changes are contributions which will help everyone in the free OS sphere, including Arch, Fedora, Opensuse, etc.

Great. Another distro to think about just a week after I chose to delete Microsoft Malware OS... Emmm, sorry, Windows 11, from my laptop and install Mint - which took me several days, since Acer has an evil, evil BIOS system that made it IMPOSSIBLE to move smoothly. Even now, after several attempts at starting over, it's still buggy and laggy for some unknown reason, despite working great on both my other PCs.

I have an Acer Aspire 5 and used a USB flash drive with Ventoy to try out several distros before committing it to a Linux one. ZorinOS didn't work at all for me but PopOS! installation was pretty seamless. Surprised to hear that Linux Mint had installation issues. It's making me think that it would be great to have a resource where people who have specific brands of laptops/desktops can easily find out which distros are most compatible.

I actually used this before I messed around too much and decided to use KDE neon for further playing around. It's pretty good, it's tough deciding whether I like Tuxedo OS or KFocus more. I do really like the powerplan app they have, and their automated power adjustment feels like the only one that works without major compromises. I think it's a solid alternative if you don't align with Kubuntu, Neon, or KFocus. I honestly just wish that they also have FerenOS theming/UX options but it's clear that it's... not easy to accomplish. If I could have that and have an immutable version of Tuxedo OS I'd probably use it full-time on my laptop

Thanks for covering this. I didn't know much about this distro at all prior to this video. Looks to be a solid KDE Plasma focused distro which as a fan of that DE myself I can appreciate. Though I do wonder how much they actually need Kubuntu for. If they're doing rolling release on their kernel and driver updates, KDE, and their own config utilities, I wonder if they eventually plan on just cutting over to their own base system at some point.

Okay, I tried it a bit and I generally liked it a lot. It really feels like kubuntu without all the stupid things from Canonical (or like Mint with KDE, if you wish). I would not say that the system is bloated, but there are a couple of extra utilities from Tuxedo (useless on my hardware). They can be removed, but I've noticed that this removes some kernel modules, so be careful. Also, shortcuts from the menu remain and they need to be removed manually, which is sad. For some programs, German language packs are installed by default, and I had to manually install some Russian langpacks (for example, for Firefox). Changes in KDE Plasma are not significant, easy to change to the stock state. Almost all the necessary programs are in the repositories. And yet I miss AUR. I broke everything (okay, not everything, just Dolphin) pretty quickly. But this is purely my fault, a normal user should not experience this.

Well, they shipped an update that broke support for the internal(!) keyboard. Customer support told me I would have to do a BIOS update. Update: Another update rendered my machine unusable. First I could not switch to another user in the GUI. Login had no mouse support and only let me input my password for my current user. Second user was not selectable in any way. Tried several things without luck. Tuxedo support asked me to reinstall Mesa drivers. Now things got worse: Right hand side of the screen only shows every second line of pixels, and screen content is sized down to about two thirds of the screen. Tuxedo supoort tells me the only way to fix this is backing up my data and reinstalling the OS. I'm getting serious Win98 vibes. :-D

I'll use Debian 12 but change the repos from stable to testing, so I get it to be a, semi-rolling release. I consider dualbooting it besides Fedora. While Fedora will remain my primary system. Although I just switched recently. I always wanted to go with a, RHEL related distro. Still when I occasionally need a Debian base but want the semi-rolling release Tuxedo is at the top of the list.

Big issue with tuxedo OS is that if you already have a linux install it wont work, The installer hangs if you reuse partitions like /home as it sets up permissions. I tried both versions and both failed to install without me having to back up my /home directory. Sure I make constant backups, but it's a lot to do just to try a distro out for a spin on real hardware. This is something no other distro I have tried has done, not even arch.

Very interesting - I install Linux on old hardware (mostly laptops) for non-techy friends and I typically choose between Mint and Pop OS - this is a definite contender going forward. I was really impressed by how Pop OS makes it super easy to install a recovery partition and to upgrade firmware on Lenovo laptops - less impressed with how crashable their Pop Shop is - but I guess all their resources are going into Rust development just now. I also get really annoyed about the "bloat" nonsense - I suspect this mostly comes from people who got used to measuring drive storage and maybe even RAM module size in MBs a while back and haven't really moved on since ;)

I went through a few steps, and then it looked like it crashed and dumped me out to the desktop. The only clue that it hadn't crashed was that it remembered my Wi-Fi. I launched the installer from the desktop, it went a bit further, and "crashed" again. Once more I was back at what looked like the beginning of the installer. Things are usually ported upstream, but it can take time until it’s merged + I would bet most people run older kernels anyway (like me) so it will take a while until they benefit from these changes. Other changes may break things for some devices so they may be doomed to forever be outside the main kernel.

Top-spec Stellaris 16 w/ 5y warrany is $5140 + $99 shipping to US. Over 5 years (absolute minimum life given the warranty) this is $1047.80 a year or $87.32/month. Tuxedo OS looks good on a non Tuxedo PC, but I think that it really shines on their own hardware. I'm not really convinced that I'd use Tuxedo OS over another KDE distro like Fedora on non Tuxedo hardware, but that's just me. Their hardware looks really good and with a tailored Tuxedo OS (pun intended) it makes for a good out of the box "it just works" experience. Given the higher price point of their hardware though, I'm kinda expecting to have an easy premium experience with the device, but it seems like a solid brand.

My advice: learn how each distro did what they did, and slowly try to copy it. A lot of the resources can be replicated, it's just a hassle a lot of the time, but once you've done it? It's beautiful. This satisfaction is why I love ublue-os, NixOS, and VanillaOS.

@FengLengshun
@FengLengshun Жыл бұрын
@@xeiAiex I wouldn't really say they're all the same. Sure, it's all about packages and configs. But getting those packages installed in an efficient manner can often be annoying compared to just starting with a base that's close to what you want. In addition, there's the matter of default repos - some distro have a different default repo, with its own versions and list of packages, and once you start mixing repo then you start to deal with dependency hell. Sometimes it really does worth it to switch to a specific distro to get specific experiences.

I have a Tuxedo laptop with Fedora as that's my first choice of a distro. I've been using it for more than 5 years. Keyboard backlighs work half of the time. No, much less then half... Lately I've just given up on them. (I know they work because they light up at boot time (and sometimes after their stupid driver install), and recently I bought a new keyboard from them). I'm not a fan of using some memory hogging control centres either, that's something from Windows. I think that a real Linux laptop must have everything built in the kernel. Probably Thinkpads are more Linux friendly than this. I would love to love Tuxedo, but it really feels like just a laptop with Linux slapped on it with some workarounds (and "Custom OS") to make it work. Not something built for Linux.

I've been using Tuxedo OS on a Tuxedo laptop for a while and generally really like it. My only issue is that the graphics will sometimes bug out horribly after suspending (which it'll do by default after some time of inactivity). This will often show the contents of your programs even before you've unlocked the device, which is absolutely unacceptable from a privacy and security standpoint, especially in a business context. I understand that it's unlikely that Tuxedo wrote the code which causes the bug (probably something with the combination of Nvidia and KDE) but that's no excuse, as Tuxedo are the ones that chose to combine these technologies into a package they charge a fair amount of money for. Some fix or workaround for this is absolutely and urgently needed. Other than that, I can only recommend Tuxedo.

However, I contacted Tuxedo support about my issue asking for the part number for a new fan and they gave me all the necessary information to get the right part and fix it myself. They're really helpful and friendly. I can't recommend this company enough. Other than my fan wearing out everything else has been stellar. Note that I've had this laptop since March 2021 and I took it to campus a lot for my master's degree. Something might have happened with it in my bag all the time.

I'm not sure if the Framework 16 will have a 4090 option right out of the box. So if you need that, I'd say to go now for the Tuxedo one. You can voice your concerns directly to them, by email (as I tried) or by other means - Nick suggested Mastodon. Maybe they do have some contracts with some service repair in each country, I would expect that to make more sense. Given how wrong shipping in general can go, you might get your laptop more damage from the overseas transport than you began with.

By the way I know it is hard to test a Linux distro in its entirety because there are problems that can be experienced on one computer and then it's completely fine on the others. But I think it would be good when doing a distro test to add maybe some hardware/software problems or features in this case swipe gestures. In another case it could be no gui application to change the GPU that you are using. But the point of this comment is to say I think it would be good to make a small list of the hardware that would interact with the software whether it be GPUs touch screens touchpads stuff like that and I know that you don't have a touch screen laptop. but you get my point anyways have a great day
