If you don't buy your own house at Halifax, the average rent is a bit higher than Toronto. The vacancy rate is 1%. You will know how hard it is while you search for a rental unit. The cost of a decent house would cost around 600k. Anything below this would either cost you more or a lot of work need to be done after your purchase. I am diving into the Halifax house market for almost 3 years. My suggestion would be not moving to Halifax if you are in Toronto. The groceries, gas, power, oil and etc are expensive compared with Toronto

I would not suggest moving from Toronto to Halifax from a cost prospective if you plan to rent indefinitely. The key cost difference is the cost of buying a house and mortgage payments. For a 5 year fixed, 30 year amortization with 20% down (necessary over $1M), an average Toronto detached would cost $6,637.39/ month. With the same downpayment, an average Halifax detached would cost $2,716.53. A difference of $3920.86 per month. This is pretty well an order of magnitude more than the increased costs you mentioned. Also, most people can't qualify for the mortgage necessary for a average detached Toronto home. So Halifax would be the only option is that respect. Decent detached homes here start at about $550k. Decent semi-detached start at about $450k.

Just wondering if your assumption is the annual incomes remain unchanged if a person or a family move from Toronto to Halifax. There's a big gap in annual incomes for the same position in these two cities.

My income figures are all median after-tax household incomes from the most recent census. This is the most objective measure possible. @@uklae2009
