I spent the first 15 years of my life living off the grid, growing up in rural North Dakota, in the 1940-50's. No running water, no electricity, carrying water from the pump to the basement where my mother heated it on a kerosene stove so she could wash clothes. Our light was kerosene lamps hung from the ceiling. The old Kelvinator fridge stood in the corner and kerosene created the heat that created the magic to cool its contents. Coal kept the house warm during the winter. We'd drop little branch tips from the Christmas tree on its red glowing dome, the aroma of pine permeated the house. My mother baked bread, roasted our meats in an oven heated by wood. Atop the shelf on the stove an old Nash's coffee can held bacon drippings which greased the pancake griddle. Bacon sizzled in the old cast iron frying pan and eggs bubbled in the bacon fat. When the eggs came out, we'd drop a slice or two of home baked rye bread in the drippings, plop it on our plates and give it a sprinkling of sugar. I can still taste the deliciousness of eggs, rye bread and grease. Of course the stent in my heart probably is a result of that tasty pleasure. Anyway, you kids go for it. You certainly seem to be eating healthier and your 'off the grid' surely has more benefits than I enjoyed but that's progress. You know, I envy you, not jealously but with loving appreciation to live as freely as possible. I'll be watching from above, hopefully not from below, to see how you are doing when you reach my age. Oh, did I tell you I'm looking at 80. Like you, my life started at Camp White, Oregon in the 1940's. Best of luck, give 'em hell and may you both have a long wonderful life.

Next build a moat or wide ditches surrounding the land edges. Winter time push the snow into the moat and summer time it will be damp and when there's a forest fire it breaks the fire under the soils n roots. Also can retain water for plants.

@SimpleLivingAlaska6 жыл бұрын
We downsized from our last place and ended up selling quite a bit but I couldn't imagine not having a shed or like you said a storage unit for extra items.
@Rick_Sanchez_C137_5 жыл бұрын
A storage locker in town sucks to pay for, but it is nice having certain things stored in town... I have 24/7/365 access to a storage locker in Ketchikan, and it is nice that when I get there on my boat (an open skiff) I can store boat equipment and not have to leave it in the boat. Also, able to leave expensive tools in storage when not there instead of worrying about expensive stuff left at my camp (cabin not done yet, tried to retire last year, but was promoted and I need to stay three years to retire with that pay). Hopefully the first building will be complete before summer is over; I’m recovering from a surgery right now but hoping to be able to go up for three to five weeks before I have to be back in September. Nice vid, nice cabin, but maybe needs another window cut into a wall downstairs, and either a window upstairs or a skylight (one of those expensive skylights that opens, makes the cabin into a tree stand). A great place to start, but don’t be afraid to make changes. Good luck!
