That water heating system is the same I used when I first built my place! Except I had kids so I'd fill up a rubbermaid tub and bathe them in it. The stupid part is that our house is so well insulated that I never had the stove burning super hot, so it would take about a half day to heat water. I pretty much kept my biggest pot on the stove full of water at all times. Same sink water system too! Well, at least after the first 6 months when I literally just had dish pans and emptied them outside the door... that was the worst. I was never so glad to haul a bucket of water as I was when I finally got a sink base with a bucket underneath.

for the shelves above the wash basin.. a suggestion, add a thin wood inch high to the entire length of the shelves, this gives your jars and plates n tin cans the stability if there's an earthquake or if your pulling something from the back and accidentally drop the front piece onto the kitchen table.

Very interesting. Have you tried just sponge baths? My friend who did not want to repair his upstairs bathroom, washed with cloths for years. When he retired, he fixed the leak and floor and now can take a shower. LOL Where did you get that awesome stainless steel work table? That's precious. I can't wait to see how you'll make another storage for your food. I hope you discuss the pros and cons and the decision you'll make. I hope we don't have to wait another year before you get to that. I realize you have a short time to plant your orchards, to do anything at all. But I think building a walk in box, insulating it, could go up quickly. I also think the entrance can be from inside your cabin with a hall leading to the door. ( keep the bears from breaking in).....

great new channel just found you. When we moved to our property (this june) we were completely off grid. Our off grid shower was nothing more then heating water on a fire in a cast iron pot , a shelf built to our height on the side of our outhouse, we used a 3 gallon bucket (easier to manage to put on the shelf just over head height) the bucket has a spicket on it, 3 gallons was more then enough for the 2 of us. Looking forward to more videos! keep up the hard work!

Why not hook up a shower hose and head to a solar system. Back up generator for power. And use a handheld shower head, or fashion a conventional shower using the generator to power the water. I would think this would be so much easier after this is done and you could take a shower when ever you need to not just on shower day.

This ancient Alaskan-remote-bush homesteader offers a 1970’s HOT indoor shower (and HOT running water 24/7 -in winter) suggestion for you COOL folks to CONSIDER; first used 200 miles from the nearest road that one time HOT showered a BLM helicopter of 18 smelly overworked and under-bathed firefighters with refreshing lonnnng hot showers each ALL IN A ROW NON-STOP and we never ran out of HOT water. Plus we LOVED our hot hot 15-20 minute HOT showers after freezing hauling of wood needing splitting and at -10 to - 40 BELOW; what a nice follow-up that was. You can make this shower for about $150 + or - say $25 as a guesstimate - or lots cheaper with stuff you MAY have around. Here goes. First the parts: 1. - one shower-stall sized galvanized water cattle or goat feeding shallow bucket (lots of those used and cheap around Willow area). 2. - Either on a Costco run into Anchorage or asking a neighbor doing one anyway once whoever is in Anchorage head-over to a Beer-Brewers-Supply - was a couple of them and one VERY well stocked; get yourself a copper brewer’s coil with hose barb fittings already attached to each end; that coil is about16” in diameter but there are different sizes. OR- Amazon this from an online brewer's supply. IF available you’ll want as close to the outside diameter of your flu as you can get but of course I think the smallest Dia I’ve seen is about 12”. 3.- Two Galvanized or other “suitable” 15-20 gal containers, Galvanized Trash cans work ok but a smaller diameter taller container you can mount to the wall would work better. Don't use plastic or used 15 gal bulk-oil barrels that will rust rather quickly and with the hassle of de-oil-filming them. 4. - 2- sizes of Radiator hose, pure rubber rated for 180 hot water is best but expensive; red-pex can work too it’s just not as flexible and other alternatives from plumber types with more P-knowledge then I. A 3/4” size works good for the “feed”-run - into - the coil plus of course you’ll need a female hose fitting to attach to the male coil fitting end and a whatever attached to your cold-water-input tanks wall-mounted about 1 foot higher then the top of your wood stove or actually mount this a foot or two higher then your wash sink . And a 3/8 hose to your HOT storage wall-mounted tank as high-up and you’d like your water pressure to be. The smaller increases flow speed of the now hotter water thermo-siphening into the hot storage tank. 5.- Aluminum flashing NOT Galvanized as it reflects heat better. ALSO well rinsed used Transmission coolers also work and just lie flat on your stove top but then you can’t place a coffee or stew pot OR steamed brown bread pot on your stove top. Since your obviously full of common-sense (BOTH of you) the other parts needed will become obvious as you progress. Assemble: You will NOT need any pumps this all works by thermo-siphen is one term for it anyway, we’ve always used. HOT water rises cold descends - your system will cycle effortlessly BUT you will need a top on your HOT storage to prevent over-humidifying your cabin - and a gate-valve to shut off the cold input water or any other idea that will work because your system WILL in probably an hour more or less convert your HOT storage into boiling hot meaning STEAM - you need to stop at that point shut-off cold input the coil will steam-out to empty and be just fine as empty. (you'll need a tall small dia vent-pipe somewhere AFTER your cold shut-off otherwise the vacume created by vacating steam will collapse that section of pipe - or rubber in which case it won't matter and you won't need the vent-pipe but it works better with a vent pipe (with a check valve). You’ll also need hot and cold lines to a mix valve over your feed or farm-water “shower-Stall-Pan” and some cpvc to create a circular shower curtain rod for guests into modesty all I’m sure self-explanatory to you. Dis-assemble your heat-stove flu and lay the “large-diameter-enough copper-coil over the flue opening and to be better fabricate an aluminum floor for where the coil hangs over the edge of your wood-stove top. Re-attach your flue-exhaust and the coil is now wrapped around your HOT flue and construct an alum. flashing enclosure around the coil totally enclosing it as much as possible. Finally - maybe a small wall hole for a drain hose that runs a good long run away from cabin or otherwise creatively deal with that obvious problem - not hard - for folks with common-pioneer-sense (rare these days). Run two more hot and cold lines to your sink which probably drains into a 5 gal pail you empty daily or more often. If you don’t really enjoy this shower I will show-up and bore you to death with typical highly exagerrated Alaskan BS providing you provide the traditional Pilot-Crackers and Jam and Tea or Coffee. Cheers. (or maybe some of your Mead?) Just kidding!
