Moving Logs With A Kubota That's Way Too Small

There was a pile of logs at the bottom of the driveway that were leftovers from the logging here in Greenfield, New Hampshire. They were the perfect firewood... What better way to move them up to the house where I could cut them, than with a tiny Kubota tractor that wasn't designed to skid logs at all and a home made log binder chain!

What are you thinking?! It's only March!!! We have at least 2 storms to get through!! Your driveway is looking really good for mud season. You have your own skiddah. Haters are gonna hate. You're just wicked New England. You used what you had on hand and got the job done.

I've been using my BX2380 to skid big logs too, it works great! As the dealer told me, this small tractor can do anything, you just might have to take a few more trips ;)

Part of the fun of this stuff (IMHO) is dreaming of new attachments, but in the meantime improvising with what we have to complete the tasks that need doing! Way to get it done Jack. Loved the interaction with your little apprentice! 👍😎

The harbor freight quick hitch works well for skidding. I use the top hook to attach to and voila. Only real pain is making sure the logs don’t beat into my rear pto or anything else back there. Our poor BXs don’t ever get the credit they deserve lol

Drag the logs into the open from the forest. Dont move or touch the wood anymore, cut n split right there. Put the spit wood into the metal bin used for industrial liquid. (IBC Totes) Put forks on the tractor and carry the Bins up to your house when you need them. The less you touch the wood, the better. Dont waste your time using pallets.
@TheMindfulHomestead

The issue was they couldn’t stay where they were, so dragging them up made sense.

Clever use of a box blade. I see a recipe for disaster pulling off the pile to get started. Tearing up your drive is the least of your worries. If a log but digs in, that tractor's front will come up and over faster than a snake bite. I use a geared tractor for skidding, in that context, my foot never leaves the clutch. I have not established a habit for that,as yet, with the hydro BX. I suggest you go to one log at a time. Be prepared for more sharpening with all the dirt ground in. Cut from the clean side of the log. Be well. Chris

Down here in Missouri, we call that "Redneck Engineering". You sure you don't have family roots down here? LOL It worked and it worked well, so the armchair advisers can jut live with it. I do agree on your snow forecast. I put our snowblower away and within a week, we got more snow.

Small tractors are more than capable of doing big things. You just have to take 1 or 2 trees at a time instead of 3 or 4. Horsepower isn’t your limitation in this application, it’s machine weight. Holding the ends of the logs up on the 3 point put weight where you need it: on the rear axle. I’d have done it too!

Maine forestry department recommends skidding logs top end first as it puts less load on the back of your tractor. Safer and more efficient.

It worries me to see a young father, yanking logs off a pike like that. One thing I do is draw backwards at times. Perhaps you could use the bucket with grab hooks and chain to position the log and, then do your box routine, on level ground.
