I love your advice about how not every cry is urgent! This is the difference between a crunchy mom with only two kids who will not say no to their child ever and in response to everything immediately versus a mom of 8 who knows that patience is a virtue that must be built like a muscle!

Three kids in and I probably ignore more then I should... but it's not as eerking at it was with the 1st ( and she's an amazing kid )

Honestly, when there's more, you can send even a toddler to smile at the baby until you can get to them. My almost 3 year old loves pushing the baby in their stroller and make them laugh when I need a minute to finish up my task. The older ones aren't as eager but they can also hold him for 2 minutes so I can use the bathroom (he's very heavy so they can't manage more than that yet)

Yes! I have four and I'm learning this slowly! 😂 But I'm so much less guilt ridden about a little time crying than I was with my first. And yes, I'm letting older kids help plenty. It's all good for them!

Crunchy has nothing to do with this

@Joraelfa I shouldn't have used an adjective. I can see how that comes off as judgemental. I had an idea in my head and "crunchy" came to mind.

I have such admiration and respect for you! You are the Proverbs 31 woman come to life. I am single, your mother’s age and have no children. I do work a very intense full time job which I love. I know it’s not wise to compare but whenever I feel overwhelmed by all of my daily tasks I get stronger thinking of you and all you are and all you do with a husband, lots of beautiful children, moving, cooking from scratch and running your You Tube channels. I know exactly what you mean about the internet. I approach it the same way you do but I am thankful for authentically kind and wise young women like you that are here. I am very grateful that there is wholesome content like this to enjoy. Merry Christmas!

My favorite books to read are historical fictions...Biblical but also pioneer days. Some of the questions you answered today regarding guilt towards child rearing would have been laughed at by the women of old. When I home schooled my children, I remember reading a statistic that said your child will receive more one-on-one time in one day of home schooling than they will all year in a traditional school. So yes Lisa, you are right, moms need to rid themselves of this self-inflicted guilt. Please keep getting that message out. And my son's last baby word was "mallela" (vanilla). It's still called that for me to this day. Thanks for another enjoyable Q&A.

You talking about your experience putting yourself on the internet made me wanna cry. I'm praying for you and your family. You and your sisters have changed the way I operate in my house...my rhythm... my cooking and baking practices... it has all created more joy for me and less stress as I have learned from you all to thoroughly enjoy my homemaker life. Merry Christmas! 🎄

Really enjoyed this Q&A. I am 67 years old and I have three children. I raised them with my husband in Iowa and I always potty trained in the summer. And I only kept the baby book on my first born. Didn’t have the time with the other others and I don’t feel bad at all. Because I have wonderful pictures and memories.

I visited our house as it was being built almost daily- I was able to ask any questions and correct some things that would have been a bigger problem later. I would also try to collect the majority of your doors and fixtures ahead of time to basically pay for it once and even to avoid changing things out later. Moving a second time in a year, it will be very helpful to get the majority of all projects finished by the time you move in- I’m really happy for you and your family. Merry Christmas 🎄

Merry Christmas from the middle of Nebraska! This was a great video Lisa. I've noticed too that mothers these days feel the need to constantly entertain the kids. Kids need to figure out how to play....kids have SO much "stuff, toys, things" and yet, they say they are bored! I love all your practical advice!! Blessings to you and yours!!

I completely agree! I do not remember my parents entertaining me on purpose on a daily basis. I mean we took day trips, went to eat out and took vacations but we made our own fun on common ordinary days using that thing called an imagination!

Practical "baby book" idea: keep a quote journal of the hilarious things your toddlers say. We've kept this up over a year now, and it's amazing and we laugh out loud every time we look back at the book. All we do is, when they say funny things, I tell my husband "grab the book" and write it down. It's maybe once a month when we actually write them down.

I did this (40 years ago) when my daughter began talking and continued it with our son and also my grandson! My daughter called rabbits “ hopping’ downs” because of Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail. Her son, my grandson called hand sanitizer (2020) “hanitizer”. Now I can’t say that word without stopping first before I speak. Those sweet, innocent moments go by so quickly and you think you’ll always remember the words, but you forget. When I read them I crack up! Thank you for sharing your idea!

Rental properties are a great thing for young couples to build wealth and future income for retirement. You don’t realize the potential of them until retirement years roll around and they are supplementing SSI income. We a bought a few from 1990-2002 and rehabbed them over the years then in 2008 bought a run down rural foreclosed home on acreage in another state. We worked on this home for 12 years and still worked our regular jobs for most of the time while we paid for the renovation (without financing) which we did 95% of ourselves and scavenged most of the kitchen, including appliances, cabinets for the entire house, We wouldn’t change a thing except maybe to buy a few more and buy a multi unit before our first single family house. This would have been a better jumping off point in hindsight since we wouldn’t have had to sell our first house to buy the second property. One rental is a small seasonal vacation rental which we maintain and manage ourselves. We learned how to renovate properties out of necessity starting in 1985 on our first personal residence. Rates were 11.5% then and we didn’t have any money for a down payment so we ended up with a fixer. That’s where it all started! We retired early debt free all thanks to rental real estate and DIY renovations. The sooner one can become debt free, the easier it is to buy more property.

As a mom of 5, I too don’t understand the guilt of the time spent with the first as opposed to the next ones. Only mom is keeping score. Soon everyone interacts together. 2nd….my ADULT children are wanting the baby books and what they did etc. Of course one difference is my phone wasn’t a camera when the older three where young. There wasn’t digital way to track memories. Just a thought. Great tips on motherhood, Lisa. Merrry Christmas Lisa and family!!!!

So grateful for your comments on baby books! We have 8 as well and I feel so sad that I haven’t done more with pictures and baby books but there is just no way to live the present well and document everything for 8 kids. When I had just three I got a notebook for each one and I printed pictures and wrote little stories about them from time to time. A toddler got his hands on them and ripped out every single page! Tragic. But like you said, who has time to go back and look at those??

Been in my house 1 year this month. Similar process you’re doing. Purchased the land years in advance, designed our floor plan, built a new house with old home character. (Doesn’t look as old as I may have wanted, but it’s apart of the compromise with DH.) We visited everyday when weather and time allowed. Yes, stay close and voice what you want. Keep and eye on EVERYTHING. Our GC is great, but a sub or two tried to do some no nos. It’s a long process, but take the time to dream and watch it come true. It’s awesome!

I’ve always envisioned having a big room in a house with a washer and dryer in the middle with big closets all around the room, each with a dresser and hanging rods, a chair and curtain. These are dressing rooms with each persons clothing! So all of the clothing is in one big room! Haha, probably not very practical for resale I guess!

I have four kids and baby wear them all, I figured out after my second that I have to teach my toddler to either nap without me having to rock them down, or I just let them fall asleep whenever and wherever they are tired. Or we all just lay on the bed and when my toddler falls asleep I sneak out with the baby.

I only have one baby, and I'm not doing a baby book 😂 I think I received 2 of them at my baby shower, so I really don't have an excuse. It stresses me out, and the book asks too many questions. Like, "What was the price of gas when your baby was born?" I might take a picture of her and write the main milestones on the back of the photo. That seems more manageable as I grow my family. Thank you for reminding us that we don't have to feel guilty over these silly things!

I’m older than you are - but we will never go back to owning rental properties. The furnace never stops working at a convenient time, nor does the water heater spring a leak except on Christmas Eve or some other day when you have plans. It became too much for us, and we sold them. We wish you the best as you continue with your plans, and advise you to have a maintenance person on call.

It is sad that we’ve developed technology that can connect people to teach and learn great info yet some people turn the opportunity into a channel for resentment and negativity. That doesn’t have to ruin freedom for others. It’s wise to follow your conscience and lead according to your values. Too much information and sharing is a sign of the times. I remember realizing years ago that editing skills were increasingly necessary as we became inundated with info and stuff. ❤

In the grand scheme of things most of the pressures on moms are irrelevant. The other overdone thing are pictures~hundreds for each child in the family. Of course some are important and a meaningful record. But having so many lost on phone data is a waste and unappreciated. It’s a balance of living in and not missing the moments because you are so busy recording it.
