I have seen in person the King Tiger #213 in La Gleize, Belgium. It's quite an impressive machine! It's amazing how far advanced the Germans were in tank design.

I would say they were ahead of us practically in every field....In the last 2 years of war Germany was practically alone facing the whole planet, fighting on 3 fronts (East, West and South) while at home they were carpet-bombed every single day and night....That attrition took a heavy toll on the country's limited natural resources and led it to a foreseeable defeat, but it took 6 years and the combined effort of the major industrial countries and their overwhelming manpower to defeat them.. In a one on one war, the Wehrmacht would have been unstoppable.

I saw this tank and the Tiger 1 at Aberdeen, MD back in the 80s. They were sitting outside rusting away. Great to see this piece of history restored and set up in a proper facility. Can't wait for the museum to open. I see a trip to Georgia in my future.

I never made it to the Museum at Fort Benning Georgia during my Basic Training there and could only dream of going back there to see it. My Buddies said they seen a comment of My Uncle 2nd Lt John Roslick who was Killed in Combat April 6,1942 Bataan Philippines 🇵🇭 and is listed MIA when they got to walk through the Museum

Too disappointed, we lost Aberdeen meuseum here. Went there many times too. The tanks were kept in preatty bad condition there, but I see outside of painting, they are still not drivable there either.

I spent ten very fortunate years on Aberdeen Proving Grounds with the Ordinance Museum as my playground and classroom. Armor, particularly German armor, became my love. The scope, scale and innovation still blow me away. Thanks for preserving engineering from an important time in history.

Please tell us which helicopters are capable of transportation of M1A tanks. Can't find any US helicopters that could lift more than 44,000 pound. Our largest transport aircraft, the C5A, can only carry a maximum of two Abrams at a time due to weight limits.

Way back in 2000 I visited the Patton Museum where this King Tiger was on display and happened to have a lengthily discussion with the curator there about the vehicle. At one point I asked him how easy it was to tow this thing and, if I remember correctly, he said (semi-jokingly), "towing wasn't a problem except that every time we wanted to go in one direction it wanted to go in the other direction." --- seems that things haven't changed!

Towing one tank by another or a different vehicle is a whole lot easier when you remove the universals from the sprockets leading to the transmission. Then each track can move independently and there is no damage to the transmission or engine.

Was this particular KT moved to the Patton Museum (Ft Knox) at some point? I visited it in the late 70s in High School at Aberdeen a couple of times. It wasn't at the Patton Museum in 1981...

@@Replicant9900 Sometime in the late 1990s (I think 99) the army shipped the King Tiger from Aberdeen PG in Maryland to Fort Knox Kentucky. The staff refurbished the vehicle and placed it on display in their indoor museum. Interestingly, they had a number of running WW-II AFV at that time including a Jagdpanzer-IV/70 (ie. Panzer-IV/70(V)), an original Jagdpanzer-38 (so called Hetzer), Swiss G-13, and a diesel powered M3 Stuart. All of them were in beautiful condition (the M3 looked like it had just come off the factory floor). Unfortunately these vehicle were subsequently sent to Fort Benning GA sometime in the late 2000s where, as far as I can see, they deteriorated pretty badly in an outdoor setting for almost a decade. It's nice to see that the current staff seem to be refurbishing them again. However, it doesn't look like the vehicle's I mentioned above are in running condition anymore, but I may be wrong.

In 1980 my Opa went to Aberdeen to see the XM1 tank during a military day. My Opa was in the 8th Panzer Division as a Panzerjager. We actually saw a Panzerjager 4 L/70 sitting there. The same vehicle he fought in. He walked over and softly touched it like an old friend. I could see him go back in time. His eyes got misty. He looked for a Marder (his other fighting vehicle) but the spot it was suppose to be in was empty.

There is also King Tiger 231 standing outside a small museum in La Gleize, Belgium. It was left there by its crew when a lucky shot cut off the gun barrel. Too heavy to move I guess and blowing it up wasn't an option, too many houses close-by.

It doesn't take that much effort to pull or move a tank even a big one as long as you don't have too many to handle at any one time or if you are working from interior lines.

I went thru Armor OCS in 1967-68 and then back to Ft Knox for the Armor Advanced Course in 1972 and always enjoyed visiting the Patton Museum and seeing this King Tiger marveling at how big it was back in the day. When they tried to move the Jag panther cutaway ( yes we did it to ) at the war museum in London they used a aircraft tug, brought in specially to do the job, only problem was the vehicle hadn't moved for years and the polished floor didn't help either. Long storey short it was a really difficult job .The Jag Panther now live at Ducxford museum along with a wide collection of other tank and aircraft. A great place to visit as seen and used in the film Battel of Brittan.

I cannot even begin to contemplate how our tankers and tanks could defeat this beast in battle, considering what we had to work with. Even with a third of it's armor removed, it was still close to immovable. Thank you Sofi, for bringing this video to us.

One high explosive round from a 122mm D-25T is all it would take to knock one out. Also the Firefly, Pershing and Comet wouldn't have much of an issue

Lots of armor and a big gun surely are very impressive, but they don't make an effective tank. The King Tiger had the same problems as Maus, just on a smaller scale: Too big, too heavy and too underpowered to be mobile enough for effective battlefield use (10 HP/ton, Sherman and T-34 had almost 15 resp. 16). Especially if you factor in allied air power and availability of artillery support. - Its armor was often metallurgically sub-par because of late-war shortages. - Gearboxes and final drives were too weak for the Tiger II's weight and often suffered (unrepairable) failures. - The turret drive was too weak to lay the gun while the tank was sitting on too steep an incline. - It couldn't use most bridges and was a bitch to move by rail etc... It IS an impressive beast and very interesting from an engineering standpoint, but severely overrated.

That thing still looks menacing! It's a good thing they never got to make many of them... It must have been frightening for the allied soldier to see that beast on the battlefield. It was my 1st tier VIII heavy tank in WOT, and is still my favorite today. That airplane tug thing was definitely not the right tool for the job. Thanks for more great content! Please keep doing it!

@@MsJoao101 The first tanks I ever saw as a child was an M113 APC, and then just down from it was either a Patton or an M103. I can't remember which it was, but there was also a 155mm field gun on display as well. This is all at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama in the US. They also have a B-52 sitting outside bearing the name "Calamity Jane". There is also the namesake of the park moored there, the battleship USS Alabama.

Sturmpanzer IV (Brummbär) used to be on display in Munster, Germany at least, so you still have a chance. And while in the country anyway, you might want to check out the museums in Sinsheim and Koblenz for the things you never knew you wanted to see. Especially the latter used to be packed with prototypes and cutaway displays and plenty or curiosities since it's the collection of the German Army's University. 😉

probably not, it is deep inside the base unlike the other museums which were right at or outside the entrance. Seems like the military wants to use these as a recruitment tool and honestly don't give 2 shits if the public ever sees them again.

Yes, there is a plan to open the facility to the public in the future. But right now it's just some motorpool buildings.

A huge shame if not. Speaking as someone who has Bovington up the road I don’t understand why the US does not have anything equivalent. The closest are in France and Russia. Unlike aviation museums where the US are well ahead Daytona, Pensacola, Smithsonian, Seattle etc with the UK second in my view with Cosford, Duxford, Hendon and Yeovilton.

There will be public access weekends in the future. Unfortunately because of politics a decade ago, the Army wasn't given money to make this facility open to the public on a daily basis. By that I don't just mean the location on post (there are actually several Army museums on posts that allow public visitors) but also staffing to facilitate large numbers of visitors (we only have three employees currently). However, I will use my own free time and efforts to try to make this collection as available to the public as possible so they can see the history of their Armored Soldiers.

@@ridetillidie8090 unfortunately that wouldn't be the best course of action. The Tiger II, like many of our older tanks, spent decades outside at the old Aberdeen Proving Ground. We would have to replace key historical and original components to make this vehicle run.

Still wouldn't have wanted to be riding around in one, but impressive none the less. Glad this one's getting saved! I live right down the road and can't wait to be able to see it in person. That has got to be the dumbest argument I have ever heard for keeping a historical tank from being operational. Argue money (Restoration and operation) sure, but because some of the individual components might not be original? There are manure spreaders that smell better than that. Other than the maniacal purists no one gives a crap if individual parts are re-manufactured new and not the original parts made by their original governments. People want to see history live in front of them. Hear the engine, watch it run around a track, and yes hear the gun fire. Making history LIVE with operational tanks does a lot more to inspire people to think and reflect than a carved up "look inside me" static display in a climate controlled building. Rusting slowly is still rusting, boring patrons, and ultimate being relegated to the scrap heap when the money disappears. Bovington got it right with the working Tiger. You and your ilk are poison to history being relevant, inspiring, and ALIVE for everyone.

@@LCBrink I'm sorry that is your feelings on this. I can tell you I've discussed this issue with other national armor museum staff, and many if not all have agreed with my thoughts on this, given the way this condition has been treated in the past. Bovington was fortunate that their Tiger I had been taken care of so well in the years after the war. Our German pieces not so much. If you talk to most trained museum professionals, preservation is always looked as more important then getting something running just for the sake of running. People may want to see "history live in front of them" but thats not always the best thing when it comes to the profession of museum curatorship and conservatorship. That's why you don't see the Memphis Belle and other aircraft at the USAF Museum flying. You can call me "poison", but at the end of the day I know I'm doing the right thing for the artifact, and that is what really keeps it alive for generations. When I visited the AAF Museum in Danville, VA, I hugged the Tiger II there. No, no attachment to WWII German politics. Being from the Pittsburgh area, and having worked in the Homestead Steel Plant, I have a luv of cold hard steel. I luv the smell of burnt specialty steel in the morning (!), after being cut with a giant diamond-tipped "cold saw" blade. Sparks 20 feet high, a tickle in your throat (wearing ear protection!) from the ripping noise.
