Excellent advice. I'm an American that lived many years in Asia. It's not easy to move internationally. The single biggest stress you face is having enough money to live on month to month. This has to be balanced with your tolerance for risk. I like that in the video she talked seriously about the challenges and how hard it will be. It can also be very rewarding. In life there is always a relationship between risk and reward and how hard you work. Things that come easy have very little value. Things that come from hard work have great value.

i am Algerien, Native French/Arabic speaker from a French father and an Algerien Mother, i moved to Austria last year and lived there for a year, my divorce from Austria was also My divorce from My ex wife, it was a very sad, very hard, and also scary experience for me, i wasn't expecting to be honest that my journey in Austria was going to end that way, i first moved there in the begining of 2017, i was married and my ex wife was Austrian, the first thing i have noticed was People how friendly and open they was to my differences, but if the people surrounding you doesn't know you they are so cautious and very distant, i would say this might be for two reasons, to protect their cultures as many people says about austrian but also because they do not trust alot arabic people, ( they have enough in their country i understend that and i also dont trust them ), so the first problem for me was to make friends or to meet new people, the second was to find a job if you do not have A2 Level Deutsch ( A2 German in fact there are 6 levels A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 ) and when i moved first in austria i had A1 so even if i had talent in different things and i had my diplomas with me, i could not find any job better then working as a construction helper or very hard jobs that i was not used to do, this was my two mains problems and the third one was my culture was so different then the one of my ex wife and her family i could not handle all the new things and i was not able to integrate her family and we noticed that it was very difficult for me sadly my ex wife met somebody else without me knowing but i felt that distance was taking place between us i was very sad but the reality was there to remind me that it was very hard to stay there, i cameback to Algeria the cost of living here is less expensive but i would comeback to Austria one day for a visit. its a beautiful country worth visiting, that was my Austrian experience. It's not that we're distant because we want to protect our culture, at least not for most. It's more of a cultural thing, it's how I grew up at least. I'm a little distant with literally everyone, no matter if there a foreigner or a fellow Austrian. I come from a small village in Tirol, I have a loving family there and that's where I can be most intimate and open. With everyone else I'm distant, it's just how our livestyle is, it's nothing personal against foreigners, for the most part it's just who we are.

I like people like you who inform themself befor coming to Austria. it means you are willing to integrate. Learn german. Don't force your culture on Austria but don't forget you own! First find a Job than move here or you can get some troubles. Integrate! Don't stay always in the Getthos. (I mean its naturally that you will find live easier if you surrounded by people with same origin). But in the end it will be hard to integrate. Respect our culture and don't force us do join yours. Don't be dissappointed if the people will avoid you. (Don't know how to explain that properly). I mean many Austrians hate foreigners I know that. especialy in rural zones.

Not necessarily because they hate foreigners but they might find it difficult/annoying to speak high german or even english especially when hanging out with other local friends. So you might eighter not be invited in the first place or find it difficult because you are having troubles to understand. But I would definitely say: The most important thing is to learn German

Rly? Rural idiots? I don't know where you come from but here in Austria the average education level is overall the same! I and most of my famaly live in the country side and all have at least the "Matura". Except my grand parents. BTW noone said it is easy to learn german or especially the austrian slangs and besides many bigger companies search for people with a different mother language.

@Occy Do you speak german? If you are from South Tyrol and speak perfect german that wont make a difference at all. We still think of South Tyrol as a part of Austria that sadly has been taken from us. If you don't speak german or german with a clearly non-german accent of course that will make you an "immigrant". People will probably say like "oh so your family is from Austria originally? that's nice!" but if you don't completely blend in with locals of course that will make you an "immigrant". Not saying it's a bad thing do be an immigrant but people will notice.

Austrian rural school called Hauptschule is not the same as for example in Germany where it has the same name but a bad reputation and standard. You are able to do everything after Hauptschule in Austria. In Austria "rural" is in general better and it's where you find the real Austria anyway. It's only in the cities where you have classes full with eastern foreigners, lower standards and violence. Cities are the shitholes where everything bad gathers.

VIdeo is nice but some advices are just generic, here are some other important ones : - Check the paper work needed for people freshly arrived such as administrative papers mandatory for foreigners (whether EU or internationals, there is usually some foreign office where you need to register and where they give you some confirmation needed at some point) - If you plan to stay, learn your rights. Minimum salary, minimum weeks of holidays, how much is overtime paid in %, how can you be legally fired/leave your job etc, to avoid being screwed over. What is the maximum a the landlord can increase the rant in a year etc. - Do efforts to stick with German speaking people, it can be tempting to hang out with English speaking or people speaking your language but it's important not to close yourself to German language. - If you want to work, learn the language. German is too important in Europe so German speaking countries ask for it. It's not like Czech Republic or Slovakia where the language is hard and fewer people speak it, German is almost mandatory in every field.

Renting in Vienna.is expensive. After the 2008 crash, Austrians (big savers) put their savings into property, so property prices are high as are quality rentals. Food and cost if living is cheap using Billa or Höfer - Quality too. Plenty of places for good cheap eats as well as extremely expensive ones.

I was just looking at the tax rates in Austria, compared to my home country(USA), wow, it's almost double. How are you able to make ends meet and still save for retirement? I'm assuming nearly everyone rents and cannot own a home? Is it common for families to live outside of Wein and commute into the city for work?

To make ends meet: everyone is paid a living wage and price caps regulated by the state makes it affordable To own a home: Government subsidised loans and overall its cheaper than USA For retirement: we have state and company sponsored universal pension system And no it is uncommon to live outside the city and work in Wien. But some people do it. If you have the patience which we don’t then you can do it

the taxes are mutch higher than in the us if you have good payed job you will pay about 50% of your money to the state (if you calcukate everything) its not uncommen for people to work in vienna and life outside but thats mostly cause they dont want to life in the city vienna is an affordable city(depending on the district) the retirement savings are payed before you get your money if the state pension isnt enouth for you youll have to pay a for a private pension, save money or what ever houses are expensive in my era lower austria close the the capital of lower austria its about 200 000 - 400 000€ the state is a greedy bi... and i am unwilling to pay 1 cent to it if i dont have to in my proffession illicit work is commen construction, services, barbers, hookers.... nobody cares about taxes if they dont have to if you are samart you become a business man or get a good job than you pay the rent, the car, the house...with you salery but life from black money and save the rest and be "rich" or you ern so mutch that you are "rich" even if you pay the tax austria is a overtaxed corupt country where the governent wastes a lot of your money but i love it

What do you think about young people going to Austria? We're from the US, How do Austrians feel about Americans these days? Thank you for your lovely comment, I can feel how much you care for your granddaughter. Austria is truly a great place, just this month Vienna won the price of the world's most livable city :) I don't think there are any harsh feelings towards the US, some jokes about Trump every now and then but that's it. Yes German is very important if you want to integrate. Otherwise universities take a lot of work but I'm sure if you're granddaughter is motivated enough she will be more then fine :)

As an American sick of America and part German I plan on moving to Austria as well. I'm presently learning German as my 3rd language and am a highly skilled Craftsman. It just feels as if America is going downhill fast and in my opinion is not what it used to be.

For the kind of money they're taking, I could easily relo to a decent RED state like Idaho or Wyoming and find a safe place to call my own. Owning property is going to take a HUGE chunk out of your savings in Austria. I'm not too excited about paying rent for the rest of my life. I'd heard 60% of the Vienna residents live in gov't subsidized housing and that the gov't made a point of buying up gobs of real estate after the bubble in 2008. I dunno. I'm still on the fence and a little disappointed. I'm going to try and visit late Fall or early Spring to see if I can get a first had impression.

Probably depends, I would assume. Is it China bad, where they're herding people up and putting them into camps, or is it Pakistan, India, Syrian bad where your in danger because of the god you worship. Good question. If I was a gamblin' man, I'd wager it's about as bad as any Western country, ie non-existent by comparison of most racially homogenous countries in the 3rd World. Does that answer you question? Or were you asking if it's OK for you to bring your culture to someone elses country and attempt to force it onto the locals without attempting to integrate/assimilate into their society?

It's not easy if you don't speak German but it's totally doable. He might want to look eg into the startup scene since they is always need of people and German is often not needed.

I am also from Cluj, Romania, grew up here, went to school here, etc. My parents are german and hungarian so i don’t have romanian blood running through my veins, yet i love Romania and the people here with all my heart. I am currently in the process of moving to Austria for my studies, and i do understand that point of view, but i would never say that Romania is among the worse countries in the world. What does that even mean?? I do understand that it is frustrating to work here for, i worked for years at a 8h job for less than 300 euros. But that is only one side to the story. 90 % of the people can speak decent english, even the old guys. But they don't like to use it, because it is shame for them to speak another language in their own country. But of you are in the capital city, where most of the population is from immigrants , you can survive . But almost impossible in the small cities to hear someone to use english.

Where are you from? And what do you mean? We are part of the EU, we have a pretty high number of refugees and high taxes. I think the EU is a great thing and high taxes serve the community and the welfare state. I personally am not influenced or bothered by refugees at all. The Austrian government right now is right wing, so deportations and bordercontrol is forced but also social inequality is getting more problematic. Any more questions?

@Occy Of course! Italy and Austria are both part of the EU! In winter yes. Mostly around -5°C to +5°C. But due to climate change days with less than 0°C have become rare. In summer we have 25°C to 35°C. Ermmm... I guess so... There sure will be some villages. But what's the problem with turks. Yes, if you go to districts in cities with a lot of turks and imigrants (like for example "Favoriten" in Vienna) that might not be so nice but we don't have problems with some turkish families in normal towns.
