After this video was published many asked me about what brands of clothing they should buy before moving or visiting Boston, especially if they are coming from Tropical climates. I made my new winter video especially for this purpose. Check it out here kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4jFYnSDnrB7g8k. Links are included too

One more tip: don't let your pipes freeze (e.g. by turning off heat in unused rooms)--they can burst and flood! I had a roommate who was proud of economizing on the heating bills, but this ended up being a disastrous strategy.

You need to make sure there are no pipes in the outside walls. The best Ice scrapper I ever has was brass. Brass it too soft the scratch glass.

Growing up in MA, I can agree that it's mostly mental that makes winters hard. The only winter I can remember that I didn't like was when I went to California for two weeks in January. I often go to places that are even colder, like Montreal, in the winter. I have always loved the seasons in MA. I'd have friends who lived in FL or CA try to mock me for our winters. But when I focused on what makes winters great, I loved them even more. There is such a serene feeling right after a fresh snowfall. Some of the best social activities involve gathering around a fireplace. Winter sports and activities can be fantastic. Some people like to mow the lawn, I enjoy snowblowing even more. That would be an added tip for me, invest in a snowblower if you own. And, finally, I enjoy driving in the snow. Not in traffic, but just having fun in my car. I can go to the local shopping plaza and do things in my car that would get me arrested in the summer. One time I was doing massive donuts at the local mall. An officer came in and I stopped. He did a bunch of donuts and then left. It was great. I learn car control on these slick surfaces and that gives confidence in any weather. The only true issue is a lack of sunlight. Thankfully, my work has me on the road all the time...

@derbagger22 thank you for that beautiful and poetic post. Actually, I am getting a lot of calls from people relocating from CA, FL and Texas saying that they can't stand the heat anymore and I have a feeling that with global warming, many people are going to relocate to cooler climates in the next 5-10 years and even more in the future. I love to be able to cozy up with a warm blanket, the only thing that is hard for me is the April/May weather that sometimes will take too long to warm up
@McCready122 жыл бұрын
This is all good advice. I'd like to add that if you've never been around a snowblower you need to realize how dangerous they are. Don't ever stick your hand down the chute or in the front if something gets jammed. They will take your hand right off. Also the wet snow in late winter will break your back or stop your heart. Get someone to clear the snow for you.
@BostonAreaHomes2 жыл бұрын
@@McCready12 very true. Clearing the snow by hand is even worse, many older people get injured doing it, if they are not in shape, it's a pretty rigorous exercise. Pulling your back being the least of the problems you can get.

Question- What’s a donut? If you enjoy the climate then, why leave? I think two weeks of snow might be enough for me - when I went back east bundling up so much just to go to the market was a hassle. But I must admit having the snow at Thanksgiving & Xmas would be 👍🏼 great!
@BostonAreaHomes Жыл бұрын
@@chrisl6169 You really don't know what a donut is? You are lucky LOL Love snow when it's white and pure and covers everything and it seems the world stops for a few hours. The way snow sparkles under the street lights. The way the trees get dressed in all white. It is so, so pretty. Especially, when it's not too cold. Yes, I agree with you, Chris, that when it goes for too long, it gets old.

@Chris L, I heard again that they are trying to get rid of daylight saving time. I am praying that it will happen sometime in my lifetime! HAHA. It is tough to go from warm weather to cold but, you can other things that are absolutely awesome in Ma that you don't get in CA. It's such a personal decision and is completely based on your priorities.

Hi very useful advices. My daughter just moved to Boston. She is 18 years old and lives en Back Bay and study in Berklee. What store and brands can you recommend me for winter clothing? Thanks a lot in advanced!
@BostonAreaHomes Жыл бұрын
North Face is very popular here. LL Bean in NH, as one of the comments said, so you don't pay tax there. Just read the labels, if the jacket or boots say they are good in -10 F, then you should be covered for any type of cold.

Hi! Such an amazing and informative video! Im coming from a warmer climate with zero winter clothes, do you have an idea where in Boston should I start buying? and approximately how much would I need for all those clothes you mentioned
@BostonAreaHomes2 жыл бұрын
Hi Franklin Lee, thanks for watching. Depending on what quality and price point we are talking about, I would budget at least $1000 for the basics. You can always buy online
@BostonAreaHomes Жыл бұрын
Actually, taking it back. $1000 is too much. Couple of hundred for a warm jacket, up to $100 for boots. You can probably fit everything in $300

Winter sports are overrated. It's just too damned cold most of the time. I generally don't go out if it's below the mid 30s and even then only keep it in short bursts unless absolutely necessary

which brand is good for insulated jackets and snow boots
@BostonAreaHomes2 жыл бұрын
For jackets North Face is used a lot, Manisha, Sorel, Uggs, Timberland and North Face boots are also popular. Look for everything waterproof because snow turns to rain sometimes and slush protection is important too.
@lizgreer68882 жыл бұрын
MA native... LL Bean! There's an outlet store in NH where you can get winter stuff cheaper. Northface is great but expensive!
@McCready122 жыл бұрын
LL Bean. Their boots are indestructible and water proof. Their jackets are built for northeast winters. They might have an outlet in Wrentham too.
