You can't underestimate the importance of the "it just feels right" factor. You can look at all of the statistics and data points you could ever find, but if a place doesn't "feel right", then it's not the right place.

GREAT info. I will definitely stay in Mexico. I have traveled to 42 countries as a solo woman traveler and I choose Mexico to live. Mexico sure feels like home now. I also don't want the hassle of getting another permanent residency visa. By the way, I only spend $650 USD a month for EVERYTHiNG... including a fully furnished 3-bedroom apartment which comes in handy when friends and family want to visit.

I've trying to escape San Antonio this year, and Mexico City and Lisbon were also on my list. I've been to both as well, but there is something about Mexico City....it's a "je ne sais quoi"...that keeps me coming back there over and over again. I have been "country shopping" the past few months-Spain, The Netherlands, Brazil, and Japan....but I think I will settle on Mexico CIty. Lisbon to me was a nice place to visit, but it was missing a "spark" for me as well.

I loved your thorough review. You had me hanging on every word my friend. My 2 cents: 1) the hills kept me from exploring more - a deterrent 2) I found Porto to be more welcoming and the exploration for me was energetic. Áreas around Porto with the train system kept me moving about more. Great video Adalia!

Just fyi, it appears that they are changing the Golden Visa so please do your research if this is your desired route to residency. I was so excited to visit, and I enjoyed my visit, but I cannot say that it is on my list of my future potential retirement home countries. Hands down, Mexicans are absolutely more welcoming and friendly as opposed to the Portuguese. When I visited Merida, Mexico and Mexico City I was blown away at the friendliness of Mexicans.

HI Picky girl!, your channel was suggested in my feed a couple times and I know it's because I am also a black American that has been traveling internationally looking for my forever place, but I am choosing specifically Europe. I have already traveled 36 of the European Countries and have a little insight on those that I have visited. I was on lockdown in Lisbon in 2020-2021 and I was able to get to know the Portuguese culture and the real Portuguese vibe. My experience was similar to yours where I couldn't put my figure on what I did not like about Lisboa, but later I realized that the Portuguese were not welcoming to foreigners because of the mass migration of "Wealthy" westerners pushing prices up and pushing the native away from their beloved cities that they now can't afford anymore. Of course no one should fault us for wanting to live peaceful away from the USA, but I did understand their frustration when the average Portuguese Salary is 600-800 euro a month. I am currently in Poland where it's really affordable and the people are very welcoming, don't believe the hype that Polish people are not friendly because they are. If you like a clean and very architecturally Beautiful and safe city that functions very well, you will enjoy a visit to Warsaw, Poland or Gdansk, Poland which is where I am. Why is it so important that you see a lot of Black American is my questions? I have met some to the most amazing people all over Europe, mostly places that are not so popular with Americans, which I quite enjoy because if you like learning new cultures this is how I get to know the real natives. (Prague, Czech republic) (Budapest, Hungary) (Vienna Austria) (Zagreb, Croatia) (Strasburg France,) even Turkey has beautiful safe and cheap cities like (Antalya, Alana, Izmir, and Istanbul. I have lived in all of these places longer than 6 months and I felt safe and welcomed and I did manage to meet some American black women too as well as some other like minded women from all over the globe with the same goals for good quality of life. I enjoyed your content on this topic and forgive me for the long post LOL...Good luck with your search or your decision to stay in Mexico. :)

I've found that it's important in my search to find those places that embrace and welcome African American men, which is harder to find. Many places have welcomed my Girl's trip sista frens and our American dollars, only to reject any males traveling with us solo later. Racism has a gender element to it evidently... I didn't know it, but now that I'm aware, I'll only go where both genders are well received and respected. Amen

Girl, I've been following you since the beginning. You look fabulous and I love that backdrop. I loved living in CDMX. I loved the weather as I am not a tropical, humid, nor bug lovin gal so the coastal region was of no interest to me. However, I do love my ocean/sea views so off to Europe I went. I am definitely more attuned to the Mediterranean climate. I know of several who moved to Portugal as it is one of the quickest ways to obtain residency and get that passport that allows you to then move to any EU country. As for Lisbon for cheaper prices many move outside the city to neighboring communities. I have heard the same thing from friends living in Portugal that the language is hard and the Portuguese are friendly yet maintain a distance in regards to bringing others into their circle. On the flip side, I have friends there who love it. I think it is so important for people especially WOC to really do a personal inventory of what their needs are. Realize that this may change once you are in a new place. For many just getting out of the US and into a SAFE environment is #1. It may take time to desensitize yourself from years and generational trauma and underlying fears we had in the US. Feeling safe is not something many of us have truly experienced. Thinking of what we as women really would like is not always in our forethought. We are so used to carrying loads of responsibility for family and others first. Travel, move and remember that you can always change your mind.

I went to Lisbon and Sintra in 2015. Beautiful cities. However, I felt people were not warm and friendly like people were in Spain (which was part of that trip). I saw a lot of Black Portuguese and even stopped one to ask for help thinking they would be nicer to me, but I was wrong. Hearing you say there are a lot more Americans and Canadians in Lisbon would make it a NO for me on a place to relocate to. Unfortunately, when a city experiences a large flock of Americans and Canadiens, that city becomes more Americanized and that's a bad thing in my opinion.

@Picky Girl Travels the World Spain has always been high on my list, but after spending 16 days straight at the end of my 4 months of traveling, I am sort of questioning if I can afford to live in Western Europe. It has gotten so expensive since the pandemic. Prices in Spain have started looking like prices in the US with many things. I guess I will have to wait to see what happens in the next year as I mentally and financially prepare myself to leave the US.

I am in agreement with many of what you said about Portugal. I was there just a few weeks ago. I had a fantastic three weeks exploring the country. I travelled Lisbon, Obidos, Coimbra, Porto, Braga and The Algarve. I was there just for the adventure. Loved the city of Lisbon, for me I found it a very walkable city. I am a 71 year old who currently lives in a downtown walkable city. I had no problem climbing the hills. I enjoyed the challenge of climbing the hills. There is an area, Oriente, it is flat and has modern high rise buildings, a state-of-the-art shopping mall, and other entertainment facilities. I stayed in hotels and so I do not have any experience with rental accommodations. I also felt safe walking around after dark wherever I went. The food I enjoyed; several of the dishes I have tried were very simple, healthy and flavourful. I would take Portuguese cuisine over the French every time. For example, The Portuguese vegetable cream soups do not have cream added to it. I enjoyed meals with fresh fish and other seafoods with simply cooked vegetables. Their barbecue chicken is scrumptious. I think they eat more pastries than any other countries I have visited including the French. The dine in restaurants prices were not cheap. I did a bit of price comparison in one of their grocery stores, Pingo doce. The prices compared to our Canadian prices were a little lower, considering the currency exchange rate. Portuguese people are somewhat reserved but when they get to know you they are kind and caring people. As you can see from my name, I can only claimed to have a bit of their DNA and lots more melanin. Portugal is a place I would love to spend at least three months each year, mostly in the Algarve region between the months of February and May.

I’m on this same residency journey and left Portugal in April. I agree with all of your points about the city. However I did enjoy my time there a little more. Being similar to yourself a 'true introvert' I wouldn't require a lot of interaction from most folks, but I do agree that having a feeling of being welcomed or highly accepted would be a need for me. There is nothing worse than feeling like being a non -factor in humanity to make me shy away from a place. That though is still an issue in many places stateside! So, it is a conundrum.

As someone who is born in raised in Southern New England where we have one of the highest population of Portuguese people in the country, I've always found it surprising that black folks are flocking to Portugal as like a black mecca. Maybe the Portuguese people within their own country are different but the ones that immigrated here and their second generation children I've found a majority of them to be VERY prejudiced. So much so that I would never want to live in Portugal let alone visit the country.

Speaking as an immigrant to the USA: All immigrants to the USA are different from the home country. Home countries evolve, while immigrant culture remains rather static. Beyond that, Portugal was a major colonial force --especially in African countries and Colonies that used slave labor. It also had colonies in East and Southeast Asia. This means that all those people from the colonies came to roost in Portugal...because they could...

One could say the same about Italian American's in some areas like NYC, there is a anti-black sentiment. But historically in Italy it's not the same. So I think that racism can be learned when one moves to U.S., it's about pecking order. Of course Italy has some issues now mostly because of poor migrants influx from Africa overwhelming the system.

I'm so glad you were honest about your assessment of Lisbon. Interestingly enough, we experienced the same uninviting and unwelcoming response in Madeira Portugal recently. I kept waiting for the vibe to change the entire week we were there but it didn't happen. In fact, several times, we were treated very rudely and made to feel stupid when we didn't know something they knew. There were no spontaneous smiles and even my efforts to speak a few words of their language garnered no better treatment. This was so surprising to me. I feel like no matter where I go in the world, I want to be treated with respect and kindness because that's the energy I give to others. I know there are beautiful souls there, but they seemed few and far between. It makes sense to want to settle in a place that shows you love, especially when you come with a vibe of love and respect for them. Just sad that this wasn't our experience. I must say though that the beauty of the island itself exceeded my expectations. Great video and info by the way!

Thanks for the video! Love hearing the perspective. Not sure if someone else clarified, but the income for D8 (digital nomad) visa in Portugal is 4X the minimum wage, which is around 750 euros a month. So for D8 digital nomad working income visa, you need about 3000 euros per month. If you are using the retiree visa, you only need Portuguese minimum wage per month in passive income/investments. If you have active income, you need the D8 visa. I believe they added this because before they put digital nomad working remote people under the retiree visa, but the income was much lower so they probably wanted to raise the minimum income requirements for digital nomad types. Just my thoughts, idk for sure why.

I've been considering a move to Portugal for years; however, recently, I've heard that many of the Portuguese are not too excited about the influx of expats moving there which is driving up costs. I am also in several reddit forums where Brazilians and people who are fluent in Brazilian Portuguese have shared that the Portuguese are not very accepting of this dialect of Portuguese being spoken - they prefer either European Portuguese or English. of course, this is all anecdotal, but still something to think about. I am personally fluent in Spanish and an intermediate Brazilian Portuguese speaker; so I think I'd need to take a trip to see if Portugal would be a good fit for me. I am also considering Panamá and Cali, Colombia.

Thanks for doing this, Adalia. In the early 2000’s, my job transferred me to Lisbon for a couple years. I found Portugal to be an interesting place, with courteous people and outstanding food, but still Old World Europe. At that time, there were not a lot of tourists and the country was struggling to stay afloat financially. I’ve lived in many different countries and a few places are favorites for me, but Portugal is not top tier in my book. I also believe that holders of U.S. passports who are immigrating to Portugal should be ready for steep rent increases and a declining U.S. Dollar.

Thanks for this video Adalia. I enjoyed hearing your perspective on Portugal and Mexico. I visited Matzalan in 1990 and stayed at a nice time- sharing villa that my aunt had. I liked Mexico but I didn't get the feeling from the people that you described . My cousin who was with me brought her boyfriend who was from PR. We went to a market in Mexico and he spoke Spanish to three local men about a purchase and was laughed at because of his Spanish. My cousin is from Panama and she spoke Spanish to these men and didn't have a problem. I remember her boyfriend telling us he didn't want to speak Spanish as long as we were in Mexico. I think I would have to come back to Mexico and visit other parts. I 'm not saying that the people were not friendly. But I would have to go back again and stay longer than five days to get more of the feel and not stay in a tourist area. I still would like to visit Portugal.

I love these two places so far. I might have more than one, but on the same continent. We'll see. Thanks again for a great video

You're most welcome. Both Colombia and Ecuador are still on my list for now. I need to spend some time down there.

Great video! I was seriously planning to move to Portugal last yr. I took a scouting trip with an Exodus member and my daughter. We went in the summer and I can tell u it was very hot and my rental said they had AC but didn't 🤬 It ruined the 2nd half of the trip for me. I liked that many cultures and ethnicities were there but the people weren't really warm. But very polite. So I just felt kinda invisible. I even have Portuguese friends but found them kind of flaky when it was time to meet up. That just wouldn't happen if they came to America. I would make a way to spend time with them unless they were across the country or something drastic. I left feeling devastated because I really had it in my head that it was my place. I still don't have another place in mind. Maybe I could try other cities. I did like Gaia and Porto better than Lisbon. The food was like early 2000s American grocery store prices. I found the food and transportation much more affordable than in America. Maybe I'll look to Belize or the Caribbean this yr. I just feel deflated at this point.

I'm just finding your channel. Thank you for the information. Hopefully I will be in Portugal next year. For me its a country that doesn't see colors. You are either Portuguese or not. It doesn't really matter to me how diverse a place is, as long as their is no racism. Personally I'm staying away from Lisbon. Housing is expensive and feels too much like "American/touristy". I'm looking at coastal, smaller area's. Poor people of Portugal is getting priced out of housing. I imagine their homeless population will probably rise.

Love this conversation. The hills would be a turn off for me also. The older I get the less strenuous life I desire. Gene is hell bent on returning to the USA when he retires. I have about 6yrs to find a place we both can agree on. 😂😂

Drugs? Pressed and powdered laurel leaves (to fool foreigners)... Now, when tourists think they are buying something illegal, they don't check it when buying. Besides, they can't complain to the police for being fooled, right? And «sellers» are not bothered by the police because the police can not arrest people for selling laurel...

Why are there such few expats speaking of Spain? We are headed there and seeking Spain as a place to retire. From Seville to Valencia, it's tons of things to do and see. Spain has a very modern train and bus system, the food is delicious, the infrastructure is stunning, the parks and mountains are great, and the culture is beautiful in Southern Spain....By the way; they speak spanish in Spain. Adios

Hey, I think the challenge with Spain is/was taxes and their immigration process wasn't as straight forward as some other countries (digital nomad visa very recently launched) Nevertheless, I see more and more expats speaking very positively of the country and moving there. It can be a good thing that not too many expats speak about it, we see what popularity can do a city/country :) Pásalo bien :)
