So, the situation is as follows: very difficult to find a job if you don't speak the language. Even if you do won't be easy as there aren't many jobs. Good ones. Low wages. High taxes unless you are entitled to a reduction. No renting market and if you are lucky to find a place expect a price through the roof. Health care is universal if you are a resident or have an European card. Otherwise you'll need insurance. People are usually welcoming, although that is changing a bit because of the literal invasion by foreigners, food is good, weather is not bad and scenery is nice. Safety better than in most of other countries, if such a thing exists. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed. From someone born and raised in the country.

Thank you for this video. I love the neutrality and honesty about cost of living, for example. It's easy to only listen to the positives and forget that you're looking at a difference pace of life. I am learning to slow down. Living in the U.S., ordering through Amazon, for example has created a culture of "instant gratification." I am not on social media, aside from YT really, but will have to see if I can find other resources to inform my choice. But this video was very helpful. I can't wait to watch others of yours.

Thank you for this video Heather. Nice to shes some light on some of these myths you hear. That $1800 is what I’m paying here in Maryland for a 1 bedroom with the same amenities. That’s definitely not cheap. Depending on where you live in the state, you almost have to assume you might pay the same but Midas a car, car, insurance insurance and maybe other living expenses may be cheaper to make it still a better option. Because if you like traveling, it still will cost a lot less to travel from Portugal to other locations in Europe, as opposed to getting plane tickets from the US. To me, it’s still a good option with your points in mind.

I'm Portuguese living in Portugal after living in the US for 20 years. You are coming here for the opposite reasons we normally go to the US. When you don't have a choice, you make by on your new country as you can with the help of others and any other means you can find. You (US expats), because you're used to certain levels of quality of life and mostly with thousands in the bank, always have another option. Because of that, you go through these type of struggles getting used, I think. I'm Portuguese and find those same issues here. Welcome to Portugal and everyone that is bringing a new hope to those here!!

How do you feel about the medical coverage there, the struggles you face as a mom and the educational opportunities for my high schooler? Just subscribed

Working there isn't great. That's the only issue I have and there's also no rent control, it's getting overpopulated by senior Americans. I did visit for about a week, people are so nice. The hotels are so much nicer and affordable than in the US.

it seems audio plays only on the left side. beggars aren't local, they're (mostly) immigrants from eastern europe. some of us will talk louder at foreigners -.-' I'm so sorry for all of us who do that. nothing happens here, but yes, nothing happens here... amazon spain is amazing, next day delivery! very decent wines can be had at 2€ per bottle. just go to the nearest coffee shop and engage in football or politics chat with the locals. you'll learn more colourful portuguese than you ever wished for.

This is PORTUGAL not USA. If you want American/Mexican life stay there. Americans are privileged and love comparing others. This is Europe lifestyle. You’re living in the most expensive city move to a cheaper city if it’s too expensive. Living in Portugal you’re safer, healthcare is cheaper, food healthier and hopefully we’ll live longer because we’re eating natural foods without additives, dyes etc. I love my Portuguese life and regret not moving sooner. Yes, the language is a challenge but there’s choice if you don’t want to speak Portuguese you can move to cities with more English speaking expats and pay for an interpreter when you need to communicate in Portuguese. Sorry to hear your disappointments but in comparison USA has a lot more things to complain about. The Portuguese people treats you with respect, you don’t need to keep looking over your shoulders in case someone jack you up, police not harassing you. I am able to breathe and I’m not stressed out. Enjoy your best life because tomorrow isn’t promised. Be thankful for each day you live another day without the fear of being shot or attacked. It will get better it’s a life adjustment. Things could be a lot worst, focus on the positives.❤❤

hi! i am a retired little old white lady with two cats. i am terrified. terrified to stay in a country that refuses to stand up to a national bully here in america & get the rightful winner of the election into the wh. i am a teeny bit hopeful she will get a recount done & everything will work out. but i need to be ready to get out of here, & that is my second source of terror, making a huge move to another country, & rumor has it that portugal is one of the better places for relocation. i am in nys so i am within reasonable distance from it. i hear you about the economy, but if trump gets in power, i will be losing my home anyways without the profit i can get now. . i am retired military also. i refuse to live in a dictatorship my co-soldiers throughout history have died to keep us safe from. our leaders are telling us, they died in vain. i have done traveling, but not on this scale. the furthest i've moved is 100 miles. i am experiencing culture shock, from a busy city, albany, ny to a small 8700 pop town in central, ny. it was a rough two years settling in. so i have a inkling of what to expect. thank you for your video. & these fb groups. i need help with so much of the process. i'm watching all different videos & everyone is offering another valuable piece of the puzzle in bite sized pieces. hopefully everything will work out here, & if it does, i am not wasting my time on this, it is a great distraction, & info for a future move. thank you, thank you!

Sorry to be so blunt but you have obviously done great research and want to share it widely and the articulation just gets in the way.
