Rather than just review the Movo VXR10 pro, I thought that it might be more useful to compare the earlier version with the new one.
My first thoughts are that the new one goes lower in the bass while the older one has more of a mid bass boost. So the old one 'sounds' bassy but doesn't go quite as low as the new one. Some people might prefer the mid bass hump without the deeper bass though to quieten down traffic noises and rumble.
The Movo VXR10 pro sounds like it has a stronger high frequency output as well. That helps with the clarity of speech.
So with not so much of a mid bass hump and more treble, the pro version is probably better at capturing clear speech in most situations. So in my mind, it's a better mic for the extra £10.

The one issue I have with the VXR10 Pro is that the fur windshield only fits over the foam one, so in effect we still have an almost solid mass for the wind to bounce off, and you can hear it. On the original version it was a traditional dead-cat which gave a sterile area between it and the mic proper. What is needed is a dead-cat that fits and works properly without the foam inside it, as on the original model that gave very little trouble with wind noise.

I purchased the Boya BY-MM1 a few months back and was quite disappointed by its performances. How do you connect it Ian? Directly to the camera or are you using a Tascam or similar?

Hi David. I connected directly into my camera. I thought that is how most people would use it so no preamps were hurt during the making of this video! The Movo is really quite nice. The only thing is that I don’t think it’s far removed from the Boya BY MM1+. That Boya though is an improvement on the original BY-MM1.

@Sasuntidictous Rhoireiphapos I have quite a few caneras, but the one I used here was just a camcorder ..... a Sony cx625 which isn’t my best, but the one thing about camcorders is that they are better than many people think and the Sony’s have pretty good preamps. I’ll be talking about camcorders in my next live stream. The ‘crap’ sound is basically on a DSLR, they really do skimp on the preamp.

Hi Ivan. I ‘think’ that the Movo is slightly better as far as resistance to wind goes. I found the supplied deadcat withe the Boya to be slightly worse on the front so if you video facing the wind, it is susceptible to wind sounds. The Movo VXR10 Pro is slightly better than the original though both in terms of sound and wind resistance. It seemed pretty good to me, so if you were considering the Boya, I would go for the VXR10 Pro I think. Lower noise floor than the original, a bit more sparkle and better resistance to wind. The original VXR10 is more weighted towards upper bass and can be a little thick sounding. I know that some people like this, but for speech clarity (which is what we need them for), the newer version gives just a little more. The VXR10 Pro is very similar in sound to the Boya. Just better at resisting the wind.

I prefer the new version of the Movo. However, I wouldn't use it to record speaker sound if you are using the recordings to demo speakers. You would need something much better than this. I don't know much about the best mic for an iPhone. I don't have one.

Somehow the 10pro version which I received requires a lot more preamp gain than the original 10 which I've owned and used previously. The 10pro does sound more open but the noise floor is much higher. Is this accurate or did I receive a bad copy? Thanks

You may have a bad one I think. The noise floor on mine is lower and gain is toughly the same.

What are you recording? The game or your voice? For the game sound, I would use a lead direct, but for your voice, the new version. (Pro)

Picking up your voice from a distance isn’t great for audio. Another great option is the Takstar sgc600 which might be a little better further away.

No. Amazon UK stock them. I think the US store does as well. Itis dodgy now with this EU thing because Thommann mics from Germany now have import tax put on them and a handling fee, I know! No, this one is direct from Amazon. Good mic as well.

Is there a hack to prevent a super cardioid mic from picking up sounds in the rear lobe ?

No there isn’t. Just get a cardioid, that rejects the rear. One thing you can do to help is hold the camera and mic in front of your body. Your body then shields the mic from rear sounds.

Does anything change between the Movo VXR10 Pro and the Boya by-mm1 Plus? They look identical on the photos but I don't know if they have the different capsule

I’m not sure Claudio. The Boya isn’t as good in wind as the Movo. Sound is very similar.

Yes. That’s how they all work. Cameras don’t send audio out at the same time from the mic socket, but phones do.

I have no idea why that should be. If it works with other cameras then the GoPro adapter should also supply voltage for it. I wonder whether there is a problem with the plug?

Yes. That’s what I really liked about it. In comparison to the Boya with its original windshield, it’s far better. This one has become my new runaround mic with small cameras. I couldn’t easily test outdoors because the weather here has been awful, but it does even better with sound outdoors.

Ah too bad. But I believe you it sounds good. That's what I love about Omni mics. They handle wind like your eardrums. My AT-8022 with it's new wind fome is also just about as good as this mic.

@@iancraig Ah you didn't mention SPL for either of them. But yes I like the sound of the new 1 more. I'm listening over my Bose Companion 5 multimedia speakers. If you haven't heard of them basicly it's like the old 321 vurtual surround sound system with 2 speakers and a sub they use to have but this system is USB and it's for your PC.

Good question. My preference for windy days is the VXR10 but for sound, the Takstar. It performs way above its price. I just wish that Takstar would produce a decent deadcat for it.

I picked up two of these and both didn't sound anywhere near as good as the one you used in this video. both of the ones I tested sounded like talking into a tin can and didn't pick up any of the lower range depth of vocals.
