In 2017 I chased 844 across central NE, in 2019 it was 4014. Every time the excursion train was stopped so was other traffic. I did witness the 844 take the opposite line so a freight going the same direction could go around it. When I followed 4014 on Sunday all other traffic was stopped, but on Monday they were moving freight again, but not passing a stopped excursion. Model Railroad Control Systems has a switch machine called the MP5 that I think would be great for surface mounting.

When the Big Boy came to Chicago, at least 1 eastbound freight passed it when it made a stop in West Chicago (the excursion was headed west). Leaving Chicago [westbound on UP West] it was passed by several EB freights (notably in Geneva...to the consternation of anyone on the north station platform). If memory serves correctly most of those freights were moving much slower than normal track speed.

Hi Daryl I have mounted Tortoise switch machines upside down on top of the bench work and make a connection rod out of music wire to connect the throw bar to the pivot wire on the machine. You would need to add a small extension of plywood to mount the Tortoise next to your turnout. If you can find a video of Tony Koesters layout, one of his staging yards has all of the Tortoises mounted that way Good luck. Enjoy your videos.

Sounds great! Gonna try something like that with their smaller smail motors

I've noticed UP likes using GP60s for yard power and locals as much as their 40-2s and tend to cycle the 2 types. Recently I was in Des Moines and saw there was still an ex-MOP GP15 in yard service there.
@WyanoPenna8 ай бұрын
There aren't really any GP60s in Utah or Wyoming, we mostly get 40Ns, GP15s, and SD70Ms. There were GP60s on the Centennial Park Local in SLC, but they have since been replaced by SD70Ms

There are several twin coil switch motors that fit alongside the turnout that would easily fit your space. Or a small slow motion machine like an MP5 that you could mount on the masonite side and use cranks to connect to the turnout.

Normally the excursion takes priority over other UP trains. Its very rare that i have seen them have to wait for a freight to pass. Usually its the other way around. But it has happened. I am still trying to find. Challanger to go with my super detailed 844. I have a athearn big boy. But its on the back burner cause i have to rip out the MRC decoder and upgrade it. Got lots of fun stuff planned for that one. But the main goal right now is finding a challanger.

Back in the 50s the B&O put two F7-units on opposite ends of their work trains. Of course, they needed two engineers, and two firemen. Never understood that concept except it was held over from the steam days. And there was also a waycar of come type to house a conductor and brakeman consisted in the same train. Consider this on your work train so we never know which end is in control when parked. Just a thought. I also wanted to ask about the track voltage. My track voltage across the rails reads 12.7 volts. The voltage input to my DCS 100 is over 15 volts with a 3.5 amp transformer. This used to work on another layout, but since I moved and built this one none of my DCC engines work. Analog works fine. Another fine vid.
@EvanstonSub8 ай бұрын
Measuring the volts at the rails will not give accurate results. Instead measure DC voltage between ground and rail A and then between ground and rail B. Add the results for the total AC volts between the rails.
@daleroth2368 ай бұрын
@@EvanstonSubMy input transformer is 18 volts and 3.5 Amps. Rail B is 5.7 volts and Rail A is 6.92 volts. That's pretty close to track voltage of12.7 volts. Put brand new Digitrax decoder in an SD40-2 and made the settings, and it creeps along with slow acceleration. Has no pulling power. Maybe my DCS 100 is done. I know last year every engine having decoders installed somehow copied each other's addresses and it screwed up the settings in each engine. There were ten on different tracks. Sounds like something shorted out. Thanks for your answer.
@EvanstonSub8 ай бұрын
The difference between rail A and rail B voltage should not be higher than .5 volts. Yours is 1.22 volts. I would send it to Digitrax for repair. Only cost $25.

In relation to above board switching Hornby does some above board mounts under a small building to cover the twin coil switching motor. A twin coil switching motor like Peco switches or the Hornby ones could be exchanged for a slow motion switch by adding an extra hole for the pin to lock into. I have used the mounts under the base boards and above and they can sit to the side of the turnouts and I have looked at using a DCC Concepts slow motion switch above the base board in staging to actuate. The mounts do have a spring for locking to the sides but this can be removed. This may give you an option for the switching you are seeking for your work and excursion trains. cheers Davido

Hey Daryl, heads up on 28:39, SD60Ms and SD70Ms are not equipped for DPU operation by the UP, however, they can be used as DPUS when MUed to a DPU equipped locomotive, like a GEVO or AC4400. Rapido is coming out with their NSC ballast hoppers in UP soon, so bee on the lookout for those if you're interested, I think i told you about those at AMherst Cheers, Preston
